TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The image of the elf vanished, as the real Ivendor's voice came from the tree.
"I wouldn't try that if I were you."
Before she could respond, Aurora heard a soft thud as a Ventan collapsed on Lex
Luthor's machine.
"Oh, no," said Ivendor, and then suddenly there was another thud, and the elf-
mage came tumbling out of the tree. He wasn't totally knocked out or disabled,
however. He started to get up immediately. Aurora was surprised he didn't yell, but
maybe he'd had the wind knocked out of him. She looked up, glimpsed Kali's grin
through the branches, and then reversed her sword and raised it to hit the elf with
the hilt.
Suddenly, as Ivendor struggled to rise, another person tripped over him, tumbling
both of them to the ground. It looked like Vannes, one of the Lord Protectors who was
under the spell of Luthor's machine. Quickly, Aurora hit both of them on the head.
Kali climbed down from the tree. "Let's give them the acid treatment," she
whispered, unslinging her backpack full of mutant ferns.
"No, let's just take out the machine and then we won't need to."
"But--"
There was a crash and clatter from near the Gate, as Blades apparently performed
that very job. All of the injured Ventan immediately dropped to the ground, moaning.
Unfinished came running out of the trees with his pack of makeshift medical supplies
and skidded to his knees next to them.
Medorus, who had been sitting on a log and copying inscriptions from the Gate,
leaped to his feet and bellowed, "WHAT THE BLOODY HELL IS GOING ON? I NEED SOME PEACE
AND QUIET TO WORK! AND SOMEONE BRING ME A BETTER LIGHT!"
Lex Luthor jumped up, too, and plunged into the shifting green glow of the Chaos
Gate.
"Someone stop that fellow!" Medorus said. "Aurora, it's derring-do. Handle it,
would you? There's a nice girl." Then he sat down again, picked up his drawing pad,
and continued working.
Unfinished had got a jug of water from somewhere and he was rinsing the near-
unconscious Ventan with it, washing the acid from their bodies and then putting some
kind of salve on them. Aurora desperately wanted some of that treatment. On the
other hand, it was Lex's fault she was in this condition and she had a mind to speak
to him about it. Also, there was the relief she felt, to find her archaeologist
friend unharmed, both physically and mentally.
All right then.
Drawing a deep breath, she took three running steps and leaped through the Chaos
Gate.
Or rather, INTO the Chaos Gate. It seemed to be a tunnel about eight feet in
diameter. It was quite dark, except for patches of glowing green fungus on the walls.
There was a sour-smelling breeze blowing into her face.
Hearing sounds, she moved forward. The curving floor squished under her feet.
She came to a Y intersection. From the left branch came the same sour breeze.
From the right, she detected the less unpleasant stench of sulphur. She chose the
right fork, reasoning that Lex would have done so, too.
There was hardly any fungus in this tunnel, and the floor was dry. She reasoned
that the sour stink must have come from that stuff. On the other hand, so had the
light. Here, it was fully dark and she groped her way along the passage, turning as
the shape of the floor told her that the tunnel curved.
Maybe Lex hadn't come this way, if there was no light. On the other hand, maybe
he had something he could use to make light. He seemed fairly ingenious.
After a few minutes, she did see a light up ahead. It was very faint, and seemed
to come from around a curve in the passage, but it was golden-white and so she didn't
think it came from the fungus. She hurried a bit, following the light around several
curves, but from its increasing brightness she thought she must be catching up with
him. Then she came around another curve and suddenly saw him.
He was standing in the entrance to a larger area--higher, wider, and deeper--and
he was holding in his raised left hand some kind of glowing thing. In his right hand
he held a crossbow. But he faced away from her, and Aurora's eyes were drawn to the
same thing he seemed to be looking at.
It was silvery-white, so emaciated that every bone showed clearly through its
scaled hide. Its long, snaky neck curved up towards the top of the cavern, and looked
down at Lex. Its gigantic crocodile jaws opened.
Aurora backed away. She stopped where she was just able to see past a curve in
the wall, and remained poised to run if it seemed necessary. She owed Lex nothing at
all, and wasn't nearly angry enough to risk a dragon's fire to get to him.

Tsaumarn, the fortress:
Ultraist and Saureza ran down a hallway, empty as every corridor and room had
been so far. The manager was profoundly uneasy. This vacancy in an occupied and
defended fortress was unnatural, and the unnatural, more often than not, was a trap.
They came to a cross-corridor and paused. Saureza, he saw, was not so calm as she
appeared; her face was drawn tight and there was sweat on her forehead.
But she was steady and not ready to run. "The entrance to the dungeons is that
way," she said quietly, pointing left. "No matter how many men Barkab has drawn off
to the yard, there will be guards there. Our only hope will be to kill them as soon
as we see them."
"Suits me," the manager said. Then he cocked his head to one side, his more
acute hearing having picked up sounds Saureza missed. "Someone's coming up from there
now."
She drew her sword and half-crouched in the shadow of a buttress. "Then the
killing begins now."
The heavy, iron-bound door at the end of the cross-corridor swung outward. Armed
men came through it, then three prisoners in chains--Ultraist recognized his ally Doc
LeMa$e, and Gryzash of Sibikhas, whom he had seen twice in that city, but the third
man, a Rirorni, was unknown to him. Behind them came more armed guards and a man in
the robe of a magician of some sort. All were alert for trouble from the prisoners
but did not look elsewhere. They were moving along that hall quickly, headed for
another door like the one they'd left, which Saureza whispered led to the highest
tower of the fortress.
"We attack when the magician is directly in front of us," Ultraist said. He laid
down his blade, removed the more confining parts of his clothing, and began the shape-
change.
Saureza jumped a little. Whatever she had expected from the tall Alastarian, it
had not been this. But she swallowed once and picked up his sword in her off hand;
she was big enough herself to wield it.
In mid-change, Ultraist discovered that the very stones of the fortress were
soaked in magic, and that this latent enchantment interfered with his action. The
shift in form had never been so agonizingly slow before. The party from the dungeons
was close, they would have to attack soon or give it up-- He set his teeth, though
whether they were human teeth or a lion's fangs at that moment he couldn't have said,
and bent his formidable will to the task.
SPY REPORT
Good day, in MORDANT a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor.
So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. It seems the training can make the
difference, as HAWKS is pushed out of top team by CARE LESS BEARS, who came from 6th
with a 4-1-0 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are
sorrows to drown for D'OUTRE TOMBE, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 5 into 8th.
HOMICIDAL MANIACS stable has parlayed this turn's 4-1-0 into a 6 space move up the
rankings. This brings them up to 2nd place. Good work, guys! The CARE LESS BEARS
guild has had a 4-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know
where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, THE LESSER fought THE NOTHING and
gained 17 points and contributed to CHAOS CULT's 1-2-0. THE NOTHING has lost to THE
LESSER, falling 13 points, while helping make FANTASIA a 0-2-0 turn. Somebody's not
going to like this, (then again, somebody will), but our Duelmaster, ATREYU, has
died, and SALESGUN has killed him. By the way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw
last night, cramped under the table at Conan's Place?
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. HOMICIDAL MANIACS has cause to
stand tall, as they were MORDANT's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is
a team to beat. And guess who avoided HOMICIDAL MANIACS stable the most? Believe it
or not, it was CHAOS CULT. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that
HOBAG from LEGENDS OF STEELE was MORDANT's most challenged warrior this turn. Tsk,
tsk, tsk. BLACK BREEZE, does your manager know you're challenging down 33 points to
fight KIRA MADEA from HOMICIDAL MANIACS? I thought challenges were for warriors, not
cowards looking for easy wins. BLACK BREEZE defeated KIRA MADEA, is nothing sacred?
I don't know about you, but PORN-QUEEN BEAR challenging down 20 points to HOMICIDAL
MANIACS' KINDERGARDENER, is not really worthy of CARE LESS BEARS. Well, surprise,
surprise, PORN-QUEEN BEAR was subdued by KINDERGARDENER, and by the way, PORN-QUEEN
BEAR now has a recognition score of 7. In a brave attempt, NARCYL IRONSBANE from
VIDEO RANGERS challenged up 22 points to fight OBESITY BEAR from the CARE LESS BEARS
stable. NARCYL IRONSBANE perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was defeated by
OBESITY BEAR and ended up with 78 recognition points.
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. We'd like to remind certain teams
not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered
rude.
Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the
sweetest. Well, I'm burning daylight here in MORDANT and I've a long road ahead of
me. Happy Trails. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to paper-- Alarond the

Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.
Cult of the Dragon (339), DM-43
All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
Dragonslayers (636) in Solven (DM 22)
16 October 1999
To anyone starting a new team -- No good sales pitch or gimmicks (yet). If you're
adding a team, please put it in Jurine, DM-61. We only have one unchartered team and
eight teams total. So why come to Jurine? Simply put; WE ARE BEGGING YOU!!! --
Wardancer, mgr. War Party
23 October 1999
All -- Noblish Island (93) has a number of new teams who are looking to graduate to
other arenas in the next few turns. Now is the time to sing your arena's praises,
number of teams, quality of competition, and whether Debbie T. frequently visits
(wink) are the questions most asked by our managers. We hope to hear from you. -- The
Shadowlord, Sacco's Shadows (93)
Hi everyone, this is Shadow. I hope this finds you all well. I have missed most of
you. <smile> I don't know if or when, if ever, I will come back to the game but RSI
has notified me (by negative account balance) that all the teams and warriors I sold
were not paid for or payments were not correctly made to my account. I would like to
settle these matter please. For those that did pay I would like to buy back any and
all the teams and warriors I sold and compensate accordingly. Thanks so much, my
