+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Charter Cities #29 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
In the general vicinity of Monuntial:
The ships drew nearer with dreamlike slowness. Standley thought that odd,
considering the strength of the wind, at least, its strength there on the lighthouse
tower. Of course, with all the islands and shoals that turned the western approach to
Monuntial into an obstacle course, maybe it wasn't so unusual as all that.... Slowly,
but without running aground or getting into any of a dozen other mishaps that were
common in those waters. They must have at least one skilled pilot who knew this
approach. Well, it wasn't his business to figure out that; his business was to keep
an eye on the ships and report what he saw.
Starting at one edge of the loosely grouped fleet, he began to examine them ship
by ship, making mental notes of what he saw. There was a group of ships on his right,
meaning closest to shore as they approached, which had white sails and red-and-black
flags. The next group had red sails and blue-and-white banners. Then a motley group
with sails of most any color and no flags that he could see, and another group of red
sails and blue-and-white banners. Did that mean ships from different ports, or
belonging to different fleets? Counting them was impossible; he could only guess at
the numbers: sixty, he thought. That was more than he, for one, had expected.
Watching the slow approach of the invaders, he began to calculate how many
fighting men might be landed from each, and where they would come to shore. Somewhere
here on the point, he decided finally. If they'd meant to come straight into
Monuntial harbor, the would have taken the northern approach to the mouth of the
Duskblood instead of this eastern one. And as for how many men--too many. It seemed
unlikely that there would be as few as ten warriors per ship, but even that would mean
six hundred men!
He wished Socar would get back. With reinforcements.
East of the Charter Cities:
The two Moryan armies had met and merged and now were camped for a breather while
their leaders studied maps. Staring at the leaders, with their silks and their
chariots and their big tents that probably had who-knew-what luxuries inside, some of
the rank and file muttered angrily, but nobody went beyond a quiet complaint among
friends.
"After all," as a sergeant by the name of Hurdogar pointed out," the big shots
have to do all the planning, make the decisions, and so on, and most of them worked
their way up to the office of general and all its perks, anyway." If the last was not
true in most cases, well, nobody was going to make an issue of that.
"And we'll get our chance," an unmounted spear carrier stated with satisfaction.
"Why, I heard that when we take this Carloi place, we'll all be made into dukes at the
least, with silk beds and four beautiful girls apiece!"
"Hold your chatter, Parlo!" Sergeant Hurdogar roared. "That's all nonsense!"
Turning on the other men around, he repeated, "Nonsense, I tell you!"
"Yeah," another spear carrier put in, "we couldn't all be dukes. Some of us'll
be counts or barons or other stuff."
Leaving the sergeant trying to restore some kind of perspective and reasonable
expectation to his men, the gladiators went into a huddle off to one side. Stumpy Joe
and Meat of Khalani, and Redfox of Dullens, who had marched out with one of the Moryan
armies, were joined by Claudius and Don Johnson of Morya and Lead Lambaster of Lapur,
who had ridden with the other.
"Anybody got an idea what's coming off here?" Meat asked. "Where we're going,
and why the two armies, and all?"
"What I heard--I don't swear it's true, mind you," Claudius said, "is that we're
supposed to go to someplace called Carloi and help defend it against Inzolas."
"I never heard of this Carloi place," Stumpy Joe put in. "That means it's not in
Alastari, right? At least, not close to Khalani and all."
"It's way to the east," Redfox said. "I've never been there, but I've heard of
it. On the coast--one of the Ferencian city-states."
"Well, it strikes me as kind of stupid, sending all the Moryan army--"
"More like half," Claudius interrupted, "even counting both groups together."
"Still, it's fair to middling stupid to send us off into the east when there's an
invasion coming close at hand," Lead Lambaster argued. "It strikes me that there's
something fishy about this."
"Sure is," John Donson said dryly. He lifted one of the journey-cakes the troops
had been issued, which was made of dried fish, among other things. The stuff didn't
taste bad, but it got boring really fast.
"Very funny," Lambaster said in a flat voice. He started to say more, then saw,
as Donson had, that one of the officers was passing their group; if the man was keen
of hearing, he might have heard the comment. The Lapurian gladiator studied the
passing man carefully; the man was a Moryan Knight with a captain's plume on his
helmet and the device of scarlet hawk clutching an arrow embroidered on his surcoat.
Following the Lambaster's gaze, Claudius said, "Sir Tivarius Kiyle, the
Equestor's nephew."
"Ambitious," Donson added, "and with a twisty mind that slides away from points
of honor. I wouldn't trust him farther than I could throw him by his plume."
Switching his gaze to the group of leaders around the silken tent, he added, "And if I
was General Norvendian, I wouldn't even trust him that far."
Dullens:
Councilor Fekhdelgei had found it easy to get Lord Protector Madbull alone,
impossible to talk any kind of sense to him. The man was worse than useless as a
conspirator, because he was, quite frankly, not sane. He might be induced to
assassinate Jehrin Kiyle, but not to keep quiet about it afterwards. Reluctantly, the
Councilor dismissed the idea of using Madbull for that task and turned his mind to
searching for other possibilities.
Khalani:
The Vehal Yssirian Allaya, ruler of Khalani, collected the attention of the
managers with a glance and then began to talk. "You have all heard the rumors of an
invasion," she said. "If you have any doubts, I will tell you here and now, the
invasion is a real threat. True, Khalani is not on the coast--by forty miles. Anyone
who thinks the invaders, if they make a successful landing, will hesitate to come this
far--" She shrugged. "Well, any such person is blind or an idiot."
"The Kiyles of Dullens and Morya appear to believe that they won't be menaced,"
Uncle Wolf said. He was a newcomer to Khalani but had been managing teams in Dullens
for some time.
"We won't argue about the danger," Senchin of Urban Mystics said. "What do you
want us to do to help?"
"It will take another two weeks to complete the mobilization of the army of
Khalani," the Vehal said. "This may be too long. I want scouts and guerilla parties
to locate and delay invaders who get past the coast. If some of you will join the
coastal defenses--at Monuntial, Zarens, and Chimlevtal--that, too, will help."
"Chimlevtal's not a Charter City," Uncle Sam of All American pointed out.
"Neither is Zarens, although they've petitioned for admission," the Vehal
answered crisply. "But I am convinced that if we don't stand together, we will fall
one by one."

SPY REPORT
Hail and well met warriors of DULLENS! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team KIWI CONNECTION was
unseated this week as THE UNDESIRABLES moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot
with a 3-0-0 record for the round. Fortune did not smile upon MUPPET IRREGULARS this
time out who this turn suffered a fall into 7th position in the wake of a 0-5-0
round. Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how
this week DEVONSHIRE HOUSE went 1-0-0 to move up 3 in the rankings. My praise to THE
UNDESIRABLES for their 3-0-0 week this time out. Indeed, it was a skillfully fought
round deserving of notice! I could not but notice the fine record for FLTOPS II
(4-1-0) after their first round of combat. May the gods of war favor you in DULLENS!
In one of the week's more notable duels, WHITEWING put down N. CHRISTIE, causing him
to lose 21 points of recognition in the process. Unwilling to wait upon the will of
others, Duelmaster WARTS challenged AVONSIDE last week in a match to decide the fate
of the throne. Although AVONSIDE made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple
the reign of victorious WARTS. Would you believe that over half of the old women in
DULLENS seem to feel that they could fight better than you gladiators?
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city DULLENS. My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in DULLENS
these days is KIWI CONNECTION. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid
them. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the
better part of last week avoiding KIWI CONNECTION. Indeed it was THE UNDESIRABLES.
Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that
many fighters are after AVONSIDE. Watch your back! A match that raised a few
eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that BIRD FLIPPER posted a challenge
against the more highly recognized HASEK. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand
BIRD FLIPPER subdued HASEK. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel. I
can not but mention with disdain the name of RALPH THE DANG who this week posted a
challenge to a warrior a full 11 points below in the rankings. I thought RALPH THE
DANG showed great skill and promise when he was bested by CRASHTESTDUMMY. All right,
so I slept through it! Big deal!
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune
but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a
stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise
are angered by the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.
Cult of the Dragon (339), DM-43
All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
Dragonslayers (636) in Solven (DM 22)
16 October 1999
To anyone starting a new team -- No good sales pitch or gimmicks (yet). If you're
adding a team, please put it in Jurine, DM-61. We only have one unchartered team and
eight teams total. So why come to Jurine? Simply put; WE ARE BEGGING YOU!!! --
