The Meeting
As Umbra followed Shadowgate and Lord Andarus into the restaurant, he wondered
why Yukon, and for that matter, Maddog, wanted to assemble this particular group of
managers. They all had teams and Jhelum and all, but Andarus also vies for supremacy
in Aljafir, actually we were more enemies than anything else. Well, it won't hurt to
see what Yukon has in mind. "He usually throws a good party if the past get-togethers
are any indication," mused Umbra.
"How do you do it?" asked Shadowgate, falling back to ask Umbra his question.
Andarus predictably moved to the front of the party, he being nobility and all.
"Do what?" Umbra replied.
"That glide thing," said Shadowgate, "you know, walking but it looks like your
gliding across the floor. You're doing it right now."
"Well it takes practice and a large cloak to appear to be floating, or gliding
across the floor," said Umbra. "In fact, it's particularly easy because the floor is
a little greasy, almost like skating."
Just then the hostess turned into an alcove. Umbra concentrating on the 'glide'
just kept going. While Shadowgate watched amused he bounced off the wall, the door,
two waitresses, three nuns and a large group of orphans before coming to a rest on his
backside.
"Well, I think I'll pass on learning to glide," quipped Shadowgate. "At least
the rest of the patrons liked your performance."
Umbra looked around the restaurant and noticed several other managers laughing at
his misfortune. Getting up and dusting himself off, Umbra joined Shadowgate in the
alcove amidst the growing laughter.
"Umbra, Shadowgate, Grab a drink lads," roared Yukon.
Yukon was a large man, nearly 6'4" and stocky. He had quite an unforgettable
appearance. Well, it could be the outfit he wore. Lederhosen and hobnailed mountain
boots, not your usual suave gladiatorial manager look, but it suited Yukon.
"You guys better get started, he has a lead on you," said Maddog, sipping his
non-alcoholic beverage. "Everything is a contest with him, I figure he has a two
drink lead on you."
Maddog was also a large man, but where Yukon was tall, Maddog was short and
stocky. He also had the largest head Umbra had ever seen; made to look worse because
he wore a full helm with a studded dog collar. Maddog had told him that he wore the
helmet to protect his identity, he had gone by several aliases and wanted to hide his
identity. While the helmet protected his visage it severely affected his hearing,
conversations with Maddog often followed this pattern: Hi, What, I said Hi, What, Bite
me, WHAT.
"I know better than to play the drinking game with Yukon. Last time I tried that
I woke up in broken-down brothel," said Umbra. "I also ended up giving him several
gladiators, including two recent Aljifirian Duelmasters. That's how drunk I was."
"What," asked Maddog.
"Ha!" roared Yukon. "You didn't give them to me, I swindled them fair and
square. You're just mad that the selling price was so low, the cost of a couple of
pitchers as I recall."
I really think I despise this man, thought Umbra.
"Could you please enlighten us as to the reason you asked us here," asked
Andarus, sipping his brew. "The tourney starts tomorrow, I'm sure we all have better
things that we should be doing."
"What," asked Maddog.
"The reason I asked you all here is the proposal of an alliance. Maddog and I
have been talking and we think that we should work together," belched Yukon, blowing
the foam off yet another drink. "Tell them about the specifics, Maddog."
"What," asked Maddog.
"The specifics about the alliance!" roared Yukon. He yelled so loud that
Shadowgate nearly jumped out of his skin, dropping his drink.
"Oh that," said Maddog. "It's like this. We work together at this tournament,
and any future tourneys. We share information, hopefully enabling our warriors to do
better. We still kick the crap out of each other back in Jhelum but we call a truce
here."
"Interesting," said Umbra "I like the idea, I even have an idea for a name, 'The
Shadow Alliance'"
"I like it," seconded Shadowgate.
"I figured you would," replied Umbra.
"What," said Maddog. "I wanted to call it the 'Dog Pound'."
"How about 'Lords and Lackeys'?" smiled Andarus pointedly at Umbra and
Shadowgate.
"It has to be 'Silver and Gold'," said Yukon. "It was my idea originally, so I
should get to pick."
"We need to find a neutral name," pointed out Andarus. "Otherwise we'll be here
arguing all night."
Just then Diana walked in....

"Dana, have you got a moment?"
Dana Alroth looked up from the mound of papers she was poring over. She grinned
at Thorin Lacksin, the biggest of her teammates and taller than herself by almost two
full heads. "Sure, all this paperwork is making me depressed anyway."
Thorin sat down with a grace that was surprising for someone of her size. Thorin
and Dana were the last members of the team from before they moved to Aljafir from
Noblish Island. The two of them had become quite close since then and from Thorin's
expression, Dana knew her friend had something on her mind.
"So what's up, the new kid?" she asked.
"Hmm, oh no, not that." Thorin pulled a letter out of her tunic and handed it to
Dana. "I hate to do this to you, Dana, but I got this today."
Dana didn't even need to open it to know what it was. She could tell by the
seal. Thorin had been invited to the Isle.
"Well, this doesn't make my job any easier," Dana said gravely. Just a few weeks
ago, Darion, the team leader had left for the Isle himself. The week he left, one of
the newer recruits, Norick Yllwin, was killed. Then this past week one of the
replacements, Sarin Pastek was killed. And now Thorin was leaving. "I wish I could
say I was happy for you, but...."
"I know." Thorin began fidgeting wither her hair. "I could always turn down the
invitation."
"Don't you dare." Anger had replaced the sadness in Dana and she all but yelled
at her best friend. "This is one of the highest compliments you will ever get. And
besides..." Dana suddenly grinned, "I need someone to look after Darion. You know
that dwarf is probably getting into drunken bar fights left and right out there."
Thorin grinned right back. "You're right. Besides, Simone also graduated and we
need to pave the way for some other slashers to reach the top."
"So when do you leave?"
"Next week."
Dana stood and pulled her friend with her out the door. "Then we'd better get
started on your going away party, don't you agree?"
* If you've ever wondered about Thorin, her stats were 12-16-15-12-13-11-12.

The Storm Sea air had cooled. The sky had clouded over, obscuring the stars. On
clear nights, the Holy Avenger's navigator used the stars to keep course, but on a
night like this there was nothing to do but wait for daylight. Sails were lowered and
the crew got a well deserved rest from their labors at the oars. Shrew had been
taking a regular shift at them and was grateful for the break. Finding it difficult
to sleep in the cramped quarters below, he had come to the deck to breathe the fresh
air. He noticed a familiar figure sitting near the bow and sat down next to him.
"When did you start smoking, Crow?" asked Shrew as Crow pulled a long-stemmed
ivory pipe from under his jacket and began patting pipe weed into place.
Crow waved his hand with a flourish and produced a small flame that danced on the
end of his index finger. He proceeded to light his pipe, then extinguish the flame
with another extravagant gesture. "Pipe weed is a favorite among wizards, you know.
I'm acquiring a taste for it."
Shrew knew that his friend was no wizard, not yet anyway. To become a wizard
took years of study and hard work. Crow was barely a week into his apprenticeship.
Very little of Crow had been seen aboard The Holy Avenger since he had been taken on
as apprentice by Elysse. The two had spent hours on end sequestered in a small cabin
below deck. Flame production was one of the simplest of spells, but that Crow could
have mastered it in only a week proved that he had tremendous potential for magic.
"I don't suppose there's been any action since the first day," Crow mused. That
had been frightening enough for anyone, with the Zuwayza harbor defenses shooting what
seemed like enough ballista stones to sink a fleet at them. But Captain Ljentazh and
his crew had performed magnificently, dodging one sure hit after another. "I never
want to go through anything like that again."
Shrew shrugged. "They say that the ballista crews are only trained to fire on
ships approaching the harbor. They really had to be lucky to hit a ship that was
sailing out of it."
"Lucky or not, we'd have been just as dead. Have you found out anything more
about this ship? Elysse doesn't want to talk about anything but magic."
"Yeah. About a year ago the Holy Avenger attacked and boarded a pirate ship. At
least, everybody here is convinced that the guy really WAS a pirate, but he claimed to
be a merchant and managed to produce bills of sale for everything he had on board. An
inquest found them guilty of malfeasance. They were all sentenced to three years of
doing sentry duty outside the harbor, and not be allowed to leave the ship in all that
time. The ship took some damage and lost a couple of crewmen. They were allowed
inside the harbor for repairs and to get some convicts as replacement crew. They
still weren't allowed on land and had to anchor out near the harbor mouth. I guess
Nar got aboard somehow, and convinced them to help him. How he did that I don't know.
They're all considered deserters and traitors now."
"So are we!" exclaimed Crow.
"If the mission succeeds, we'll be vindicated. If it fails, we'll be dead. So
what's it matter?" asked Shrew philosophically.
Crow stopped short of answering when Noachain appeared on deck, dressed in an
officer's uniform. He was accompanied by a midshipman who had been assigned to him as
a servant. Noachian was pointing angrily to his boots.
"Do you call those boots polished? They look like something out of a rag bin.
Take them below immediately. I want them looking presentable if it takes you all
night. Do you understand, Mr. Mujadim?"
"Yes sir," replied the young officer. He removed Noachian's boots with a tug and
disappeared below, but not before shooting a look of undisguised hatred in the Lord
Protector's direction when he though he was unobserved.
Noachian looked over at the pair on deck. "So hard to find good servants these
days, eh, Shrew? That fellow was ready to hang me from the yardarm as a thief when I
first came aboard. Such insolence to a Lord Protector can't go unpunished. That's
the Karnhorn way. And is that Crow over there with you? Why, I'd almost forgotten he
was aboard."
"Hello, Noachian," said Crow unenthusiastically. The two had never been friends.
"Did Nar explain the mission to you?"
Noachian nodded. "Yes. I understand that we have to gain the trust of the
Serva, and to do that we have to appear as traitors to the Empire. I still don't
understand why Nar chose infidels like yourselves for the mission when good loyal
Karnhorns like me would have been the better choice, but there's nothing I can do
about that...."
An anxious whisper from Shrew cut him off. "I see a ship out there."
"I don't see anything," said Noachian.
"If Shrew says there's a ship, then there's a ship," snapped Crow with annoyance.
"Shrew can see better than anyone in Alastari. That's why Nar wants us "infidels" on
the mission. Because we can do something besides yell at midshipmen and brag about
what great loyal Karnhorns we are!"
"You two can pick up your argument later," interrupted Shrew. "Right now we've
got an unknown ship to report."
*** *** ***
Zuwayza might be a great town for Karnhorns, thought Ottomund as he sat nursing
his drink at a dockside bar, but for blue dwarves like him it was deadly dull.
Wolfspider and his friends were off to who knows where, and it sure didn't seem like
they'd be back anytime soon. And that Mr. B. Natural could get on ANYBODY'S nerves.
Maybe it was time go head back to Aljafir.
The dwarf was startled out of his reverie when a small humanoid pulled out a
chair and sat down at his table. It took Ottomund a moment to remember who those
pointed ears and big yellow eyes belonged to. "Hello, Habmo," he said. "You're
looking a lot better than when last I saw you."
"The Karragit shamans have a way with swamp fever," grinned the half-Karragit
swavant. "When I learned you were in town, I tracked you down. I wonder if you might
like to go to a Carnival with me?"
"A Carnival?" repeated Ottomund with some confusion.
"Yes. A small one that operates just outside of town. You know, games, rides,
performers."
Ottomund eyed the swavant suspiciously. "They're not looking for a blue dwarf
for their freak show, are they?"
Habmo raised his eyebrows. "I never thought of that," he said. "No, actually
there's an exhibit there I'd like you to see. I can explain better after you've seen
it. If my theory is correct, it could have important ramifications for the future of
all Alastari in general and the Karnhorn Empire in particular. Will you come? I'll
buy the popcorn."
"How can I refuse?" replied Ottomund.

Sarebya:
"It's the invasion fleet, I tell you," Turlik said yet again. "More sails than I
could count, with the wind behind them, and headed for the coast just south of here."
"The invaders are not coming here," Cadiz Virkaj snapped. He was the commander
of the Emir of Sarebya's household troops. "If there are any invaders, which is
questionable. And I'll thank you not to go spreading this wild tale of yours and
causing a panic."
"But, Cadiz, I saw them!"
"Fishing boats," the cadiz said dismissingly. Anything further he might have
said was interrupted by the frantic clamor of the alarm bell in the tower overhead.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Cadiz Virkaj assembled his men with commendable speed, posting them at the points
where the harbor defenses could best benefit from their presence. Even the presence
of distracted citizens clogging the streets and shouting to know what the danger was
did not hamper this maneuver, because it was one which had been practiced many times.
Fixed-base catapults which had long since had their aim targeted on the harbor
entrance were uncovered and readied to fire. Messengers were dispatched to all
neighboring towns with word of the first sighting of the enemy fleet.
And then they waited, through a long afternoon when the scattered clouds of the
morning gathered overhead and began fitfully to rain. Occasionally a far-sighted
soldier on one of the heights would glimpse sails behind the curtain of rain, but none
came near enough to fire even the long-range ballistae at.
"They've pulled off to the south," Cadiz Virkaj muttered. He had taken up a
commanding position on the top of the tower which formed the center of the harbor
defense, as was his right and duty. Sarebya, at the mouth of the modest Mirsil River,
was cupped in gentle hills which restricted his view of the coastline to the north and
south, but his position gave him a complete picture of the state of the harbor. "I
knew they didn't mean to land here. They've gone after Zuwayza--"
"Could their navigators be so incompetent?" Turlik asked.
Virkaj shrugged, as though to say that he wasn't answerable for the quality of
Serevadan navigators. He glanced around, then stiffened as black smoke billowed up
behind the hills to the south. "They've bypassed the city!" he gasped. "They're on
the shore to the south!" He turned and plunged down the stairs with reckless haste,
dragging Turlik after him. "Take the Red Lion Company and ride south," he commanded
the younger man. "If they've landed in force, you won't be able to stop them, but
slow them down, kill as many as you can, and hold them to the beach. I must tell the
Emir."
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Hey all, can you say three-peat? Looks like I'm still duelhampster and you're all my
lackeys once again. I need one win to graduate, hopefully I'll get it this turn. My
challenge went out to Joltin' Joe; here's to a throne locked up by the APL.
Little Bunny FruFru
SPY REPORT
Thankyouthankyou. It's great for me, The Unknown Spymaster to be back in
ALJAFIR. Hope you enjoy the show. Oh, who am I kidding? I already got paid! For
every winner there is a loser. Speaking of losers, lets take a look at DREAM
REAVERS, who went down to 7th from 16th. Life is tough. It looks like the guys(?)
at ARCTIC GUARDS had a good week as they went 4-1-0 to put them in 2nd place. I
guess steroids help! Hey everybody, watch out for SARSIPPIUS ARK, who flew up 20
points in the rankings after mashing KATYANN like a melon. Keep your eye on this
beast. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. KATYANN was
defeated by SARSIPPIUS ARK and drops 13 points. The most challenged warrior this
week was LITTLE BUNNY FRUFRU. If this keeps up, our Duelmaster's going to need more
avoids! SIMONE got through to the Duelmaster this turn. No doubt she was more than
anxious to kick LITTLE BUNNY FRUFRU's tail out of the throne! It's a proud day for
the DAMAGE INC. stable, as their warrior, SIMONE, ascended the Duelmaster's throne.
4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that
location.
Here is other news that is of note. And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't
avoid DAMAGE INC., please raise you hand. Wow. Does ALJAFIR really have that many
liars? Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch SHADOW LEGION's act in the arena.
Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from DAMAGE INC.. In a touching
display by a 'touched' warrior, S-LOMME went after DENEAUX, who was higher by 24
points. Well, when the dust settled, S-LOMME defeated DENEAUX.
Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the
most interesting, though! Yes, and another newbie bites the dust as MUNIN goes down
under the sword of R BAGGIO. Thanks to this, R BAGGIO now has 33 recognition points.
Knowing when to use the right tactics at the proper time is a very important step on
the road to Duelmaster.
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in ALJAFIR have no
sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Well, there goes another Spy
Report. Good luck in next week's fights. Its been real, and its been fun, but it
hasn't been real fun...-- The Unknown Spymaster

Umbra & Vic -- Thanks for the congrats on Top Team/Top mover. The only problem is
that every other week I bite the big one so I can't keep top spot. Pattern says I
should move back up this week. -- Yukon
Jackie O Hell -- 'Tis a pleasant surprise to find you here. It's too bad about Luci
Fur. She was one of the Jaguars' favorites. Most of the Jaguars, as you knew them,
have graduated. Only Lorelei lingers in ineptitude. -- Noachian
Trodjle Jr. -- With a name like Cold Blood, what should I have expected? -- The
Recently Deceased
Gungnir -- Hmm...I think I'd like to try you again some time. -- Queen Wasp
Mr. Ganesha -- Even bare fisted you gave me a fair beating. Are you a Kung Fu master
or did you just forget your gear? -- Spitfire
All -- Well, Darion's left and now it's my turn. It has been an honor competing
against everyone. -- Thorin Lacksin
Ravenwind -- No problem. I seem to help a lot of people that way. -- Dana Alroth
Grasshopper and Zues -- The following warriors were active in Noblish when I left
(turn 10) and have graduated from Free Blades arenas; Alvin of Aaron's Angels, Tarnog
& Ecnalav of Backstabbers, Ivanovah of The Embassy, Fern Radcliff of The Marauders, T.
Gargrave & Falstaff of Rude Mechanicals. Queeg of The Hawks has recently appeared in
Talahya. Added to the six
Nobblies from Aljafir...that makes 14 Nobblie grads that I know of. Can anyone else
help with this list? -- Ottomund
Thorin Lacksin -- Congratulations on joining the list! -- Ottomund
Simone -- Nice work! You are a tough competitor. -- J. Wolfspider
Raelin -- Belated congrats on beating the Dark Arena. Now stick around & join the
Nobblie graduate list. -- J. Wolfspider

have e-mail. You may email me at TalonVolksie@aol.com. -- Talon V.
Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.
Cult of the Dragon (339), DM-43
All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
Dragonslayers (636) in Solven (DM 22)

To anyone starting a new team -- No good sales pitch or gimmicks (yet). If you're
adding a team, please put it in Jurine, DM-61. We only have one unchartered team and
eight teams total. So why come to Jurine? Simply put; WE ARE BEGGING YOU!!! --
