By Angmar the Vet
It's Hallow's Eve and the moon is almost in alignment. When the moon is full,
and directly overhead, the ritual will begin. At the stroke of midnight the Master
Magus lifts his knife above the sacrifice tied to the unholy alter. Her screams
pierce the night, filled with terror. She watches as Magnus plunges the knife through
her heart. Her blood is caught in a silver bowl as it runs down the sides of the
alter.
The fire in the brazier grows higher as the blood is added. The other Brothers
of the Foul begin to chant. The Master Magus starts casting his spell to summon a
demon lord. As the chanting grows louder, the Master Magus is shouting at the sky,
forcing his willpower into the summons. As expected, the fire grows higher and
higher, hotter and hotter. Inside the flames something is starting to form.
It grows larger, taking on a shape that looks almost human, yet not. A face
appears, a horrid, ugly, dog face. Horns are growing out of the head that is forming
in the flames, growing a neck, body, arms, legs and bat-like wings to go with it. At
the end of the hands, long fingers begin to form claws. It is almost whole. It is
almost alive.
The Brothers of the Foul are backing away, not taking their eyes off what is
coming to life right before them. The Master Magus stands there defiantly, conquering
his fear of this beast of Chaos incarnate. There is no backing down now. If he
falters, or utters a misplaced word, all of his dreamed up powers will come crashing
down on him. He wills his spirit into the final words of the spell. "Oh Great Demon
of Chaos, I command you to heed my summons! You will obey me! I am your Master!"
A hollow, mocking, evil laugh comes from a throat that was not meant for such a
sound. The flames extinguish with a hiss. The demon stands ten feet tall, towering
over the Magus. It stares down at the puny human that summoned it from a burning
hell. "I Have No Master," it rumbles around teeth sharp as daggers. Reaching down
with long arms it grabs the Magus in a death grip. The screams of terror from the
Magus are louder and more spine-chilling than those of the sacrifice. Opening its
large mouth, it bites the head off of Master Magus. The sight of their Master being
eaten is enough for the Brothers of the Foul to start a panic. Running for their
lives, they give no thought to the massive Evil they brought to this world.
Stomping after the fleeing humans, the demon grabs another to feed its growing
hunger. They cannot run fast enough to get away from it. With every life swallowed
by the demon, it grows larger. Now it stands over twenty feet tall. Its legs are so
long it catches more Brothers with every step. Soon, all but two are captured and
eaten. One of them turns to look at the demon, and wishes he had not. Then there was
only one.
The demon's hollow laughter follows the lone Brother. He runs blindly, crashing
through thorn bushes, scrambling around trees. In the moonlight he does not see the
large shape above him. Swooping out of the sky, the demon lands on the human, driving
him to the ground. His death cries are cut off as the demon's claws pierce his body.
Eating the last Brother of the Foul was not enough to sate the demon's hunger.
It craves more humans, more lives, to satisfy his need to feed. It flies away in
search of more prey.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN

A few more Guardsmen dropped out, exhausted, as they frogmarched double-time back
to the palace. Andarus was surprised that Prince Malic managed to keep going. He was
a youngish fellow and not fat, but his physique showed no signs of exceptional
strength or endurance. He appeared to be sustained by nothing but a grim
determination. Well, Andarus thought, the man was dedicated to the city and people of
Talcama if nothing else, and since it appeared that the elven vixen Tyree was planning
trouble for same, no wonder he hung on till the bitter end.
As they approached the palace, it became evident that nothing was going on there.
The rain of frogs had petered out, although hundreds of thousands of the little
buggers were hopping about and croaking happily. At least, Andarus assumed they were
happy, since it was Happy Frog Day. There were sounds of a party from the park across
the way, but other than that, and the near-deafening chorus of frogs, the palace was
quiet.
Panting and red-faced, Malic waddled up the wide steps to the palace entrance.
Two guards there immediately flung the doors open for him. "His Highness the Prince!"
one of them announced in a ringing tone. Malic took one staggering step through the
doorway and was caught by the butler as his exhausted legs gave out.
Andarus, not quite so spent, gasped, "Where's the riot?"
"Riot, milord?" the butler asked.
"Some other trouble, then. Where is it?"
"There is no trouble, Lord Andarus. This is Happy Frog Day, when all of Talcama
celebrates the renewal of life. All troubles are suspended until tomorrow, the start
of Stinking Frog Week. I wish you an enjoyable remainder of the day, milord." The
butler inclined his head, the best he could do for a bow, with the exhausted prince
leaning on him.
Malic raised his weary head from the butler's shoulder to glare at Andarus.
"There's no trouble here," he said.
"I heard that, yes," Andarus replied.
"We double-timed all the way up to Regency Boulevard on your say-so, and then we
double-timed back because you said if the trouble wasn't there, it must be here."
"Yes, I realize that. Sorry."
"Sorry? You're sorry? Do you know what we do, in Talcama, to people who are
sorry?"
"I should imagine that you accept their apologies?" Andarus said hopefully.
"Of course we do. But dash it, Andarus, I trusted your judgement!"
"Indeed you did, and it turned out that I was mistaken. I do apologize."
"That was a very long way to run in frogwalkers!"
"It certainly was. I am deeply sorry." Andarus bent down to unbuckle one of his
frogwalkers. As soon as he removed it, his calf and ankle felt a sensation of blessed
relief. He quickly removed the other and said, "Let me help you out of those walkers,
your Highness."
"All right." Malic lifted one weary foot, and then the other, while his friend
removed the unwieldy gear. "I forgive you, Andarus. But I don't want to hear any
more about any plots from Tyree. Let's go to the library and get ourselves warm and
dry. Harcourt, we'll be needing alcohol. Something bracing, say hot brandy with
butter melted in it. And hearty sustenance. And the same for the Guardsmen who went
with us, if you please. Oh, and alcohol."
As Andarus followed the staggering monarch into the salon, he had the sinking
feeling that this was exactly Tyree's plan--to destroy his credibility as an advisor,
leaving Malic alone and vulnerable to her next devious plot.

Tsaumarn:
They had entered a kitchen, one big enough to cook meals for a hundred men
without crowding. There was no one in sight, but double doors were open onto the
courtyard on the other side from their point of entry, and the sounds of combat were
loud and steady. Ultraist guessed that the cooks and scullions had rushed out to help
fight off Barkab and his two followers.
"Quickly now," Saureza said, "we must make the most of the time Barkab is gaining
for us!" She darted toward one of the interior doors.
He followed, and found that the passage behind the door led to a large room with
a long table down the middle and a sort of step-like arrangement of shelves along one
side on which was displayed a bewildering assortment of probably valuable things. It
was as though a packrat with expensive tastes had set all his miscellaneous
acquisitions out there so that other packrats could see and envy his collection.
"What about my friend in the dungeon?" he asked.
"First things first," the woman said briskly. "This is our mission first." She
was scanning the heterogeneous collection with desperate haste and suddenly leaped
forward and seized something.
In all the clutter, he couldn't be sure what it had been, not that he needed to
know, but he was curious. What was so valuable to Barkab's tribe that he and his
followers had risked death or capture to get it? All he could recall for sure was
that there had been some kind of crystal that flashed, and that it was small enough
for Saureza to conceal in her clothes. "Now what?" he asked, trying to watch all the
room's many doors at once.
"Now the dungeons and your friends," she said.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
It was, Doc LeMa$e decided, about the way it must feel to live on the edge of a
volcano. The Overlord of Sibikhas gave the impression of being about to erupt at any
moment, and over the hours of their imprisonment he had become less and less willing
to listen to rational advice. That Gryzash had considerable magical power was
obvious, hell, the man practically seethed with power. But there was great magical
power binding this dungeon into its form and purpose, too. Although the big manager
would yield to no one in his willingness to undertake desperate and violent tasks, he
had no desire to be present when Gryzash's power clashed with the power built into
this foundation. Not if it could be avoided.
These reflections were interrupted by sounds from the corridor outside their
cell: marching feet and clanging metal, coming nearer.
"They're coming for us," LeMa$e said with satisfaction. "Maybe now we'll have a
chance to find out what this is all about, state our own case--"
"If harm has come to Morra," Gryzash snarled through set teeth, "I will kill
every one of them."
"So shall we all," LeMa$e answered impatiently, "but let's not buy trouble. She
may have received no harm--"
"I mistrust all here," Chezarnoi muttered from the other side of the cell.
Magic crackled around the door, power crawling like lightning on the bars.
LeMa$e leaped back with an oath. He guessed that a mage of respectable power stood on
the other side. Respectable, but not great--freed of the hampering spells of this
place, he himself could have destroyed the fellow with one hand tied behind his back.
But he was not freed of the hampering spells, and any attempt to engage in a magical
battle here would be futile at best. At worst, it would set off Gryzash, and the
Overlord was a lot too much like a powerful bomb for him to--
He leaped on the Overlord quickly, just in time to prevent disaster. His weight
and momentum were enough to fling Gryzash against the stone wall and stun the man
temporarily. It was enough. The door opened and guards entered warily; the magician
remained outside but clearly prepared to take a hand if needed. The three prisoners
were chained and hustled out into the corridor, then up a seemingly endless spiral
stair.
Elsewhere in Tsaumarn:
It was the Rirorni Cook who brought the news, bursting in on Varndis Abeq and the
gladiators as they planned their departure. "Lord Sa Kolke is arresting all in the
city who are not Rirorni and have no safe pass!" he announced.
"The city depends on foreigners coming here to trade," Zeus pointed out. "How
can he dare to drive out all the traders?"
"All I know is that the Defender's troops are going through every serai arresting
people," the Cook said, shrugging. "I am Rirorni and face no risk."
"And I have a safe pass," Varndis Abeq said. He looked around at the gladiators
with an expression of such innocence that they were immediately suspicious. "I could
include you all under the protection of my pass, if you will place yourselves in my
hands unreservedly."
"Unreservedly meaning what?" Candyacid asked suspiciously.
"I could not lie to the Defender's agents," the trader said virtuously, "but if I
could truthfully tell them that you are all my bondsmen--"
"Why not come right out and call us your slaves?" Renae snarled. Her fingers
clenched and unclenched.
Candyacid reached over and stilled her companion's hands. "We will leave
immediately," she said. "There are no gates to passed, our gear is already packed,
and we can be gone in half an hour--with luck, before the arresting party gets here.
Renae, if you'll tell Raveln, I'll get our mounts. Meet me at the rear gate of the
serai as fast as you can."
"That goes for us, too," Zeus said coldly. Columbine nodded, but didn't speak;
she was thrusting the last of their possessions into packs.
"You can't!" Playgirl said. "You have to go with Varndis to--"
"We'll meet him down the road and go on from there," the Delarquan said. "And
you'd better come with us."
"There is no need. I am his partner," Playgirl answered smugly.
"The gods damn all Karnhorns," Columbine muttered under her breath.
"Treacherous, every one."
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
It doesn't seem to be such a tradition in Talcama to write a Duelmaster's Column,
so I won't say much. I'm glad to go to Lady Sheila's aid. It is getting too quiet in
Talcama. What once was, seems long lost. I will pray for your resurgence, but I fear
my chants will be on deaf ears.
Have at it, Suave and Doc.

SPY REPORT
A man once shared that the key to life is to recognize the difference between the
haves and the have-nots! Then, once you know the difference, make sure you belong to
the first group. And if you don't, figure out how to get there. He was later killed
by a thief when he refused to give up his possessions.
JOLLY and THE NEON NECROMANCER have it, at least this turn! BURN N' PILLAGE had
a perfect turn, going 5-0, led by the two biggest winning up-challenges. The MAD
SCIENTISTS, while 'only' going 4-1, watched QUASAR beat the previous Duelmaster, now
Lord Protector, EPITOME. QUASAR was immediately granted immortality himself.
The second biggest fight this week was MARJORAM posting a challenge against
TROJAN MAN. The fans jeered and booed at the two for 11 minutes before MARJORAM
emerged victorious. While perhaps not the most thrilling fighters to watch, you
cannot argue with their success. We'll see if MARJORAM can defy the odds and continue
his winning ways into the much harder champions class.
Only one big downchallenge this turn, with GEOMANCER taking a buy against the
winless MODE -13. MOB BOSS was the most challenged this turn. The movement this turn
was mostly positive. 18 warriors rose a class, gaining a total of 198 recognition
points. 12 of these gained at least 10 points from the turn and CUTTER and IRIDIUM
were high at 18 points each. Only 5 warriors dropped a class, losing a total of 41
points, led by SID VICIOUS and PLASTIC BUNNY #51 (11 each).
HANG FIVE lost its third warrior in five turns. DR. SURFER's remaining warriors
will be busy avenging the other two bloodfeuds. ANGMAR continues to feel the blues as
his new recruits did not perform as well as he'd hoped and one definitely will be
getting a new recruit to replace it. I guess he didn't find his CHAINSAW at a
reputable dealer.
In the dark arena, the dark ladies decided they'd take the easy way and let an
unfortunate Black Orc face CELISTON. I'd say they did Talcama a favor, since we're
one orc closer to ridding ALASTARI of the wretched creatures.
And now it's tournament time. Many of you are already on your way out of town.
It's possible we won't see some of you again. Old ASSUR gave us the benchmark we have
to beat. 42 entries last time? WOW. That's more than half of you who fight here in
the arena. Oh I know there'll be some that spend all their time preparing for
tournaments. (And I don't know how they do so well--without the practical experience
--I guess they learn some pretty nifty tricks from those tourney trainers.) And with
my untrained eye, I'll pick the warriors who seem obvious to do well: QUASAR, DARK
STAR, THE CROCODILE GOD, CELISTON, CUTTER, COSMIC LANCE, PLASTIC BUNNY #51, CHASTITY
BELT, and IRON HEAD LEE. I know, you all could have picked out those warriors. Well,
I'll go one further and take CUTTER as the warrior I think most likely to succeed. --

PERSONAL ADS
All -- Well, we're not doing much hacking and we're not doing much slashing, but let's
see what my new recruits can do. -- Angmar, mgr. Hack and Slash
Angmar -- Welcome to 18, the city that never sleeps (because we're always up watching
our warriors fight at night and waiting for the new recruits). -- Suave
Doc Steele -- The arena belongs to no one player, it belongs to me. I just have to
figure out what legal paperwork and mumbo jumbo needs to be filed in which bureaucracy
and how many square feet I have to document before they give me the official key to
the city and scissors to the ribbon. Until then, you can have the TC's and TV's
(heaven knows I don't get 'em). And you're probably right: if it continues this way,
I most likely will get bored again and quit. Because I believe the backbone is in the
people behind the paper warriors. -- Suave
I've got a great little basket beside my desk where I file lots of important
papers. You can file it there! -- Sherik
TUM -- Ouch. First you beat up on me, then you kill off the only worthwhile recruit I
run. I'd bloodfeud if I thought I had anyone that could beat you. Sadly, I no longer
have a 40+ fight guy to pick on newbies anymore. Even more sadly, if I continue
running these guys until they have 40+ fights, they probably can't beat newbies. I
seem to remember something about "ratings" in the times I used to play.... -- Suave
Mode-13 -- This is your moment in the sun, you blister. -- Suave
Is that his problem? Blisters from the sun?
Ike -- HA! You never beat Lizzie Dole! Nor can you take out this turn's non-duck.
And you'll never get to beat any of my AD guys. You're probably better than them, but
they'll never run again! So there! -- Suave
Assur -- A wise man once said that you learn from your mistakes. There are none more
learned than myself. However, that wise man never said how I'm supposed to apply all
this junk I've learned. -- Suave
Assur -- So much for stumping the statguy. Why don't you run another one of those
"Best of each style" articles? Or "Oldest warriors killed before their invites"? Or
"Best debate points between Timid Turtles and Ragamuffins"? -- Suave
Predictions: Six managers will write personals this turn, Celiston gets another kill,
Mode-13 gets his first W, two new teams join (or return), and I get nothing runnable
from the rollup gods. -- Suave
Does the spy count? I make six. -- Sherik
Plus one more manager at the last minute. -- Ed.
TUM -- That's strange. I thought Lizzie was a slasher. Guess I changed my mind and
didn't notice in her first fight. -- Suave
Phido -- Justice prevails. Arrogance is deflated. Who knows what will happen in the
next case. -- Chief Justice
Nothing unless you come to court. - Sherik
Suave -- Hey! Y'all Southren boy now? -- Queen Bee (smiling at the thought)
Howdy, Suave, padner. That be yer raght nace bandana yuh got, cowpoke. -- Ace
Dark Circle et al -- The individual members of DC and some of the many deeds would be
worthy of the Alastarian Hall of Fame. (If there were one.) A hearty congratulations
and a big thank you for the great things you have done for the game are in order. One
would have to say that even the alleged dastardly actions have created great memories.
Many in the game owe much to many of you. We in The Consortium salute you all. -- The
Consortium Elders
Suave -- We, too, are well represented in Aradi (60). We believe that Mr. Steele's
words greatly underestimate the aura, pleasure and competitiveness of the arena.
Certainly some of the 10-15 spotlights and 100-200 personals are hokey and
insignificant, but most are not. And the competition is fierce. The biggest
differences between it and Talcama are 100-200 personals, 10-15 spotlights, 50-100
more warriors and a more Andorian style. You would be a perfect fit. -- The Top Dogs
Suave -- I plan to play as long as I enjoy it. And if you ever win a +5 skill prize I
will be happy to take it off your hands. I save Talcama newsletters so I will have
proof that you promised it to me. That is, of course, if a snowball fight in hell is
not proof enough. -- Doc Steele
Assur -- You'll need to take another crack at that prediction. Celiston will not see
a single political point if I can help it. He will sandbag and look for the TC. I
will be tossing the occasional fight as I did last turn for as long as that works to
get him back down the champions if that helps you in your figuring. You probably know
more about minimum recognition than I do. He's gone 7-3 and 6-3 in tourneys. How
many kills do you think he can get with no political points? -- Doc Steele
No look. No try. DO! -- Sherik
Concrete God -- I thought you would learn well. I hope the political points are not a
problem. -- Celiston

Doc Steele -- You use your immortality prizes wrong, you see. You use them on
warriors that tend to be good and don't need them! (If you win, you can't die....)
You need to use them on lesser warriors. I'll gladly put your next one to good use.
At his current rate, Mode -13 won't graduate for at least 61 more fights. That gives
you over two years. -- Assur
Are you sick? -- Sherik
Suave -- I've finished the biscuits! Care to join me for tea? -- Assur
Suave -- You predicted I'd win at 37. But the fact is, I'm not going to win for
awhile--I assure you--unless someone decides to throw one to me! Even then, it'll be
an interesting fight. I've got 38 fights myself with no ratings. And no, I'm not a
stat trainer! -- Mode -13
P.S. Though, that begs the obvious.... What about creating a warrior that was
designed to NEVER train skills. Stat trains only. Imagine those bragging rights!!!
"I've got a Primus warrior that burned 120 skills!" -- Assur
You've convinced me! -- Sherik
Iron Lung -- Looks like you need something stronger! -- Assurnasirbanipal
Welcome To Talcama, manager! (again)
Sid Vicious -- Well, well, well. A one-shot wonder! That win had quite a nice taste.
-- Caviar
Cry-O-Lit -- Hear ye, hear ye. Your punishment hath been set aside. You are free. --
Chief Justice
Cutter -- You fought top shelf, but I was on top of my game. Salute. -- Epitome
Hey y'all cowpokes! Gonna miss muh gal, Epitome. Yup. -- Ace
Ace has asked me to provide you with information concerning Epitome; 14(+3)-21(+2)-13-
7(+2)-21-6(+1)-12(+2), TP. AdEx Parry (mode), VL/LO/Small shield. -- Queen Bee
Prince Malic -- We Top Dogs feel real good. We all wore our frogwalkers today, and
didn't crush a single frog. -- Queen Bee
P.S. Caviar wanted to crush one, though, but we wouldn't let it happen!

have e-mail. You may email me at TalonVolksie@aol.com. -- Talon V.
Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.
Cult of the Dragon (339), DM-43
All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
Dragonslayers (636) in Solven (DM 22)
16 October 1999
To anyone starting a new team -- No good sales pitch or gimmicks (yet). If you're
adding a team, please put it in Jurine, DM-61. We only have one unchartered team and
eight teams total. So why come to Jurine? Simply put; WE ARE BEGGING YOU!!! --
