All Hail My Crimson Brothers!

The Point Race has begun & my appointed position as General of the Crimson
Vengeance is at stake! I did not plan on running a Team here until I discovered that
Milchamah [in DM 33 which is the Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena in Alastari!] had
won the dubious honor of being the Team Suffering the Most Defeats [29] during the
recent Hunt-A-Thon Contest on Niatoli Island! A Tiebreaker between 3 Teams gave
Milchamah the Prize of retaining Femizons [DM 54] plus receiving a New Team Rollup!
With that New Team Rollup I am sending Yawlah [Hebrew for Devour] to do just that in
the DM 19 Point Race competition!
Arriving soon to represent Yawlah are:

1. Yawnaw [Do Violence]
2. Yigawl [Avenger]
3. Yawgaw [To Afflict; Cause Grief]
4. Yehlek [A Devourer]
5. Yiblehawm [Devouring People]

Do be so kind, my Crimson Brothers, as to identify yourselves & your Teams! It
would also be appreciated if the most illustrious ED would identify All the Teams that
are registered in Zuwayza! Thank you ever so much with Weapons Held High!

The Storm Sea air had cooled. The sky had clouded over, obscuring the stars. On
clear nights, the Holy Avenger's navigator used the stars to keep course, but on a
night like this there was nothing to do but wait for daylight. Sails were lowered and
the crew got a well deserved rest from their labors at the oars. Shrew had been
taking a regular shift at them and was grateful for the break. Finding it difficult
to sleep in the cramped quarters below, he had come to the deck to breathe the fresh
air. He noticed a familiar figure sitting near the bow and sat down next to him.
"When did you start smoking, Crow?" asked Shrew as Crow pulled a long-stemmed
ivory pipe from under his jacket and began patting pipe weed into place.
Crow waved his hand with a flourish and produced a small flame that danced on the
end of his index finger. He proceeded to light his pipe, then extinguish the flame
with another extravagant gesture. "Pipe weed is a favorite among wizards, you know.
I'm acquiring a taste for it."
Shrew knew that his friend was no wizard, not yet anyway. To become a wizard
took years of study and hard work. Crow was barely a week into his apprenticeship.
Very little of Crow had been seen aboard The Holy Avenger since he had been taken on
as apprentice by Elysse. The two had spent hours on end sequestered in a small cabin
below deck. Flame production was one of the simplest of spells, but that Crow could
have mastered it in only a week proved that he had tremendous potential for magic.
"I don't suppose there's been any action since the first day," Crow mused. That
had been frightening enough for anyone, with the Zuwayza harbor defenses shooting what
seemed like enough ballista stones to sink a fleet at them. But Captain Ljentazh and
his crew had performed magnificently, dodging one sure hit after another. "I never
want to go through anything like that again."
Shrew shrugged. "They say that the ballista crews are only trained to fire on
ships approaching the harbor. They really had to be lucky to hit a ship that was
sailing out of it."
"Lucky or not, we'd have been just as dead. Have you found out anything more
about this ship? Elysse doesn't want to talk about anything but magic."
"Yeah. About a year ago the Holy Avenger attacked and boarded a pirate ship. At
least, everybody here is convinced that the guy really WAS a pirate, but he claimed to
be a merchant and managed to produce bills of sale for everything he had on board. An
inquest found them guilty of malfeasance. They were all sentenced to three years of
doing sentry duty outside the harbor, and not be allowed to leave the ship in all that
time. The ship took some damage and lost a couple of crewmen. They were allowed
inside the harbor for repairs and to get some convicts as replacement crew. They
still weren't allowed on land and had to anchor out near the harbor mouth. I guess
Nar got aboard somehow, and convinced them to help him. How he did that I don't know.
They're all considered deserters and traitors now."
     "So are we!" exclaimed Crow.
"If the mission succeeds, we'll be vindicated. If it fails, we'll be dead. So
what's it matter?" asked Shrew philosophically.
Crow stopped short of answering when Noachain appeared on deck, dressed in an
officer's uniform. He was accompanied by a midshipman who had been assigned to him as
a servant. Noachian was pointing angrily to his boots.
"Do you call those boots polished? They look like something out of a rag bin.
Take them below immediately. I want them looking presentable if it takes you all
night. Do you understand, Mr. Mujadim?"
"Yes sir," replied the young officer. He removed Noachian's boots with a tug and
disappeared below, but not before shooting a look of undisguised hatred in the Lord
Protector's direction when he though he was unobserved.
Noachian looked over at the pair on deck. "So hard to find good servants these
days, eh, Shrew? That fellow was ready to hang me from the yardarm as a thief when I
first came aboard. Such insolence to a Lord Protector can't go unpunished. That's
the Karnhorn way. And is that Crow over there with you? Why, I'd almost forgotten he
was aboard."
"Hello, Noachian," said Crow unenthusiastically. The two had never been friends.
"Did Nar explain the mission to you?"
Noachian nodded. "Yes. I understand that we have to gain the trust of the
Serva, and to do that we have to appear as traitors to the Empire. I still don't
understand why Nar chose infidels like yourselves for the mission when good loyal
Karnhorns like me would have been the better choice, but there's nothing I can do
about that...."
An anxious whisper from Shrew cut him off. "I see a ship out there."
"I don't see anything," said Noachian.
"If Shrew says there's a ship, then there's a ship," snapped Crow with annoyance.
"Shrew can see better than anyone in Alastari. That's why Nar wants us "infidels" on
the mission. Because we can do something besides yell at midshipmen and brag about
what great loyal Karnhorns we are!"
"You two can pick up your argument later," interrupted Shrew. "Right now we've
got an unknown ship to report."
                          *** *** ***
Zuwayza might be a great town for Karnhorns, thought Ottomund as he sat nursing
his drink at a dockside bar, but for blue dwarves like him it was deadly dull.
Wolfspider and his friends were off to who knows where, and it sure didn't seem like
they'd be back anytime soon. And that Mr. B. Natural could get on ANYBODY'S nerves.
Maybe it was time go head back to Aljafir.
The dwarf was startled out of his reverie when a small humanoid pulled out a
chair and sat down at his table. It took Ottomund a moment to remember who those
pointed ears and big yellow eyes belonged to. "Hello, Habmo," he said. "You're
looking a lot better than when last I saw you."
"The Karragit shamans have a way with swamp fever," grinned the half-Karragit
swavant. "When I learned you were in town, I tracked you down. I wonder if you might
like to go to a Carnival with me?"
"A Carnival?" repeated Ottomund with some confusion.
"Yes. A small one that operates just outside of town. You know, games, rides,
performers."
Ottomund eyed the swavant suspiciously. "They're not looking for a blue dwarf
for their freak show, are they?"
Habmo raised his eyebrows. "I never thought of that," he said. "No, actually
there's an exhibit there I'd like you to see. I can explain better after you've seen
it. If my theory is correct, it could have important ramifications for the future of
all Alastari in general and the Karnhorn Empire in particular. Will you come? I'll
buy the popcorn."
"How can I refuse?" replied Ottomund.

Sarebya:

"It's the invasion fleet, I tell you," Turlik said yet again. "More sails than I
could count, with the wind behind them, and headed for the coast just south of here."
"The invaders are not coming here," Cadiz Virkaj snapped. He was the commander
of the Emir of Sarebya's household troops. "If there are any invaders, which is
questionable. And I'll thank you not to go spreading this wild tale of yours and
causing a panic."
     "But, Cadiz, I saw them!"
"Fishing boats," the cadiz said dismissingly. Anything further he might have
said was interrupted by the frantic clamor of the alarm bell in the tower overhead.
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
Cadiz Virkaj assembled his men with commendable speed, posting them at the points
where the harbor defenses could best benefit from their presence. Even the presence
of distracted citizens clogging the streets and shouting to know what the danger was
did not hamper this maneuver, because it was one which had been practiced many times.
Fixed-base catapults which had long since had their aim targeted on the harbor
entrance were uncovered and readied to fire. Messengers were dispatched to all
neighboring towns with word of the first sighting of the enemy fleet.
And then they waited, through a long afternoon when the scattered clouds of the
morning gathered overhead and began fitfully to rain. Occasionally a far-sighted
soldier on one of the heights would glimpse sails behind the curtain of rain, but none
came near enough to fire even the long-range ballistae at.
"They've pulled off to the south," Cadiz Virkaj muttered. He had taken up a
commanding position on the top of the tower which formed the center of the harbor
defense, as was his right and duty. Sarebya, at the mouth of the modest Mirsil River,
was cupped in gentle hills which restricted his view of the coastline to the north and
south, but his position gave him a complete picture of the state of the harbor. "I
knew they didn't mean to land here. They've gone after Zuwayza--"
"Could their navigators be so incompetent?" Turlik asked.
Virkaj shrugged, as though to say that he wasn't answerable for the quality of
Serevadan navigators. He glanced around, then stiffened as black smoke billowed up
behind the hills to the south. "They've bypassed the city!" he gasped. "They're on
the shore to the south!" He turned and plunged down the stairs with reckless haste,
dragging Turlik after him. "Take the Red Lion Company and ride south," he commanded
the younger man. "If they've landed in force, you won't be able to stop them, but
slow them down, kill as many as you can, and hold them to the beach. I must tell the
Emir."

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

MH: This is your Morning Herald reporter in Zuwayza. The city is turned out for the
arena victory of Hotte Korn over the previously unbeaten Duelmaster. Here comes
someone now. Sir! Sir! May we have a word? What is your name? I see you just
came out of the Noachian Cantina.

MM: I'm Mr. Mojo. New here with my team Eastern Horde. I'm trying to find out why
we were given the team number 333.

MH: That is a strange number. Maybe an omen of great portent. What is going on in
the Cantina? Seems a bit riotous.

MM: Not sure I know. A Boz and Strategist were shouting that some crazy street
juggler took their list of loyal Karnhorn defenders to wrap up a deck of cards he
had cut in half and some rare deadly blue and white zebra killer bat flew out and
flew up in the rafters where it seemed to have been attacked, as bits floated
down and the Karnhorn list is gone and so is the juggler. The innkeeper Noachian
claims the juggler is an ancient Carny called Zero of Fools who can walk the road
and travels with a dog and one-eyed cat. All very strange. Very strange.

MH: I was talking to a crazy juggler, but he's gone now and I thought I saw a cat and
dog jump from the roof of the Cantina. BUT WATCH OUT! The palace guard is
racing down the street. SIR! SIR! Captain of the Guard! What is going on?

CG: Sorry sir. No time. A break in or attack on the palace by someone called
Anagram or maybe Criptocrypt who somehow knows secret ways into the palace and
may have entered the Walled Garden of Father Mansarno.

MH: Is that possible?

CG: No, but that is the wild rumor.

MH: There you have it. Hotte Korn the new DM. On his way to the Isle, and the
palace invaded by some mysterious fiend called Anagram or Criptocrypt. Who is
this fiend? What is he up to? The Herald will cover this story....

                                      SPY REPORT

Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! He who laughs last didn't get the joke.
Speaking of laughing at jokes, observe JAGUAR WARRIORS. Last week they got 1-1-0 to
drop by 5! Practice pays for DUKE OF EARL, who pummelled WILD WEST, to pocket 27
points. AMOK certainly had a baffled expression on hers face, after losing to LADY
LILA and losing 15 points in the process! Duelmaster HOTTE KORN from CARNIVAL is
going for the gold, as he challenged PSYCHOMECH's CRAZY IGOR. Ooh, the excitement!
Those who hoped for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by CRAZY IGOR, of PSYCHOMECH,
who despite a 12-11-1 couldn't overcome ZUWAYZA's Number 1. Word has it one team in
ZUWAYZA is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life!
So much to report, so little time! To quell some nasty rumors, the guys in
LORDS INC. are not carrying any incurable diseases. No need to avoid 'em. The
warriors of LORDS INC. found their efforts at combat frustrated as PSYCHOMECH
apparently had more important things to do than fight. Everyone is famous for
fifteen minutes, and BAD MEDICINE is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't
OLDER BUDWEISER proud! Place your bets! MICAWBER is the long shot of the week:
they TV challenged PREMIERE, up by 35. It's not whether you win or lose, but how
many points you get (2). Right, MICAWBER? Call 'im brash! Call 'im brassy! Call
'im brave! Call 'im sassy! THE FOOL will face SIR BLUEBELL, up by 30. Aaaah, just
call 'im dead meat. Soopreyes, soopreyes! THE FOOL emerges from the fray 6 points
the richer. Good show, THE FOOL!
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Oh hard! that to
strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting!
All good things must come to an end. Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards
fat! Like a mixed metaphor, and an overtaxed simile, I now bid ZUWAYZA farewell--
Novgorodny Vir

Mr. Mojo -- Welcome to the Holy City. It is all good to have another Servant of
Kjarran here. May Kjarran guide your blades. -- Noachian, mgr. Jaguar Warriors

Carny -- May your journey to the great carnival conclave be a safe one. We eagerly
await your amazings. -- Noachian

Crimson Strategist -- May the blessings of Kjarran shine brightly upon the Crimson
Vengeance. The Jaguar Warriors are always ready to fight the enemies of the One True
God. -- Noachian

Micawber -- Don't worry, something will turn up for you. -- Premiere

Jam Handy -- How dare you drag that fight out so long? -- The Reviewer

Crimson Kazoodles! -- Yi-doggies! -- Wild West

Aha! I'm out of here, finally! -- Premiere

All -- Premiere leaves us with a wit of five--I didn't think he'd ever manage the
skills to graduate, frankly. But graduate he did, and he's now headed for a deserved
obscurity. -- Jorja
P.S. If anyone wants to know the whole gruesome story: 9 14 13 5 17 5 21 WS. He's
got an expert in attack and an advanced expert in parry and favors mod/very low,
battle axe.

All you warriors who have been challenging me, I give you the blackberry. Er,
raspberry, right. I'm outta here, and you're not! -- Premiere, rubbing it in

Syzygy -- It depends on what the toothpick has been carved into, surely? -- Wild West

Fellow Karnhorns -- It is the dream of every red-blooded, right-thinking Karnhorn to
conquer our enemies and establish our Empire as preeminent in Alastari. But harsh
reality demands patience. We are, unfortunately, a distant third in military might
behind the Empires of the Andorians and Delarquans. Any attempt to expand our Empire
into the Free Blades region will be viewed as a threat by the powers and result in our
annihilation! We must exercise patience and bide our time. Relations between our
rivals cannot remain peaceful forever. When that happens, Kjarran will guide our
swords! Do not make the mistake of following hotheads like Fist of Kjarran. Wait.
Our time will come. -- Voice of Reason

All -- The Carnival is off to the great Carnival Conclave. Will return soon as
possible. -- Pitch Man

Premier -- Congrats on Isle invite. -- Carny

Premier -- Don't leave. Who will help us defend the Karnhorn Empire? -- Python
Charmer

Igor -- Will try to give you a shot at DM. -- Hotte Korn

All -- Who was seen climbing the palace walls? Does he use the name Older Bud now?
Karnhorns beware! -- Inquiring Mind

Sundance -- Good thing you were using that big piece of wood instead of some steel,
else I'd have been in serious trouble.... Nicely done. -- Lady Lila

Torgo -- Couldn't keep it up, eh, ol' boy.... -- Sir Bluebell

Crimson Quicken -- Crimson Quickly. -- Sir Smash

Pip -- That was some hatchet job.... -- Lovelace

Amok -- Ah yes. Victory at last! After two sound beatings at your hands, my team
needed that!

Crimson Beast -- A lucky style match up for me. Although, I must admit, beasts are
more than slightly disconcerting to me. -- Schism

Trash Quam -- With those learns, you owe me, friend! -- Syzygy

Gamera -- Executioner-style?!? That's a first for me! A particularly gruesome attack
to land on one's head! Fortunately, the second merely clipped you in the
hindquarters. Good thing; Rex CERTAINLY doesn't need Crow on his case again. He gets
DREADFULLY ornery when one of his guys gets bumped off, however inadvertently. A
cantankerous old cuss, to say the least! ;) -- Igor

All -- Please ignore Igor's faulty classification as a "basher." He's really a very
confused "aimed blow." -- Rex

Bluebell -- Well, I got lucky with Givoco and, since you're really a Givoco in fop's
clothing, I think I'll give you a shot. I will almost surely lose, but I figure Lord
Z would enjoy seeing me get scummed, so I figure what the hell. -- The Fool

Sir Smash -- Well, FORMALLY I am known as the Fool. In private circles, however, I go
by the handle "the Goof." I have no idea why. -- The Fool

Premier -- Cracked me? ME? Crazy Igor, the ORIGINAL cracker? Yeah, well, I threw
that fight. Sure, that's it! I threw it out of a...a...uhmmm...desire for
mediocrity? No, I threw it out of a...hmmmm...ahhh...desire to see you graduate in
style? Uh, yeah, that's it! That's why I did it! To honor YOU! So there!!! --
Crazy Igor

Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.
Cult of the Dragon (339), DM-43

All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
Dragonslayers (636) in Solven (DM 22)

16 October 1999
To anyone starting a new team -- No good sales pitch or gimmicks (yet). If you're
adding a team, please put it in Jurine, DM-61. We only have one unchartered team and
eight teams total. So why come to Jurine? Simply put; WE ARE BEGGING YOU!!! --
Wardancer, mgr. War Party
