                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

A familiar knock sounded at the door. Ryu looked up from her paperwork as the
door flew open and Brunello bounded into Ryu's office. The dwarf's smile was
infectious and Ryu's mood lightened instantly. Brunello had just returned from
Monuntial where the Lapur River Fleet had escorted a convoy of troops and supplies for
the city's defense.
Brunello slapped a leather satchel down on the desk. "The latest dispatches from
HQ," the dwarf announced. "I hope there's good news for you."
"It doesn't seem likely, does it?" Ryu answered with a tone of underlying
bitterness. She flicked through the papers in the satchel until she found the coded
document she was looking for. "How's the situation in Monuntial?" she asked absently
as she popped open a secret compartment in her desk and retrieved a codebook.
"No sign of Inzolas yet, or at least when I left there wasn't. A Karnhorn naval
squadron arrived the other day to help in the defense. The Karnhorn commander and
Lord Quetzal seem to spend most of their time arguing about who's in charge."
Quetzal, the political leader of Monuntial, was a strong willed man and Karnhorn
military officers were not exactly known for their diplomatic skills. Some amount of
conflict was inevitable.
"How's your new career going as a river captain? Have you gotten over your boat
phobia?" asked Ryu as she began decoding the dispatch.
Brunello gestured with his palms outstretched. "It seems to go all right if I
don't look at the water. I'll get used to it eventually. At least on the river I can
see dry land on either side of me."
Actually, Brunello was beginning to enjoy sailing. His ship, like the other four
blessed by Ruhor, fairly flew through the water with a speed and steadiness that could
only have been magically induced.
Conversation was temporarily suspended as Ryu took a few minutes to decode her
orders. Her expression darkened. Finally, Ryu crumpled the paper into a ball and
threw it against the wall in frustration. "Damn it, Brunello! It's as if I don't
exist to them. There's an invasion on its way and they're ordering me to sit on my
hands in Lapur until I rot!"
"Maybe they figure there are vital interests at stake here," ventured the dwarf
hopefully.
"Their only vital interest is in keeping me out of their way. Since the Nar
scandal broke, they've had their doubts about my loyalty. I don't know how to
convince them otherwise." Nar had been the head of the Aljafir branch of Karnhorn
Intelligence. He was Ryu's mentor, boss and friend. Ryu had been his top agent. Nar
had set Ryu up as an arena manager in Lapur as a cover for investigating the case of
the Lapur Crystal. That case had ended months ago and Ryu had expected a new
assignment. But in the meantime, Nar had come under suspicion of treason and had gone
into hiding. The loyalty of those agents who were under Nar was called into question.
Ryu received no new assignment. "I'm sure Nar is following some kind of plan. But
why didn't he come to me for help?"
"He kept you out of it because he wants to keep you safe," suggested Brunello.
"I'm not so sure I am safe. Remember that winged horror that attacked
Scarlatti's wife, Marguiba? Marguiba and I aren't that different in looks...both
about the same age, long black hair. I can't help thinking that the thing was
summoned to kill me but got confused by the similarity and went after her instead.
Maybe intelligence has decided I'm a liability."
Brunello frowned. "What do you intend to do?"
"I don't know for sure whether they're trying to kill me. If I leave town I'll
be disobeying orders. What can I do but stay here in Lapur and keep up my guard?
It's funny how things have changed in only a year. The only people I trust now are
Lapurian...present company excepted, of course."
"Exception noted," smiled the dwarf. "Now that I'm a Lapurian Lord Protector and
Captain in the Lapur River Fleet, I sometimes feel like I've become a Lapurian myself.
If you like, I'll resign my commission with the fleet and stay with you as a
bodyguard."
"Thanks, but there's no need. I am surrounded by a stable of gladiators, you may
recall. What I really need are servants to do the cooking and housework since the
slaves have been freed."
     "You freed the slaves?"
"I had no choice. That was the first law the new Warden's Council passed.
Slavery is now outlawed in Lapur. Maybe I can hire some of them back, but right now
they're all out celebrating."
"You don't seem too broken up about it. The Ryu I knew a year ago would have
been lost without slaves. Don't tell me you're becoming a republican?"
"I don't think I'd go that far. It would be blasphemous to even bring up the
idea of democracy in the Empire. But in a small trading city like Lapur, maybe it's
got a chance."
"I guess we've all changed. For the better, I hope." The dwarf's expression
grew serious. "Listen, Ryu. I picked up some information from Karnhorn sailors in
Monuntial. They told me that a navy ship deserted from Zuwayza Harbor, heading east.
There was a rumor that Nar was aboard. The description of one of his accomplices
sounded a lot like Crow, and another matched...."
"Jack Wolfspider," concluded Ryu with sudden certainty. "I should have known
they'd wind up together in whatever Nar's got planned. I pray that Kjarran keeps them
all safe."

In the general vicinity of Monuntial:

The ships drew nearer with dreamlike slowness. Standley thought that odd,
considering the strength of the wind, at least, its strength there on the lighthouse
tower. Of course, with all the islands and shoals that turned the western approach to
Monuntial into an obstacle course, maybe it wasn't so unusual as all that.... Slowly,
but without running aground or getting into any of a dozen other mishaps that were
common in those waters. They must have at least one skilled pilot who knew this
approach. Well, it wasn't his business to figure out that; his business was to keep
an eye on the ships and report what he saw.
Starting at one edge of the loosely grouped fleet, he began to examine them ship
by ship, making mental notes of what he saw. There was a group of ships on his right,
meaning closest to shore as they approached, which had white sails and red-and-black
flags. The next group had red sails and blue-and-white banners. Then a motley group
with sails of most any color and no flags that he could see, and another group of red
sails and blue-and-white banners. Did that mean ships from different ports, or
belonging to different fleets? Counting them was impossible; he could only guess at
the numbers: sixty, he thought. That was more than he, for one, had expected.
Watching the slow approach of the invaders, he began to calculate how many
fighting men might be landed from each, and where they would come to shore. Somewhere
here on the point, he decided finally. If they'd meant to come straight into
Monuntial harbor, the would have taken the northern approach to the mouth of the
Duskblood instead of this eastern one. And as for how many men--too many. It seemed
unlikely that there would be as few as ten warriors per ship, but even that would mean
six hundred men!
He wished Socar would get back. With reinforcements.

East of the Charter Cities:

The two Moryan armies had met and merged and now were camped for a breather while
their leaders studied maps. Staring at the leaders, with their silks and their
chariots and their big tents that probably had who-knew-what luxuries inside, some of
the rank and file muttered angrily, but nobody went beyond a quiet complaint among
friends.
"After all," as a sergeant by the name of Hurdogar pointed out," the big shots
have to do all the planning, make the decisions, and so on, and most of them worked
their way up to the office of general and all its perks, anyway." If the last was not
true in most cases, well, nobody was going to make an issue of that.
"And we'll get our chance," an unmounted spear carrier stated with satisfaction.
"Why, I heard that when we take this Carloi place, we'll all be made into dukes at the
least, with silk beds and four beautiful girls apiece!"
"Hold your chatter, Parlo!" Sergeant Hurdogar roared. "That's all nonsense!"
Turning on the other men around, he repeated, "Nonsense, I tell you!"
"Yeah," another spear carrier put in, "we couldn't all be dukes. Some of us'll
be counts or barons or other stuff."
Leaving the sergeant trying to restore some kind of perspective and reasonable
expectation to his men, the gladiators went into a huddle off to one side. Stumpy Joe
and Meat of Khalani, and Redfox of Dullens, who had marched out with one of the Moryan
armies, were joined by Claudius and Don Johnson of Morya and Lead Lambaster of Lapur,
who had ridden with the other.
"Anybody got an idea what's coming off here?" Meat asked. "Where we're going,
and why the two armies, and all?"
"What I heard--I don't swear it's true, mind you," Claudius said, "is that we're
supposed to go to someplace called Carloi and help defend it against Inzolas."
"I never heard of this Carloi place," Stumpy Joe put in. "That means it's not in
Alastari, right? At least, not close to Khalani and all."
"It's way to the east," Redfox said. "I've never been there, but I've heard of
it. On the coast--one of the Ferencian city-states."
"Well, it strikes me as kind of stupid, sending all the Moryan army--"
"More like half," Claudius interrupted, "even counting both groups together."
"Still, it's fair to middling stupid to send us off into the east when there's an
invasion coming close at hand," Lead Lambaster argued. "It strikes me that there's
something fishy about this."
"Sure is," John Donson said dryly. He lifted one of the journey-cakes the troops
had been issued, which was made of dried fish, among other things. The stuff didn't
taste bad, but it got boring really fast.
"Very funny," Lambaster said in a flat voice. He started to say more, then saw,
as Donson had, that one of the officers was passing their group; if the man was keen
of hearing, he might have heard the comment. The Lapurian gladiator studied the
passing man carefully; the man was a Moryan Knight with a captain's plume on his
helmet and the device of scarlet hawk clutching an arrow embroidered on his surcoat.
Following the Lambaster's gaze, Claudius said, "Sir Tivarius Kiyle, the
Equestor's nephew."
"Ambitious," Donson added, "and with a twisty mind that slides away from points
of honor. I wouldn't trust him farther than I could throw him by his plume."
Switching his gaze to the group of leaders around the silken tent, he added, "And if I
was General Norvendian, I wouldn't even trust him that far."

Dullens:

Councilor Fekhdelgei had found it easy to get Lord Protector Madbull alone,
impossible to talk any kind of sense to him. The man was worse than useless as a
conspirator, because he was, quite frankly, not sane. He might be induced to
assassinate Jehrin Kiyle, but not to keep quiet about it afterwards. Reluctantly, the
Councilor dismissed the idea of using Madbull for that task and turned his mind to
searching for other possibilities.

Khalani:

The Vehal Yssirian Allaya, ruler of Khalani, collected the attention of the
managers with a glance and then began to talk. "You have all heard the rumors of an
invasion," she said. "If you have any doubts, I will tell you here and now, the
invasion is a real threat. True, Khalani is not on the coast--by forty miles. Anyone
who thinks the invaders, if they make a successful landing, will hesitate to come this
far--" She shrugged. "Well, any such person is blind or an idiot."
"The Kiyles of Dullens and Morya appear to believe that they won't be menaced,"
Uncle Wolf said. He was a newcomer to Khalani but had been managing teams in Dullens
for some time.
"We won't argue about the danger," Senchin of Urban Mystics said. "What do you
want us to do to help?"
"It will take another two weeks to complete the mobilization of the army of
Khalani," the Vehal said. "This may be too long. I want scouts and guerilla parties
to locate and delay invaders who get past the coast. If some of you will join the
coastal defenses--at Monuntial, Zarens, and Chimlevtal--that, too, will help."
"Chimlevtal's not a Charter City," Uncle Sam of All American pointed out.
"Neither is Zarens, although they've petitioned for admission," the Vehal
answered crisply. "But I am convinced that if we don't stand together, we will fall
one by one."

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Let's set the record straight right now. I am the best of the triumvirate. Iron
Incinerator was hot! (and good) Zinc Zapper was electric! (and real good) But I am
"nailing them to the wall," and am very, very good. I say this not to brag, (At least
not TOO much.) but to set Lapurian record straight.
I had a heck of a fight with Gorbodue! He's really a fine one! I earned my
nickel, so to speak. (That is, if we really knew what a nickel was.) It looks like my
next quarter (fights are more valuable when you sit on this throne) will have to be
earned against the vet Kurohana, who is formidable, especially after that kill of the
Lady Grace. (Bless her soul! She wasn't a cyborg, but we liked her! We have long
admired her manager for his integrity, his technical ability, his helpfulness to
rookies and his winning ability.) Or I could draw Vir IV of The Embassy, who has
given me one of my very few losses. It won't be easy, but I wasn't named Nickel
Nailer for nothin'!
I think we have some neat warrior names here in Lapur. Let me tell you about
some of my favorites:

Sue Nami--Cute; Force of Nature's best "play on words."
Aomori--Doesn't that sound loving for a Black Samurai?
Serenity--Lulls you to sleep, and you find yourself counted out!
Gorboduc--Just has that "I'm better than you" ring.
Sextus -- Sort of reminds me of a horsy romp in the hay!
     Ilya--Short, sweet, formidable.
Monkey Manager--Is Soultaker talking about himself or Duane the Dog?

Okay, enough of that! Well, except my FAVORITE name is Snide Clemens, so cool!
Time to run, but let me say this; you may not be able to handle me, but you all can
certainly handle those "mail-in-freaks." Bring us home some Lapurian TV's! Go get
'em!

                                             Nickel Nailer
(One of the best and nicest borgs!
                                         Must be the nickel?)

                                      SPY REPORT

Good day, in LAPUR a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor. So
bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. It seems the training can make the
difference, as DEEP 13 is pushed out of top team by METAL MINCERS, who came from 3rd
with a 4-0-0 this turn. EQUESTORS stable has parlayed this turn's 2-3-0 into a 3
space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 7th place. Good work, guys! The
METAL MINCERS guild has had a 4-0-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future.
You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, SEXTUS fought DUSTY
STORM and gained 22 points and contributed to EQUESTORS' 2-3-0. DUSTY STORM has lost
to SEXTUS, falling 13 points, while helping make FORCE OF NATURE a 1-4-0 turn. The
attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed, and NICKEL NAILER remains LAPUR's
top warrior for another turn. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top
team makes their losing fighters do dishes at The Burning Tree until they win.
Maybe?
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. METAL MINCERS has cause to stand tall, as they were LAPUR's
most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And avoiding METAL
MINCERS more than any other team we find SUPERIOR FORCES 2H. LAPUR, are we going to
accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well, sports fans, take notice that KUROHANA
from BLACK SAMURAI was LAPUR's most challenged warrior this turn. In a brave
attempt, SUE NAMI from FORCE OF NATURE challenged up 19 points to fight CHROMIUM
CRUNCHER from the METAL MINCERS stable. SUE NAMI perhaps got hers just desserts,
seeing as she lost to CHROMIUM CRUNCHER and ended up with 6 recognition points.
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. The Burning Tree declares a free
round for SERENITY and all of SUPERIOR FORCES 2H, for having revenged BLACK SAMURAI's
KUROHANA for killing one of their comrades. Is it really true that LAPUR has more
dishwashers per capita that fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. Always good to rest in LAPUR, but never good to wear out my
welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until you see my quill in LAPUR again,
farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

All -- Talon Volksie has finally entered the 90's on the verge of the millenium. I
have e-mail. You may email me at TalonVolksie@aol.com. -- Talon V.

Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.
Cult of the Dragon (339), DM-43

All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
Dragonslayers (636) in Solven (DM 22)

To anyone starting a new team -- No good sales pitch or gimmicks (yet). If you're
adding a team, please put it in Jurine, DM-61. We only have one unchartered team and
eight teams total. So why come to Jurine? Simply put; WE ARE BEGGING YOU!!! --
Wardancer, mgr. War Party
