TEAM SPOTLIGHT
+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Storm Coast #17 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
Barikala:
Barikala was famed for its lighthouse, but actually there was more than one. All
along the coast of the island were towers where beacons could be lit, and five major
lighthouses guiding ships around the island toward the safe entrances to the Urt River
delta. Islanders, and what few gladiators had volunteered, manned these towers with
spyglasses, searching the eastern seas for the first sign of the invading fleet.
There had been three false alarms already, groups of merchant ships traveling together
for safety and making all haste to port.
Shiono, who had the dawn watch at the Storm Point Lighthouse, studied the flecks
of white barely detectable against the brightening sky. They might be gulls, but he
thought it more likely they were sails.... Impossible to count them with any
certainty, but too many to be anything but a fleet. And the only fleet that would be
coming out of the east this year was Inzolas. After one last look, he reached for the
bell-rope that would ring the alarm.
Arvat:
Duke Arrnet stood on wall around his `castle' and stared into the dawn uneasily.
The sea was empty as far as his vision went, but that was no security. For one thing,
there was a light fog over the marshes, and it extended a little way out to sea. He
stamped his feet against the chill of the night just ending and glanced along the
wall. It was the highest point in Arvat and its immediate vicinity, so there were
plenty of lookouts. The gladiator Sisali was the nearest to him. Nice looking wench,
he thought, not a patch on Sugar, of course, but not bad. She didn't look worried
about anything, and Arrnet hoped she had cause for that confidence. He himself was
haunted by the feeling that hostile forces, concealed in some devilish fashion, were
creeping nearer, maybe under the cover of the light fog.
Niatoli:
Crud stared down at the campsite and frowned. He would have cursed, had his
companion been a man, but restrained himself now.
Darskye, peering around his shoulder, was less inhibited. Her comments boiled
down to, "Where are the pirates, I was looking forward to killing them in some
interesting ways."
Crud put his hand over her mouth gently. "Be quiet and stay here for a few
minutes," he directed, attempting to ignore the sharp little teeth that nipped at his
palm.
Her arms slid around his waist and her full breasts pressed against his back.
"Don't take too long," she purred. "Since we have all this privacy...."
"By the gods, wench, there's a time for everything!" Crud exclaimed. He kissed
her quickly and tore himself away. "And this is not the time for that." He walked
down into the deserted camp, moving slowly and carefully and studying everything. It
might be a few years since he left the Shewish Forest and took to gladiating and
living in amongst humans, but it would take longer than that for him to forget how to
read the signs and tracks these campers had left behind. Popular opinion made them
pirates, but they hadn't done anything piratical while camped on the back shore of
Niatoli...and now they'd gone, as mysteriously as they had come. What the hell was
going on here, anyway?
"Left three or four days ago," he said finally. "Packed up everything very
carefully--"
"Same at the camp over on the next cove," Dolan reported, emerging from the
trees.
Crud noted with disapproval that his sister Rachel was trailing along behind the
Dark Arena Shew. Dolan was an okay guy, as far as he, Crud, knew, but Rachel
shouldn't be here. "Something's weird about this," he said, indicating the campsite.
"But I can't put my finger on what."
Snow Wolf appeared along the beach from the other direction, closely followed by
Maple Syrup. When he was close enough to speak without shouting, he said, "The
pirates have gone!"
"Here, too," Crud said. "Any idea why they left?"
The Apachu shrugged. "They didn't leave any signs to tell us about it."
"But look at this!" Maple Syrup said, holding out a bandana on which she
displayed several fruit rinds.
"So they didn't bury their garbage," Darkskye said, shrugging. (All the men
paused to watch the movement of her breasts which resulted from that shrug.) "Did you
expect them to?"
Rachel took the bandana from Maple and stared at it for a minute, turning over
one of the rinds with a twig. "I've never seen fruits like these...."
"Exactly!" Maple said approvingly. "I've seen them, but not often. They come
from the southeast." She waved vaguely out to sea. "Traders bring them sometimes,
but where did the pirates get them?"
"From traders!"
"Unlikely," Snow Wolf said quietly. "Why would traders come here? To the town,
yes, but here? It may be that the pirates have some other base on the coast to the
southeast, or have been dealing in secret with someone from that coast."

In the East:
"We'd better be getting back to Chimlevtal!" High Lord Bosk said. "I don't want
to miss the fight--"
The Sultan looked disturbed. "But surely great heroes such as I can see you must
be would not leave my son Selumid to search alone for the Eye of the East?"
"We came to Serevada for a specific reason," The Icelord said. "Our mission was
to discover the wizard who has been disturbing the Arcanum and persuade him to cease
doing so. This is no light matter and cannot be abandoned."
"It may be that the wizard you seek is the one who stole the Eye," Lord Tiriq
offered.
"Quite likely," the Sultan agreed hopefully.
"Perhaps," The Icelord admitted, "but we must pursue it from the direction of our
original quest. We were given the names of several practitioners of the magical arts
who might have the power to cause the observed disturbance, and we must check each of
them--"
"Slow work," Bosk said, "compared to hunting down someone who killed a dragon!"
"But necessary, my brother," The Icelord reminded him. "And I believe these
people are right, and that we will come to the dragon-killer sooner or later." He
turned to the Sultan's court magician, who had just burst upon them with the news that
Inzolas had sailed for Alastari. "I deduce that you are Master Jersheel," the
Polarian mage said. "Viyaad of Akheel-Aynoor I have met and assessed; he is not the
man we seek. Can you tell me something of Kerfallon of Cirina, Tarsik of Difena,
Mahdsahlat of Giduina, and Sandrovost of Fenarichia? These four have been named to me
as possibly the wizard we seek."
"And myself and Viyaad, I take it," the magician said. "I am indeed Jersheel. I
would judge that either Mahdsahlat or Sandrovost is the man you seek, as they are
engaged in a bitter feud and would do anything at all to achieve an edge over the
other. Kerfallon is also a likely source of trouble, though I have no definite
knowledge of wrong-doing on his part."
"And Tarsik?" The Icelord asked.
"A woman could not have done anything so devastating," the court magician said
impatiently. "How could you think it? Women have, perhaps, some slight knack for the
lighter edges of our Art, but the deeper matters are beyond them."
"What of Sheila Greywand?" Bosk asked curiously.
Seeing that the Serevadan was annoyed by being reminded that there was one
extremely powerful female mage in the world, The Icelord cut in smoothly to say, "The
situation has a masculine feel to it. I dare say you are right that Tarsik of Difena
is not involved." Mentally he made a note to go to Difena--if they had the time--and
make his own judgment of this Tarsik. His friend, the Satrap Harij, had considered
her powerful enough to be involved, and otherwise a good source of information.
Yet another person approached the little pavilion now, and the Serevadans, all
except the Sultan himself, bowed respectfully. This was a young man, scarcely more
than a boy, with delicate features and rich clothing. He was as pretty as a girl,
though The Icelord judged that one he gained the maturity that came from experience,
he would be handsome rather than pretty.
It was no great surprise when he was introduced by Sultan Akferad as, "My son,
Selumid, who will be Sultan after me. To him falls the task of leading great heroes
in the recovery of the Eye of the East.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
"I'm an urban guerilla
I make bombs in my cellar
I'm a derelict dweller
I'm a potential killer
I'm a street fighting dancer
I'm a revolutionary romancer
I'm society's cancer
I'm a two-tone panther"
Hehe, my 15 minutes of fame, I really feel like a rocknroll star: I'm Urban
Guerilla's first Duelmaster! And not the last, that's Vic telling y'all! When I was
just a kid running in the streets (not so long ago!) I only had my wits to help me
survive and see another day of fighting, look at me now, I also have the biggest maul
I can lift! Hoody hoo!!
Absolute Zero, thank you for fighting me when Vampire ran and hid in his grave.
Commodore 64 & Ohm's Lawyer: congrats on graduation, the arena might get duller
without you but somehow I'm glad to see you go! As for you Vampire, I'm TV
challenging you and I really hope you show up this time.
Well, that's about it. You guys need to go back practicing while I relax on the big
chair. See you all in 30 (I hope!).
Kerb Crawler
Last but not least, least but not last: mega special thanx to the barbarian with the
yellow t-shirt. Pictland rules!!!!
SPY REPORT
The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon CHIMLEVTAL,
for I, Novgorodny Vir, have returned! He who laughs last didn't get the joke.
Speaking of laughing at jokes, observe DARQUE FORCES. Last week they got 1-4-0 to
drop by 5! What's a move up by 6 you ask? (alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause
for celebration, according to DARK HEART INC.. Well, RETURN, you can show this to
your parents. But you'll have to do better than 3-2-0 if you want your names in this
space again... Practice pays for ZIGOTO, who pummelled NUMERO UNO, to pocket 20
points. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, TERON GOREFIEND was winsome, after
beating GLANVILLE and seeing him lose 16 points. Duelmaster KERB CRAWLER from URBAN
GUERILLA is going for the gold, as he TV challenged DARK HEART INC.'s VAMPIRE. Ooh,
the excitement! Now I can't insult VAMPIRE, as he has gloriously dueled to the top.
Oh great new Duelmaster!!! (Stop me if I lay it on too thick) Word has it one team
in CHIMLEVTAL is taking speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll
bet it works.
So much to report, so little time! Like the noble eagle soaring amongst the
mountaintops, so stand the warriors of THE STORMBRINGERS, alone and unchallenged.
The warriors of THE STORMBRINGERS found their efforts at combat frustrated as OUCH!
apparently had more important things to do than fight. Everyone is famous for
fifteen minutes, and WILLIAM WALLACE is it right now. Most challenged warrior.
Isn't THE STORMBRINGERS proud! Call 'im brash! Call 'im brassy! Call 'im brave!
Call 'im sassy! SHIRLEY KNOT will face DIABLO, up by 43. Aaaah, just call 'im dead
meat. Like a fly challenging a flyswatter, SHIRLEY KNOT challenged DIABLO, and got
squashed. We sadists got a kick out it! (as did SHIRLEY KNOT) KROGH challenged AL
BEANO! Who says OUCH! are just a bunch of wimps! KROGH of OUCH! kept his wits as he
beat AL BEANO.
Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after
life! Those who owe COMMODORE 64 of MILITARY MAYHEM money and had written him off,
take note: he'S BACK FROM THE DARK ARENA!!! AND he'S MAD!!! MOUNTAIN TROLL in the
Dark Arena wasn't enough for NEWTON THE NEWT of ORCS HATE PHYSICS. Maybe that
certain serving girl(?) at The Mourngrym Inn and Tavern will be! Sober up, young
warriors, and take note of TIBERIUS' fate! 21 GUN SALUTE of NUMBERS GAME handily did
him in. Experience counts for something on CHIMLEVTAL's sands. Charity is unknown
in CHIMLEVTAL, and rightly so. THE STORMBRINGERS exacted their revenge against
DARQUE FORCES. Never one to advocate diplomacy and restraint, I was pleased to see
EASTERN HORDE retaliate against DARQUE FORCES in bloodfeud! Ask not for whom the
sword slashes; it slashes for thee.
All good things must come to an end. Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards
fat! Like a mixed metaphor, and an overtaxed simile, I now bid CHIMLEVTAL farewell--
Novgorodny Vir

Hey rookie managers -- Stormcrowe (45) currently has only one unchartered team so
those awards are practically being given away! If you think that ;your newbies have
the stones to face the likes of MHC & Hearts of Oak, Dark Overlord & Descendents of
Darkness, the Fuhrer & Aryan Assassins, Seamus & Irish Marauders, GraveDiggers and
many other hardcore teams and managers then by all means bring them on over. This
invite is extended to all veteran managers as well, but we figure that you are smart
enough to avoid our killing grounds.

All Mangers (well the ones that care....) -- Swifty McSwift has died. That's right
D-I-E-D. The poor little guy took his own life after a hellish week of DM turns.
That's right, you are all rid of him for good. No more October Rust teams running
around, no more unending ICQ chat invites, no more annoying PA's. He had two last
wishes: First, Chance takes over Troop 709 and second he had some choice words for
choice people.
Chance -- Rock on, bro.
Crow -- You win.
Nithril/Lerch -- Thanks for being pals.
Manager/Soultaker/UC -- Thanks for all the help you gave me.
R/RR -- Thanks for being such cool guys.
Troop 709 -- Live on, kill often.
DOOMcorps -- BITE ME!!!
RSI -- Thanks for the fun.
And to anyone else who helped me over the years, I say thank you.
Well that's all. Happy Dueling -- RIP Swifty

The Dawn Always Follows the Night
It can be easily said that the game of Duelmasters has changed greatly over the past
decade or so. Many aspects of the game have changed in recent years: the creation of
Advanced Duelmasters, Primus, regional ADM, Gateway. Modifications to the game have
made it very different since the early days. Some for the good and some not no good.
The Dark Circle has been a major driving force in every aspect of Duelmasters since
very early on. It goes without saying that there is no alliance past or present that
has matched the accomplishments of the Dark Circle. The list of names that have graced
the rolls of the Dark Circle has been a who's who of Duelmasters: Scrag, Neon
Necromancer, Guardian, Papa Bear, mouse, Mr. Animal, Merlin, Sharky, Moriarty, Doc
Steele, Mongo, Boss Rat, Blood Wizard and many more. The alliance has seen many
changes in its time, and now it is time for The Dark Circle to make one last "change".
We have decided to hang up our hats and call and end to this fine alliance. We have
done it all. We can't do any more. The membership of the Dark Circle has done more in
the learning and teaching of the game than any other group before or since. We have
been reviled more than almost any other group since the game's inception, mostly by
those who didn't understand us yet still used what we taught them. We have
accomplished very much indeed, but we, as an alliance, have nothing more to give to
the Duelmasters game or community.
The Dark Circle has officially disbanded and its Wardens are now all independent
managers. With malice towards none and good will towards all, we part company knowing
we have reached the pinnacle of success. We have nothing left to prove. We part as
friends going their separate ways. Think of us as the Beatles of Duelmasters. We did
it right. We did it the way we wanted. We did it in such a way that our
accomplishments are beyond reproach. We part as winners.
Sincerely,
Scrag
Guardian
Merlin
Mongo
Mr. Animal
Papa Bear
