In the East:
"We'd better be getting back to Chimlevtal!" High Lord Bosk said. "I don't want
to miss the fight--"
The Sultan looked disturbed. "But surely great heroes such as I can see you must
be would not leave my son Selumid to search alone for the Eye of the East?"
"We came to Serevada for a specific reason," The Icelord said. "Our mission was
to discover the wizard who has been disturbing the Arcanum and persuade him to cease
doing so. This is no light matter and cannot be abandoned."
"It may be that the wizard you seek is the one who stole the Eye," Lord Tiriq
offered.
"Quite likely," the Sultan agreed hopefully.
"Perhaps," The Icelord admitted, "but we must pursue it from the direction of our
original quest. We were given the names of several practitioners of the magical arts
who might have the power to cause the observed disturbance, and we must check each of
them--"
"Slow work," Bosk said, "compared to hunting down someone who killed a dragon!"
"But necessary, my brother," The Icelord reminded him. "And I believe these
people are right, and that we will come to the dragon-killer sooner or later." He
turned to the Sultan's court magician, who had just burst upon them with the news that
Inzolas had sailed for Alastari. "I deduce that you are Master Jersheel," the
Polarian mage said. "Viyaad of Akheel-Aynoor I have met and assessed; he is not the
man we seek. Can you tell me something of Kerfallon of Cirina, Tarsik of Difena,
Mahdsahlat of Giduina, and Sandrovost of Fenarichia? These four have been named to me
as possibly the wizard we seek."
"And myself and Viyaad, I take it," the magician said. "I am indeed Jersheel. I
would judge that either Mahdsahlat or Sandrovost is the man you seek, as they are
engaged in a bitter feud and would do anything at all to achieve an edge over the
other. Kerfallon is also a likely source of trouble, though I have no definite
knowledge of wrong-doing on his part."
"And Tarsik?" The Icelord asked.
"A woman could not have done anything so devastating," the court magician said
impatiently. "How could you think it? Women have, perhaps, some slight knack for the
lighter edges of our Art, but the deeper matters are beyond them."
"What of Sheila Greywand?" Bosk asked curiously.
Seeing that the Serevadan was annoyed by being reminded that there was one
extremely powerful female mage in the world, The Icelord cut in smoothly to say, "The
situation has a masculine feel to it. I dare say you are right that Tarsik of Difena
is not involved." Mentally he made a note to go to Difena--if they had the time--and
make his own judgment of this Tarsik. His friend, the Satrap Harij, had considered
her powerful enough to be involved, and otherwise a good source of information.
Yet another person approached the little pavilion now, and the Serevadans, all
except the Sultan himself, bowed respectfully. This was a young man, scarcely more
than a boy, with delicate features and rich clothing. He was as pretty as a girl,
though The Icelord judged that once he gained the maturity that came from experience,
he would be handsome rather than pretty.
It was no great surprise when he was introduced by Sultan Akferad as, "My son,
Selumid, who will be Sultan after me. To him falls the task of leading great heroes
in the recovery of the Eye of the East.

Arvat:
With the rising of the sun, the fog melted away from the surface of the Storm
Sea. It revealed twenty ships, alarmingly close to the entrance to Arvat's harbor.
Though each ship had a mast, they weren't trusting to the wind but were coming in
under the propulsion of oars, thirty oars to a vessel manned by warriors in mail
shirts and helms.
Duke Arrnet stared in shock for a long moment. What use his handful of warriors
against six hundred Easterners? Then he drew himself up stiffly. There were many
criticisms that might be leveled against him, but no one had ever said that Arrnet of
Arvat was a coward. "Give the signal to raise the chains across the channel and fix
them in place," he said to Arenamistress Sugar. "Swordsmen to defend the anchor
points as long as they can but not to make martyrs of themselves. Archers here where
they can sweep the waterfront. And everyone remember their lines of retreat and the
rallying points!"
Niatoli:
"This is spooky," Crud said finally, then turned his back on the campsite.
"Strange, but it happened," Snow Wolf agreed. "If we knew the reason--"
"I sent them away." The voice seemed to emerge from the air. A moment later, a
man emerged from the scrubby trees. He was of medium height and slim build and looked
elven, more or less; somehow, he seemed wispy. He was dressed as plainly as any
shepherd on the hills, but there was authority in his manner. "You might call me, er,
Windweaver. I'm the lord of Niatoli," he explained apologetically.
"What lord?" Darkskye demanded. "I never heard that this island had a lord!"
"I do not, er, make a song and dance of it," Windweaver said mildly. "I have no
desire to, er, assess fines against brawlers or investigate the fairness of prices in
the market, or, er, anything of that nature. The, ah, burgesses attend to all that,
and very well, too. But these, er, people--" he waved one slim nad toward the
pirates' campsite, "they were intruders. They added nothing to life on Niatoli. They
were not wanted here. So I, er, sent them away."
"Can you do that to the invaders, if they come here?" Maple Sugar asked eagerly.
"Er, no, probably not. These fellows were, ah, few in number and had no, um,
magician with them." Windweaver looked embarrassed. "They did not, in any case, want
to, ah, stay here. I fear that the invaders will be, er, more difficult. There will
have to be..." he looked revolted, "...violence."
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Greetings warriors!
Well, another week of duels, and I'm still at the top. I was starting to think
it was gonna be an on again, off again kind of thing. Lulu, you fought well, but were
no match for me. I will not challenge this week since you are the only one in range.
If we should still match up, then so the gods will it!

SPY REPORT
Good day, in ARVAT a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor. So
bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. It seems the training can make the
difference, as FISHERMAN'S WHARF is pushed out of top team by CRIMSON DESTINY, who
came from 2nd with a 3-2-0 this turn. The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have
failed, and TOBIAS TIGEREYE remains ARVAT's top warrior for another turn. By the
way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at The
Warty Toad?
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. I also notice that the FISHERMAN'S WHARF stable was the most
avoided team this turn. Come on ARVAT, what are you afraid of? And guess who
avoided FISHERMAN'S WHARF stable the most? Believe it or not, it was THE TEMPLE
GUARD. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that TAMBO JOH from
FISHERMAN'S WHARF was ARVAT's most challenged warrior this turn. MENEMSHA of THE
TEMPLE GUARD had better have a good reason for challenging down 10 points in a
challenge which he lost. I thought MENEMSHA showed great skill and promise when he
was subdued by GODFREY. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? Is it really true that ARVAT has more dishwashers per capita that
fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the
sweetest. Always good to rest in ARVAT, but never good to wear out my welcome. Look
for me in future turns. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to paper-- Alarond
the Scribe

Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.
Cult of the Dragon (339), DM-43
All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
Dragonslayers (636) in Solven (DM 22)
