Dullens:
The three spokesmen who had gone to Khalani argued all the way home, which was
normal. Terencho, who represented some of the merchants and most of the farmers, was
still looking around for somebody to come riding over the horizon and rescue Dullens
for him. He didn't want to fight the Moryans personally and seemed convinced that
they wouldn't stand a chance. Fekhdelgei the Rirorni, representing the herdsmen, and
Mabreschan, who represented most of the merchants, had formed an impromptu alliance
and were trying to persuade their companion that the real answer was to take the
town's funds and hire a couple of good assassins to take out the Moryan intruders,
starting at the top with Jehrin Kiyle, the brother of Morya's Equestor and regent in
Dullens at that time. Terencho wouldn't hear of it. It was wrong, it was lawless, it
would breed more violence. He would never vote funds for such a project.
Fekhde and Mabres exchanged glances. A major dispersal of the town's funds--and
for good assassins, it would have to be a major dispersal--required a unanimous vote.
"We'll think of something," the Rirorni said. "Maybe some of these gladiators...
They're reckless enough, and the gods know the managers aren't happy about Kiyle's new
taxes and his plan to draft them all to defend against the invader. They might not
want as much money as a professional assassin would."
Morya:
The Equestor and his two closest cronies watched the small army march out. When
a small army left Morya, their neighbors twitched uneasily but went back to sleep; a
large army would have created an uproar of alarm. Equestor Valarrian had explained
that at tedious (to him) length. Another small army would march in a few days, taking
a slightly different direction, and third would follow a little later. Out on the
plains to the east, they would come together and be a big army--too late and too far
away for anyone--Lapur, for instance--to react. In less than two weeks, Morya would
have an efficient force poised to "help" Carloi defend itself. He looked forward to
adding the Carlon navy to Morya's military forces--that nit-picker Quetzal up in
Monuntial would be in for a shock. And Lapur, too--when Morya held Monuntial and
could march an army down that road through the forest, and then send its own army up
to meet them, Lapur would be held in the jaws of a vice and cracked open.
"I've got my doubts about these gladiators," Lord Shrovor said suddenly.
"They're competent fighting men," the Equestor said.
"No doubt, although the arena's no place for a free man with any self-respect,"
Lord Sarminthian muttered.
"Self-respect." Valarrian Kiyle smiled coldly. "I am counting on their
deficiencies in such matters as self-respect and honor, my friends. There will be
dirty jobs ahead, jobs which no knight of Morya will like to undertake. I am counting
on gladiators for some of those jobs."
"Risky," Shrovor said uneasily. "Some of them-- Some think for themselves, make
their own judgment on matters they shouldn't meddle with!"
Monuntial:
"Sestegir's brought three ships," Lord Dogesal said. "They've got crews but no
marines."
"Three more ships..." Lord Quetzal muttered, writing quickly. "That brings us up
to thirty-nine for active defense in the first line. That will be enough--I hope--to
cover the navigable approaches to our harbor."
"Not enough marines for thirty-nine ships," Dogesal said. He added dubiously,
"We'll have to draft."
"Tricky," Quetzal said, agreeing with the concerns indicated. "The people won't
like it. But they wouldn't like it if Inzolas just walked in and took over, either--"
"Ventillio would," Dogesal said. "He said so, said he'd ally with Inzolas
against everyone else."
"He may try," Quetzal said grimly, "but he may find it more difficult than he
expects." The ruler of Monuntial dismissed that with a gesture. "We'll have to draft
people to serve as marines, give them a stiffening of gladiators--"
"Not many here in Monuntial these days," the ponderous Dogesal pointed out.
"I know, but we'll hope for the best from them. We won't count on it, though.
I've gotten word from Dullens of volunteers, and I'll be appealing to the other
Charter Cities. After all, we're their first line of defense. And Lord Kinnishan of
Chimlevtal has offered gladiators from his city--"
"Ventillio won't like it."
"Ventillio may go jump into a bog, with my compliments!" Quetzal snapped.
Managers and gladiators of the Charter Cities -- Everyone's recruiting these days! If
you want in on some aspect of the defense (or non-defense) of the area against the
Invader suggested above, let me know. Or diplo Karl, manager of The University in
Khalani (DM 55) or Jack Wolfspider, manager of Cruel But Fair in Lapur (DM 29). To
those of you who have already volunteered, we all offer our thanks; if you don't
appear in the story somewhere soon enough--remind us! Even writers are sometimes (but
only sometimes) fallible and may forget who-all volunteered. -- the Scribe

Dullens:
Fekhdelgei the Rirorni, one of the three Councilors of Dullens, started his
recruiting efforts with the Cardow Hunters. After all, they and their manager, Uncle
Wolf, were Rirorni, too. So they should understand that when there was a wolf
preying on your flock, the only answer was to kill it. Jehrin Kiyle was that wolf,
preying on Dullens, at least in Fekhde's eyes.
"You have been taxed by this Moryan governor we have," Fekhde said, accepting a
seat on the log that lay beside the firepit. The Cardow Hunters had not yet
progressed to the point of having houses and furniture in the manner of more settled
peoples, their establishment being a circle of tents around a central fire, with
horse-lines beyond. "You have seen the announcement whereby he `requests' that your
gladiators step forward to aid Morya in defending Dullens. Aid Morya in defending
Dullens," he repeated, his voice deepening with outrage. "It is more to the point to
defend Dullens against Morya--"
"You could hardly expect Jehrin to recruit openly for such a purpose before he
is ready to break with his brother," Uncle Wolf said mildly. He accepted a tankard
of ale from Whitewing and passed it to his visitor.
The Councilor paused, startled. "Jehrin is going to break with Morya?"
The old manager shrugged. "It seems likely."
After a moment's thought, Fekhde said, "Well, it makes no difference. We will
be rid of him in any case. The simplest way is an assassin--"
"Murder?" Uncle Wolf took up his own tankard and turned it in his hands for a
few moments, then said, "But is it murder, after all, to kill a politician?"
"Whatever you call it," Fekhde said, "it's something that has to be done. No
hope of getting the Town Council to vote funds for an assassin--"
"And not much chance of surprising the victim if you did put it to a vote,"
Uncle Wolf pointed out. "Jehrin sits on the Council meetings, too, you know."
Fekhde dismissed that with a wave of his hand. "It would have been a secret
meeting," he said. "Anyway, it's pointless. Terencho won't agree to it. But if
some gladiator, perhaps one who has already become a Lord Protector, were to attack
Jehrin.... Eh?"
"Someone such as Madbull, I suppose, who is known to have no great regard for
laws and ethics?" the manager asked. "If you want to approach him, go ahead, but
don't expect me to do your dirty work."
*** ***** *** ***** ***
"Nyah nyah nyah!" Wart chanted, dancing away from Madbull and smacking the
infuriated Rirorni on the butt as he charged past. "Nyah nyah nyah, can't catch me!"
Madbull whirled, showing surprising speed for his size, and charged again,
attempting to impale the smaller warrior on his spear. He was roaring incoherently,
his eyes gleaming red with fury.
Warts laughed again and danced sideways, colliding with someone who had just
arrived on the scene, Councilor Terencho.
"The very person I wanted to see," Terencho said with false heartiness. He took
firm hold of Warts' sleeve. "There is a task I would like to-- Ack!"
Madbull cannoned into them, splitting them apart and knocking Terencho down.
With a sigh, Warts picked up a rock and hit Madbull sharply behind the ear before he
could turn to strike. Then he hauled Terencho to his feet, dusted him off quickly,
and dragged him toward the nearest building, which happened to be the Leaping Hart
Inn.
"We gotta get inside before 'Bull wakes up," he said. "At least, if you really
want to talk to me."
Somewhere east of Morya:
"I don't like being in the army," Stumpy Joe muttered. "I think we shoulda
stayed home."
His companion and teammate from Stonehenge in Khalani shushed him quickly.
"Pipe down," Meat hissed (no easy task, in the absence of hissy sounds). "We're
spies, and that means keeping a low profile."
"Well, I don't want to be a spy. Why can't the boss do his own spying?"
Meat looked at his teammate in exasperation, but before he could reply, Redfox
of Dullens, who was riding on the other side of Stumpy Joe, said, "Probably the same
reason mine isn't here--because he can't be in two places at once."
"Right," Meat put in quickly. "The boss said we've got to watch the balance--"
"Uh, you mean, our balance, don't you?" Joe asked, frowning. "But it isn't a
problem. I mean, these are reasonable horses, not bucking or anything--"
"Nope. THE Balance." Seeing both Joe and Redfox looking confused, Meat
shrugged and said, "Hey, I don't make this stuff up, I just follow orders. That's
what the Druid said." He shrugged again. "It's some kind of religion, I guess."
"Well, we've got more important things than religion to think about," Redfox
said. "What do you make of that?" His hand went to his sword automatically.
`That' was another little army about the same size as theirs which was
converging on them from around a line of hills to the south.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
"That's Morya's flag they're flying," Claudius said. "But how come Morya's got
two armies in the field in the same place?"
"It's a set-up," John Donson answered quietly. "Something sneaky's going on
here, and I don't know that I like it."
Monuntial:
Standley and Socar had this turn as lookouts, and the two gladiators were
perched at the top of the lighthouse on the point that extended into the Storm Sea
beyond Monuntial. They took turns sweeping the horizon, a mish-mash of water and
small islands, with a spyglass and tried to avoid tripping on the narrow catwalk. As
Jimi of the Long Trippers had pointed out--he had the watch before theirs--if they
tripped, the only choices were to fall into the lantern and get sliced to ribbons by
the glass, or off the edge and be smashed to ground meat by the rocks at the bottom
of the tower.
Standley, squinting at the sun and gauging its position with respect to an
island off to the west, said, "Only another hour, and then our shift is over. Who's
relieving us?"
"Don't know," Socar muttered absently, studying the eastern horizon. "Somebody
from Talu Shaya, or else-- Standley!" He grabbed his teammate's arm. "Take the
glass and look over there, just to the left of Turtle Island."
Puzzled, Standley did as requested and froze. "Ships..." he said finally.
"Lots of ships."
"The invasion! You stay here, and I'll take the warning." Before Standley
could reply to that, Socar was half climbing, half falling down the ladder. A race
horse, provided by Lord Dogesal who bred them, waited to carry warning of the
invasion, and Socar tightened the cinch and flung himself into the saddle.
Back on the tower, Standley muttered, "I'd rather have gone myself," the
shrugged and resumed his study of the small flecks that were the sails of the
invading fleet. Or...some fleet, anyway.
SPY REPORT
Greetings, Warriors of MONUNTIAL. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to
give you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. THE RED COMPANY?
Who? D-DAY SQUAD is the top team these days, buddies! UNKNIGHTLY KNIGHTS posted a
nice gain, to come in 4th. Everybody loves a winner... Practice pays for DUNKIRK,
who pummelled ODON, to pocket 23 points. SCREWDRIVER certainly had a baffled
expression on his face, after losing to KEY LARGO and losing 11 points in the
process! STORMTROOPER OF DOOM successfully staved off a grab for the roses by FERENC
of GIPSY BRETHREN. Does MONUNTIAL have no one talented enough to dethrone him? Word
has it one team in MONUNTIAL is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed
life!
My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter.
But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! Like a horde of jackals fleeing from
the lion, so did the "warriors" in MONUNTIAL avoid OXYMORONS. The warriors of
OXYMORONS found their efforts at combat frustrated as CAGEY CRETINS apparently had
more important things to do than fight. If challenges were horses, SIR LANCE LITTLE
could open up a fast food joint! SOMEONE challenged LADY RACHEL! Who says THE
BATTLELORDS are just a bunch of wimps! SOMEONE of THE BATTLELORDS kept his wits as
he was overcame by LADY RACHEL.
Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors.
Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have fallen
into an unconscious stupor.
Leave me now, you base fools! As the seasons change, and the creatures of the
wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave this place. Do not despair! I
shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir

Hey rookie managers -- Stormcrowe (45) currently has only one unchartered team so

many other hardcore teams and managers then by all means bring them on over. This
invite is extended to all veteran managers as well, but we figure that you are smart
