TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The nervous chittering of bats hanging from the vaulted ceilings, along with the
leathery rustling of the gargoyles, and other minor demons that inhabited the dark
recesses of the summoning chamber, caused the Aruaki master assassin to freeze and
mentally emit a prayer to Demnat for both protection and success. Ahead of him his
target sat on a velvet cushion suspended in air without apparent support. The only
light in the chamber came from the glowing ink of the floating tome that the small
lithe man was studying. Silently mouthing the words to renew his invisibility spell,
the were-tiger padded toward his unsuspecting victim. "I will be famous throughout
Ghea," the catman thought. "I will be known eternally as the chosen one of Demnat,
the one who killed The Fuhrer!" Slowly, he slid the envenomed blade from its resting
place in his forearm sheath and crept forward.
Talons the size of shortswords, and blacker than the heart of Kjarran's High
Priest, appeared as if by magic from the chest of the would-be killer seconds after
the stygian blackness of the chamber had coagulated into a boar-headed man-like
creature directly behind the werecat. The Shadow Stalker, child of the void, screamed
in triumph. The noise reverberated in the chamber, and the echo completely
overpowered the sound of the Aruaki's breastbone splintering as his quivering heart
was ripped from his chest.
The assassin attempted to scream at, fight with, and run from the demonic
apparition that had appeared as if from nowhere. Instead he mewed, lost control of
his bowels, and died.
*** ***** ***
Never in his most insane imaginings had the werebeast suspected that a creature's
soul could be made to feel the indescribable agonies that he was now being forced to
endure.
His soul, trapped immediately after his death in his own animated body, was
repeatedly assaulted on the spiritual plane by a variety of netherworld creatures
until, gibbering with madness, he spoke the secrets that all others thought had died
with his physical body.
*** ***** ***
The Aryan Assassins were gathered together about the huge twisted cross that
served as a meeting table in their stronghold, Wolfshanze. The atmosphere there was
anything but festive. The recent successes enjoyed by the gladiators paled in the
face of the assassination attempt on their beloved Fuhrer. A blood oath was taken by
all. When those responsible were found, the payment exacted from the bodies, spirits,
and souls of the perpetrators would form the basis for tales used to frighten young
children for a hundred generations!
The Fuhrer walked into the suddenly hushed room. The miasmatic smell of his
clothing and weary step bespoke the trials that the interrogation of the Aruaki had
caused him. It is considered to be impossible to break the pride oath of an Aruaki
member of the Andorian Assassins' Guild, yet he had done it. He had the names of
those responsible for the attempt on his life. Now as the time to plot his revenge!
Now was the time to summon the Dragon of Woe!

Stormcrowe Bay:
The warriors who were going on the rescue mission began to gather before sunset,
in a fish-drying shed on the waterfront. The two ships they would be using were tied
up to the wharf outside the shed.
Lady Jara wrinkled her nose at the smell.
Her companion and teammate, Ice, said, "I know, but think how much worse it would
be if you were in human form."
Jara glanced down at her hands with their greenish-gray tinge and the webbing
between the fingers. "I cast no slur on the Karragit people when I say that I would
give much, bear much--even this stench--to be myself once again."
The younger woman nodded silently. What she didn't say was that maybe the second
transformation would be fatal. Her sister had died.... There was no way to be sure
whether the shape-changing magic had been involved in that death or not. "Who else
from our team is coming?"
"The Klansman may come," Jara said, wrinkling her face with some distaste.
"Although I question whether he is interested in seeing good done and evil punished."
"As long as it does and it is, so what?" Ice noticed the approach of the exotic-
looking Rescue Ranger, Gadget, and smiled. "Are you going to be part of our team?"
she asked.
Gadget nodded shortly. "For so worthy a goal, no effort shall be spared," the
Lord Protector said gravely.
"Pompous twit," The Klansman muttered, coming up behind them. "Let's get this
show on the road."
The Swavant ship-captain, Werfance, came along the beach and hopped onto the
wharf, nodded briefly to the four gladiators, and boarded his ship. The Metallord
Whitesnake soon followed, with his teammate Lord Protector Mustaine. Zipper, another
Rescue Ranger, was with them but evidently not happy about something; he and Mustaine
were ignoring each other pointedly.
Sherkfvent, who had started it all, was the last to show up. He motioned for
everybody involved to come together into the fish-shed and shut the door behind them.
Gadget nodded approvingly. "Take no chances," the Rescue Ranger said. "Sound
travels too easily over water."
"Right, and walls have ears, and so on. We can't make too much of a plan," the
Swavant said, "because we don't know where, exactly, the man we want to rescue is
being held."
"We will doubtless find someone to rescue, wherever we land," Lady Jara observed.
"Doubtless, but securing Thurzarn is essential to the safety of more than him
alone; he has too much information that the Karnhorns could use to locate our
observers."
"Spies, you mean," Klansman said.
"Spies, if that's what you want to call them," Shkerf agreed. "Thurzan was taken
to shore at the village of Valik, which belongs to the Emir Zelvahd. I'm pretty sure
he wasn't kept there, though--most likely, he's been taken to one of the mines up on
the high ground--"
"There are more than one?" Jara asked. "Then, how do we find the correct one?"
"That's one reason we're only taking a small group for this job," the Swavant
said. "We'll have to scout around--spy, if you want to call it that--to locate
Thurzarn. The ships'll land us near enough to Valik and go away, and we'll sneak
around looking in likely places."
"`One reason'," Mustaine quoted. "The others?"
"Well, for one thing, if we landed in force and tried to take anyone away by
force, the Karnhorns would be sure to carry out reprisals, and we aren't ready to deal
with reprisals. Okay?"
"Sensible," Mustaine agreed. "What other plans need we make before leaving?"
"Well...I think we'll have to split up into two groups," Shkerf said slowly.
"Partly because small groups can hide more easily, and partly to search the area as
quickly as possible. There are copper mines up on the slope of the Maanbard, and
there are bog iron mines along the foot. Perhaps...Lady Jara and I, Miss Ice, and
Lord Protector Gadget along the low ground, and you, Lord Protector Mustaine, with
Zipper and The Klansman--and Captain Whitesnake if he wishes to leave his ship--along
the high ground?"
"It'll do," Mustaine decided, and the others nodded agreement.
North Fork:
"I don't know what the gladiators from Veastian are going to do," Corn Field told
his manager. "Some of them were very upset with Dapal's tactics, and some thought he
wasn't going far enough."
Oz the Worried said doubtfully, "There will be trouble. More than just a few
raids. Crystal Visions predicted--"
Corn Field covered his ears. "Don't tell me!" he begged.
"If you insist," Oz the Accommodating said, shrugging, "but just bear in mind to
beware the Ambitious Guard, and," he consulted a note, "Mary Lamb when she wears she
shells and wolf tails. At least, I think that's what she shaid."
"Uh, right. I'll watch out. But, boss, what are we going to do about this?"
"Consult the powerful and defend the northern road," Oz the Brisk stated. "I'm
sure there was something in the prediction about `Shrouding the Northern Lights', too,
and that is totally clear. The danger from Kurukar is greater than that from
Veastian."
"Uh, right. Okay.... Which `powerful' did you have in mind?"
"The Fuhrer," Oz the Decisive said.
"He doesn't mix in politics, boss."
"This isn't politics. There is obviously some kind of dark magic at work in
Kurukar, and who more likely to know about it than an enigmatic mage like the Fuhrer?"
Oz the Insightful said.
Vithicar:
Peter Bond and Tibold went to make their report to the Council of Wizards, but
George Bond sought out the warriors of Suddenly Santa who had originally landed the
supplies in Green Cove. "Everyone in the village was dead!" he reported. "We
couldn't tell how most of them were killed...." He shuddered, remembering some of the
bodies. "Magic, maybe."
"What about the supplies?" Pere Noel asked.
"Well...they were there," the gladiator said. "But we didn't like to touch them,
somehow. Just in case, you know."
"They will have to be examined," the Lord Protector mused, stroking his snowy
mustache. "If they are uncontaminated, we need them, and if some evil is at work, it
must be identified and punished. I had thought to take your teammate Alice to dinner
tonight to celebrate her graduation, but this must take precedence. Will you come
with me?"
"Sure! I bet Alice will, too. She may look like a lady, but she's a gladiator,
you know."

Stormcrowe Bay:
The two fishing boats set sail from Stormcrowe in late morning, sailing eastward
from the island toward the mouth of the bay and the open waters of the Storm Sea
beyond. Several other ships were taking approximately the same course at the same
time, as this was the season when the tasty little fish called zorring could be found
swimming near the surface at night. From now until the onset of the storms, fishers
would be netting them until their ships were full, taking the cargoes back to the
island, and then coming out for more. The reeking pickling vats (located to the north
and well out of Stormcrowe town) had been scrubbed out, and already people were busy
preparing the spiced brine in which the fish would soak all winter.
It was dusk by the time the boats--and the rescue party--reached the beginning of
the narrow strait that connected the bay with the open sea, and ships going through
the strait, whatever the time of day, always kept to the middle of that channel,
because both sides were made dangerous by rocks fallen from the cliffs of the shore.
They traveled more slowly, too, and in silence so that they could listen for the
turbulent slosh of waves around the rocks. Two or three lighthouses would have made
it a lot safer, and the towers in which lights had once burned for that purpose still
stood, but they were no longer in use. Catch the Karnhorns doing something so
neighborly as maintaining lighthouses where their ships didn't sail at night! Shewish
work, the lights had been, and dark three hundred years now, but Shewish stonework was
only slightly less durable than the mountains.
As the first black hump of the Maanbard, the highland forming the south side of
the strait, cut across the evening stars, Werfance let his ship fall behind the line
of fishers and edge southward. Whitesnake's ship kept pace smoothly, though the
lashing of water around the jagged stones grew increasingly loud. The gladiators on
the decks could even see, faintly, the tossing white spray.
"This kind of thing scares me spitless," Ice whispered to her teammate. "I wish
we could have done this while there was still enough light to see clearly!"
"Our captains seem to know what they're doing," Lady Jara said. If she felt a
similar alarm, she hid it well. "And I understand that the Karnhorns keep a close
watch on this coast. A daylight landing would see us all captured, I suspect."
Aljafir:
Mursaltej looked down at the Swavant in disgust. "Flimsy beast," he growled.
"Dispose of the body, Kathvo."
The man-at-arms lifted Szoker's body and stuffed it into a coarse sack, then
lashed the top shut. "Where, lord?"
Mursaltej raised one eyebrow coldly. "What did you say?"
"Uh...." Kathvo flushed and darted a glance to either side. "Uh, dump it in the
swamp, I guess?" When the nobleman didn't answer, he heaved the sack over his
shoulder and slid out of the room quickly. At least the lord wasn't blaming him for
the Swavant's death. Well, he hadn't hit him all that hard, not really. A human
wouldn't have died.
As these and similar thoughts were running through the bravo's head, he left the
kaliv's palace and made a hurried course through the lowest streets of Aljafir,
heading for the southern edge of the city where barred watergates gave access to the
swamplands beyond.
There was nothing unusual in a man wearing Lord Mursaltej's livery going out of
the city at night with a large bundle, and the guards on the watergate let him through
without hesitation. A footpath threaded between a stream and suspiciously smooth
stretch of turf. Kathvo didn't need to test it to know that the smoothness hid a
deadly mire; he'd lived on the edge of the Great Swamp all his life. He could have
heaved the body into the mire and lost it forever, at least, probably--every now and
again, just often enough to upset the nobs, a body would float to the surface. Kathvo
didn't know why, or much care, except that this meant he had to carry his burden
farther out to dispose of it. Not that this Szoker was heavy, bones like birds, most
of the Swavants. Flimsy.
As he plodded along the path, his thoughts left the dead man and returned to a
familiar litany of self-pity. Working for Mursaltej was hard, he was a hard man, and
he didn't accept any kind of excuses or make any allowances. Look at the way the lord
had sent him, Kathvo, a loyal servant, out into the Great Swamp at night! No question
of waiting till daylight when it would be safer to walk this tricky path!
Ah, this was the place he remembered. It looked like it, anyway. The stream had
wandered off somewhere, but there were a couple of trees on his right, and nothing on
the left. That would be another mire. A wide one, and deep, and, he thought, far
enough from the city. He lowered Szoker's body from his shoulder, shifted his grip,
and then heaved it to the left. It landed with a splat, though he couldn't see it in
the pervading murk of mist and darkness. Job done.
He turned and plodded back toward the city.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
As soon as the sack hit the edge of the mire, Szoker began to feel for the mouth
of it. From the way things felt under him, he could tell that he was at the very
edge, maybe partly on semi-firm ground. It wouldn't do to struggle, though--that
would get him sucked in immediately. But if that animal of a guard hadn't tied it too
tightly....
Green Cove, the port nearest Vithicar:
The small band of gladiators paused on the brow of the hill above Green Cove.
The village looked ghostly in the moonlight.
"We buried everybody, all the bodies, you know," Peter Bond whispered. "It
seemed like that was the only thing we could do for them, but at least it was
something we could do. I really hate feeling helpless."
"Don't we all," Pere Noel murmured, "don't we all.... I sense that there is
someone down there now who is alive, someone who is, er, `naughty'--"
"Someone who can answer questions, I hope," Alice Bond said grimly. "Let's go
give him a chance!"
Without any need for discussion--plans for such a contingency had already been
made--the gladiators started down the hill, slipping from shadow to shadow and
watching alertly for the first sight of their quarry.
On the Storm Sea coast near Ebansar, halfway between Malcorn and Zukal:
The ships had nearly reached the shore before the farmer, Jaksho, noticed them.
Although there were occasional raiding ships along this coast, danger was much more
likely to come from inland, and his wary attention had been all for the forest beyond
the road.
"Serimna!" he exclaimed. "Hey, Whitebraid!" He pitched a pebble at his
companion, a former gladiator now busily felling a sapling that had invaded the field.
The gladiator looked up and followed Jaksho's pointing finger. "Serimna save
us!" Whitebraid said. "Jak, take the horse and ride like hell for the city--"
"Which city?"
"Any one, dammit. This is the invasion, and it looks like the main landing! You
have to take a warning--"
"What invasion?"
"Jak, trust me, there's an invasion, and this is it. Go, man!"
SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly STORMCROWE games. CALLISTO caught the eye of many in
the gladiatorial commission as she skillfully bested NAOME and was awarded 24 points
in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, CALLISTO put down NAOME,
causing her to lose 18 points of recognition in the process. Who here was not
present for the title fight this week as LADY JARA boldly challenged QUAIFE in order
to strive for the Duelmasters honors? The city has turned out in honor of LADY JARA,
for with hers arena victory she may now lay claim to the highest position in the
city! No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained their
position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps?
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. STORMCROWE, city of gladiators!
Mighty among the names of thy guilds is EXHALE, INC., a guild shunned and avoided by
many in the weekly duels. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was
that spent the better part of last week avoiding EXHALE, INC.. Indeed it was
DESCENDENTS OF DARK. Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms
the knowledge that many fighters are after ROWLAND. Watch your back! I cannot but
express pride for the fearlessness of THE KLANSMAN who cast caution to the winds and
challenged PRINCE ARUTHA, a fighter 28 points higher. To be sure the battle was a
losing one. But I like to think THE KLANSMAN at least gave PRINCE ARUTHA a run for
his money. Give BAALPHEGOR credit for hers courage. Did you note how she challenged
OXENHAM despite the 26 point difference in their rankings? In the end BAALPHEGOR was
defeated by OXENHAM, a "sharp" reminder that higher recognition is an indication of
greater skill. Still, it was a worthy bout!
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? I must report the passing of BLUE-EYED DEVIL, veteran of many
duels. 5-5-0 final record His was not illustrious--but death plays no favorites.
Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears arms. One thing is sure, better a
dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
The girls are as pretty in STORMCROWE as ever I remembered them....and the
fighters as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! More than a sharp eye must I
keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari
await me! Till we meet again, remember: a turtle walks slow, hides head in a shell,
and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its prey.-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Blue-Eyed Devil -- What a delightful pleasure to meet you, Devil! [evil grin] -- Dove
Quaife -- You have an excellent counterattack. I look forward to meeting you again.
-- Prince Arutha
Fuhrer -- I look forward to your spotlight. -- Dark Overlord
Seamus -- Don't hide. You're just going to make things worse than they already are,
if that's possible. Besides, it's so cliche. [dark laughter] -- Dark Overlord
All -- Has anyone seen POOR Seamus? He seems to have misplaced himself. By accident,
I'm sure. [evil grin] -- Dark Overlord
Grave Digger -- That is certainly the proper way to avenge a bloodfeud. To think that
you not only survived 8 blows (5 to the head) but came back and killed me with 2 after
desperation; it is obvious where your strengths lie. I will be avenged. -- Schwein
Toten (from the grave)

(Lefty, 3 WT statements, Quick & Active, VERY FRAIL,
Incredibly Quick & Elusive, Did Good Damage)
"It's better to BURN OUT than FADE AWAY..."
Shorsha -- That was rather anti-climactic. Perhaps next time you should consider
putting up a defense. :) -- Athena's Child
Callisto -- You may have a point about my name change, I should have gone with "Hunk-
E." :) It seems that I can't even avoid certain slashers! -- Steel Rain
Arioch -- I demand a rematch! I would have vanquished you, but for the inferior
blade. -- Ice
Rowland -- Revenge is sweet. Too bad you weren't still Duelmaster. -- Lady Jara
Callisto -- Damn good fight. Now I know why the Dark Overlord went to so much trouble
to get you back. Rest assured, I will see you bow before me. -- The Klansman
Baalphegor -- Enjoy the new expert, little lady, you earned it. -- The Goth
Baalphegor -- My dear, are you alright? Do you desire me to nurse you back to health?
I am here if you need me. -- Blue-Eyed Devil
Dove -- The outcome of our match didn't surprise me, but the scant skill learns did.
-- Blue-Eyed Devil
Dove -- We are friends; off the sands. -- The Klansman
Dark Overlord -- I believe that Seamus and the Irish Marauders are responsible for a
failed attempt on my life. They believe themselves to be in hiding, but I scried the
cowardly dogs in my crystal. I will let them hide for a moment, then when they once
again rear their misshapen heads in our beloved city, I will aid you in your quest to
crush the life from their yellow cowardly hides. -- The Fuhrer
RSI -- The manager for the Aryan Assassins is named The Fuhrer, not The Fuhrer8.
Oops, missed that typo, my apologies. -- Ed.
Flattery -- Don't be foolish. You are not clever enough to win a war of words with
me, nor is your stable strong enough to challenge my killers on the sands. -- The
Fuhrer
All -- What's the deal with the lack of personal ads and stories in Stormcrowe? Pull
your heads out of your drinking steins and put quill to parchment.

All -- Talon Volksie has finally entered the 90's on the verge of the millenium. I
have e-mail. You may email me at TalonVolksie@aol.com. -- Talon V.
Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.
Cult of the Dragon (339), DM-43
All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
Dragonslayers (636) in Solven (DM 22)

To anyone starting a new team -- No good sales pitch or gimmicks (yet). If you're
adding a team, please put it in Jurine, DM-61. We only have one unchartered team and
eight teams total. So why come to Jurine? Simply put; WE ARE BEGGING YOU!!! --
