Tsaumarn, the fortress:
Ultraist and Saureza ran down a hallway, empty as every corridor and room had
been so far. The manager was profoundly uneasy. This vacancy in an occupied and
defended fortress was unnatural, and the unnatural, more often than not, was a trap.
They came to a cross-corridor and paused. Saureza, he saw, was not so calm as she
appeared; her face was drawn tight and there was sweat on her forehead.
But she was steady and not ready to run. "The entrance to the dungeons is that
way," she said quietly, pointing left. "No matter how many men Barkab has drawn off
to the yard, there will be guards there. Our only hope will be to kill them as soon
as we see them."
"Suits me," the manager said. Then he cocked his head to one side, his more
acute hearing having picked up sounds Saureza missed. "Someone's coming up from there
now."
She drew her sword and half-crouched in the shadow of a buttress. "Then the
killing begins now."
The heavy, iron-bound door at the end of the cross-corridor swung outward. Armed
men came through it, then three prisoners in chains--Ultraist recognized his ally Doc
LeMa$e, and Gryzash of Sibikhas, whom he had seen twice in that city, but the third
man, a Rirorni, was unknown to him. Behind them came more armed guards and a man in
the robe of a magician of some sort. All were alert for trouble from the prisoners
but did not look elsewhere. They were moving along that hall quickly, headed for
another door like the one they'd left, which Saureza whispered led to the highest
tower of the fortress.
"We attack when the magician is directly in front of us," Ultraist said. He laid
down his blade, removed the more confining parts of his clothing, and began the shape-
change.
Saureza jumped a little. Whatever she had expected from the tall Alastarian, it
had not been this. But she swallowed once and picked up his sword in her off hand;
she was big enough herself to wield it.
In mid-change, Ultraist discovered that the very stones of the fortress were
soaked in magic, and that this latent enchantment interfered with his action. The
shift in form had never been so agonizingly slow before. The party from the dungeons
was close, they would have to attack soon or give it up-- He set his teeth, though
whether they were human teeth or a lion's fangs at that moment he couldn't have said,
and bent his formidable will to the task.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
This is last turn's Duelmaster's column, misfiled in Rocanis. -- Ed.
Tamea Soulkeeper, well fought! Thanks for the skills!

Duelmaster of Delarq Tor
SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly DELARQ TOR games. Warriors--remember that glory waits
always around the corner! Witness how this week CRUSADE went 3-1-0 to move up 4 in
the rankings. Did only my eyes note the 3-0-0 record which BLADES OF DECAY managed
to post this round? I don't doubt that such a record will draw challengers! ZENIA
caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as she skillfully bested GWYN
FIREDANCER and was awarded 21 points in recognition. In one of the week's more
notable duels, ZENIA put down GWYN FIREDANCER, causing her to lose 18 points of
recognition in the process. Who here was not present for the title fight this week
as TAMEA SOULKEEPER boldly challenged LYNN in order to strive for the Duelmasters
honors? Although TAMEA SOULKEEPER made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to
topple the reign of victorious LYNN. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the
top team has gained their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps?
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. I saw one fighter that warriors
avoided when this week's challenge seeking began. BATTLE SLUGS is feared. This much
I can say. Apparently the stalwarts of MYTHICAL are catching the bulk of jests down
at the challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Loose talk at the
arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are
after MASQUEING TAPE. Watch your back! Give TEMPLAR credit for his courage. Did
you note how he challenged ZANE despite the 30 point difference in their rankings? 1
points of newly earned recognition and a dose of my admiration is what TEMPLAR must
now weigh against the defeat which resulted. I can not but mention with disdain the
name of SUPERIOR who this week posted a challenge to a warrior a full 9 points below
in the rankings. I thought SUPERIOR showed great skill and promise when he defeated
SLUG BUG. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. Some say a warrior is judged by the way
he bears arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off
city calling to me. I must away! Till we meet again, remember: a turtle walks
slow, hides head in a shell, and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its prey.--

Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.
Cult of the Dragon (339), DM-43
All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
Dragonslayers (636) in Solven (DM 22)
16 October 1999
To anyone starting a new team -- No good sales pitch or gimmicks (yet). If you're
adding a team, please put it in Jurine, DM-61. We only have one unchartered team and
eight teams total. So why come to Jurine? Simply put; WE ARE BEGGING YOU!!! --
Wardancer, mgr. War Party
23 October 1999
All -- Noblish Island (93) has a number of new teams who are looking to graduate to
other arenas in the next few turns. Now is the time to sing your arena's praises,
number of teams, quality of competition, and whether Debbie T. frequently visits
(wink) are the questions most asked by our managers. We hope to hear from you. -- The
Shadowlord, Sacco's Shadows (93)
Hi everyone, this is Shadow. I hope this finds you all well. I have missed most of
you. <smile> I don't know if or when, if ever, I will come back to the game but RSI
has notified me (by negative account balance) that all the teams and warriors I sold
were not paid for or payments were not correctly made to my account. I would like to
settle these matter please. For those that did pay I would like to buy back any and
all the teams and warriors I sold and compensate accordingly. Thanks so much, my
