Harbormaster Torquinz grumbled as he climbed down the stairs. He was a hard
sleeper and hated being disturbed. Besides the usual night security people, there
were four unfamiliar individuals in his office. He gestured to his assistant. "These
them?" he asked and received a nod of assent. The Harbormaster appraised them, rubbed
the sleep out of his eyes and stared again. They were two Karnhorn men, a woman
dressed as a man and a blue dwarf.
"Okay, what's the story?" asked Torquinz impatiently.
His assistant answered. "There was a fight on the docks. It was these two
(indicating the Karnhorns) against these two (the woman and the dwarf), at the start
anyway. By the end, it was all four of them against the crowd."
"Some of those merchantmen tried to press us into their crews. Of course we had
to fight them. Use your head, man!" boomed the woman.
The Harbormaster turned to his assistant. "Anyone hurt?"
"They'll all live, but a couple of those ships will be setting out shorthanded."
The Harbormaster sighed and threw up his hands. "Is there any reason I should
care what started the fight?"
One of the Karnhorns started to speak but was cut short by the other. "Just a
little professional quarrel that got out of hand," said Fenris Bane. "I'm sorry if we
caused some disruption here. My fellow Lord Protectors and I promise to cause you no
further problems."
The Harbormaster waved his arms dismissively. He wanted no trouble with Lord
Protectors. Besides, he had specifically warned the merchants that the kidnapping of
crewmen would not be tolerated. Maybe they'd learn a lesson from this. "Get out of
here, all of you," he growled.
                          *** *** ***
"Why didn't you let me say anything about Nar being on the ship or Noachian
swimming after it?" asked Ulde Stamer to Fenris when they were on their way back to
town.
"Because I'm not sure who we should trust. Nar was aboard an Imperial Navy ship,
remember. Maybe the Harbormaster is in on it. Come on, we're going to the Holy
Mahsh. We'll give the news to Father Mansardo himself.
                          *** *** ***
Noachian swam a careful circuit around the ship, trusting that the darkness would
conceal him from the lookouts. The craft was a light trireme, built for speed rather
than bulk. The Imperial Navy made use of ships of this type along the trade routes as
they had the capacity to outrun nearly anything. For that reason, they were popularly
known as "pirate chasers." Noachian wondered why this particular ship was anchored
here far out near the mouth of the harbor as opposed to the docks where the rest of
the squadron rested. Sentry duty, perhaps?
He determined that the best location to make his climb would be back near the
rudder where his progress would not be observed from the oarports that studded the
broadsides. He said a quick prayer to Kjarran, then began his ascent. Despite a few
near slips and shaky handholds, Noachian made good progress. Near the upper deck he
came across the name of the vessel painted across the woodwork...Holy Avenger. He
seemed to remember that there had been a story about a ship of that name, but the
details escaped him at the moment.
Noachian grasped the railing and pulled himself up far enough to get a look at
the deck. He frowned when he observed that an unusually strong and alert night watch
patrolled the deck. A desperate plan jelled in Noachian's mind. Aside from the
officers who wore colorful and officious looking uniforms, the crew were largely
shirtless and shoeless, wearing knee-length trousers which seemed to comprise the
crew's on-duty uniform, at least in the summer heat. Noachian had lost his shirt and
kicked off his boots during his long swim from the dock, so it occurred to him that he
was not dressed much differently from the ship's crew. His best chance of non-
detection lay in blending in.
With that resolve, Noachian bounded over the railing and landed nimbly on the
deck. He looked about him and was disheartened to discover that he had been observed
by a ship's officer, a midshipman of not more than sixteen years of age. "Just what
do you think you're doing, sailor?" demanded the youth.
Noachian decided to bluff. "Begging your pardon, sir. I thought it would be all
right to do some exercises. Just trying to stay in shape, sir." He pronounced these
words with difficulty. Noachian was not in the habit of showing deference, especially
to pimply faced teenagers in oversized uniforms.
"One of the new men," grunted the Midshipman. "What was your crime?"
Noachian hesitated, then made the connection. He had heard that naval ships
sometimes took convicts from city jails for replacement crewmen. "Err...theft, sir."
"A pickpocket, eh?" sneered the young officer condescendingly. "Well, my fine
thief, I've caught you red-handed."
"I was not thieving, sir," answered Noachian.
"It was obvious to me that you have defied orders to remain below, and have come
up here to practice your former profession. Do you know the punishment for theft
aboard this ship?" The boy's eyes gleamed with malicious pleasure. Several sailors
of the watch crowded around to back up their officer.
Noachian weighed his options. If he made his move right now, he could vault over
the railing and leave the impudent youth in a groaning heap on the deck in the
bargain. It would be a long swim back, but he could make it. But if he did, he would
fail in his entrusted mission to follow Nar and learn his plans. His indecision
caused him to hesitate a moment. Out of the corner of his eye he caught a glimpse of
a group of officers in command uniforms, just emerging from the lower decks.
Noachian leapt suddenly to the railing and glared at the assemblage on deck. "My
name is Noachian, Lord Protector of Zuwayza and the Empire," he called out in
authoritative tones. "I am acting under the authority of the Holy Alliahr. I have
reason to believe that a suspected traitor by the name of Nar is presently aboard this
ship. I demanded that he be handed over to me to be brought back to Zuwayza for
trial."
The ensuing awkward silence was broken when the man wearing a Captain's uniform
stepped forward. The man's dark Karnhorn features revealed a surprisingly strong
admixture of elven blood. "I am Captain Ljentazh. I welcome you aboard my ship, Lord
Noachian. However, I must refuse your request as there is not a man on this ship whom
I suspect of disloyalty to the Empire, and that includes Inspector Nar. I do not have
time to discuss the matter further. We sail at first light and I must oversee the
preparations. If you desire to sail with us, you will be my honored guest. If not,
we will provide you with a ship's boat if you need one to return to shore. The choice
is yours." With that, the Captain turned and appeared to take no further notice of
Noachian.

Sarebya:

"It's the invasion fleet, I tell you," Turlik said yet again. "More sails than I
could count, with the wind behind them, and headed for the coast just south of here."
"The invaders are not coming here," Cadiz Virkaj snapped. He was the commander
of the Emir of Sarebya's household troops. "If there are any invaders, which is
questionable. And I'll thank you not to go spreading this wild tale of yours and
causing a panic."
     "But, Cadiz, I saw them!"
"Fishing boats," the cadiz said dismissingly. Anything further he might have
said was interrupted by the frantic clamor of the alarm bell in the tower overhead.
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
Cadiz Virkaj assembled his men with commendable speed, posting them at the points
where the harbor defenses could best benefit from their presence. Even the presence
of distracted citizens clogging the streets and shouting to know what the danger was
did not hamper this maneuver, because it was one which had been practiced many times.
Fixed-base catapults which had long since had their aim targeted on the harbor
entrance were uncovered and readied to fire. Messengers were dispatched to all
neighboring towns with word of the first sighting of the enemy fleet.
And then they waited, through a long afternoon when the scattered clouds of the
morning gathered overhead and began fitfully to rain. Occasionally a far-sighted
soldier on one of the heights would glimpse sails behind the curtain of rain, but none
came near enough to fire even the long-range ballistae at.
"They've pulled off to the south," Cadiz Virkaj muttered. He had taken up a
commanding position on the top of the tower which formed the center of the harbor
defense, as was his right and duty. Sarebya, at the mouth of the modest Mirsil River,
was cupped in gentle hills which restricted his view of the coastline to the north and
south, but his position gave him a complete picture of the state of the harbor. "I
knew they didn't mean to land here. They've gone after Zuwayza--"
"Could their navigators be so incompetent?" Turlik asked.
Virkaj shrugged, as though to say that he wasn't answerable for the quality of
Serevadan navigators. He glanced around, then stiffened as black smoke billowed up
behind the hills to the south. "They've bypassed the city!" he gasped. "They're on
the shore to the south!" He turned and plunged down the stairs with reckless haste,
dragging Turlik after him. "Take the Red Lion Company and ride south," he commanded
the younger man. "If they've landed in force, you won't be able to stop them, but
slow them down, kill as many as you can, and hold them to the beach. I must tell the
Emir."

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of KURUKAR! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team FOWL WARRIORS was
unseated this week as HEART OF DARKNESS moved up from 3rd ranking to take the top
spot with a 1-2-0 record for the round. LOM HALF-STRUCK caught the eye of many in
the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested LIVACIOUS LEE and was awarded 26
points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, CALVIN put down
DEVETAKI NOMAN, causing her to lose 19 points of recognition in the process. Who
here was not present for the title fight this week as CREED boldly TV challenged
FRASIER CRANE in order to strive for the Duelmasters honors? The city has turned out
in honor of CREED, for with his arena victory he may now lay claim to the highest
position in the city! Informants "close" to the city champion have told me that he
never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out!
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city KURUKAR. I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when this week's
challenge seeking began. THE WAMPHYRIE is feared. This much I can say. Methinks
more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part of last
week avoiding THE WAMPHYRIE. Indeed it was FOWL WARRIORS. Loose talk at the arena
has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after
GRAZE. Watch your back! I cannot but express pride for the fearlessness of DESHAIN
who cast caution to the winds and challenged FRANKLIN, a fighter 28 points higher.
The HEART OF DARKNESS stable will be up late tonight, for indeed it was DESHAIN who
claimed victory in the contest, ascending 24 in recognition!
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Some guilds are strict but few are as heartless as
HEART OF DARKNESS. Witness, last turn they sent JUBEL, a 2-0-2 fighter, to the Dark
Arena! Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears arms. One thing is sure,
better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a
stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise
are angered by the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

Did Jo-An make a crack about a down-challenge? I don't remember. You should do like
me and ignore her. Down-challenging in Free Blades arenas, so far as I can tell, is a
"roll your own" situation. I wouldn't do it, even if I actually issued a challenge,
but that's just me. Other managers do as seems best to them. If my warriors receive
down-challenges (wish that was a shorter word!), they'll usually comment on it and
then forget about it. My interest is primarily in the role-playing aspects
(admittedly, you don't see much of that here). Maybe we could get a role-playing
interaction going? -- Obscure Source, The Reformers
P.S. Yep, the Fowl Warriors are fiendishly good.

Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.

All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
