They ran. Bat could feel his strength surging back to him as they raced through
the tunnels and out into the winter sunlight. The horse and the mule were there, all
packed, along with a nervous-looking Dirk Cholera. Him, nervous! Maybe even the
Bandit Prince couldn't survive a river of lava. Not that there seemed to be anything
going on, geologically, despite Syr-Davan's statement that the mountain was going to
blow.
Over Bat's protests, Syr-Davan and Nightcap hoisted him up onto Cholera's horse,
and the party of adventurers started down the dry riverbed as quickly as possible.
"Won't the lava follow this channel?" Alix asked. "Shouldn't we get up out of
it?"
Syr-Davan said, "If the lava comes up through Gohar's tunnels, then we'll need to
do that, yes, but I'm hoping we'll have a little warning. In the meantime, this is
the fastest way to travel."
After a few minutes, Bat began to notice a low, almost inaudible grumbling sound.
"Is the earth shaking?" he asked, since it was hard to tell from horseback.
"Yes," Alix told him grimly. "How do you feel?"
"My strength has come back, I think. Why don't we all take turns on this horse?
Maybe we could push ourselves a little harder."
"I've got a better idea," said Dirk Cholera. Walking beside the horse on the
other side from Alix, he suddenly pushed Bat off, and swung up into the saddle
himself.
"Hey!" Bat squawked as he fell onto the redheaded gladiator for the second time
that morning. "Sorry, Alix," he said, with his face three inches from hers.
"It's all right," she said breathlessly. "Glad I could break your fall."
"We've got to stop meeting like this."
"Stop him!" Syr-Davan shouted.
Moonlight lunged, but too late, as the black horse leapt away and she fell to the
dusty ground. The horse and rider galloped down the riverbed and disappeared around a
bend.
"Son of a--" Bat said, helping Alix up.
Rem shrugged. "He did what he had to do, helped heal the earth. Whether we live
or die is nothing to the earth, or to him."
"We're lucky he didn't rob and kill us for good measure," Moonlight added.
"Enough chitchat," Syr-Davan snapped. "Keep moving!"
Now that he was on foot, Bat could definitely feel the earth trembling beneath
his boots. He felt good, though, like he had a new lease on life after nearly being
sucked dry by Gohar. It wasn't until about an hour later that he started to tire a
bit. Still, they were all very fit from their arena training, and continued at the
same fast walk. The mountain trembled, then stopped for a while, then another tremor,
and so on. But the intensity of the tremors was growing, and the quiet intervals were
getting shorter.
"It's like it's in labor," Rem said, when they'd been traveling for two or three
hours.
"Oh?" Alix looked at her curiously. "You mean, there's some kind of magical
earth-baby coming out?"
"Oh, no, I don't think so. Just a whole lot of lava."
"Well," Syr-Davan said dryly, "the time between contractions is about ten
minutes, and I want to be a LOT farther away from here before whatever-it-is comes
out, so let's save our breath for walking."
At that moment there was another, stronger tremor. Ambassador Winston, the well-
dressed mule, brayed loudly, jerked his lead rope out of Moonlight's hand, and ran off
down the riverbed.
"Oh no!" Bat said.
Syr-Davan shook her head. "Don't worry, we'll catch up with him."
"But what if the lava comes? We'll climb to higher ground, but there'll be no
one to lead him to safety."
"If you want to run after him, go ahead."
Bat started off at a jog, pulling ahead of the others. He realized Alix was
jogging along next to him. He gave her a friendly grin, but said nothing. At this
altitude, carrying a pack, he needed all his oxygen for his legs.
The shivering in the ground stopped for a while, and soon they came upon
Ambassador Winston, standing there with his head down.
"He looks thirsty," Bat gasped.
"We all are. We used all of our water on Gohar."
They caught up with the mule and Bat picked up the lead, wrapping it around his
hand a couple of times for security. Alix petted the animal and soothed him as best
she could. However, Bat noticed that the Ambassador was still showing the whites of
his eyes. He said, "Should we wait for the others, or keep moving?"
Alix looked around. In this spot, the riverbanks were steep bluffs on either
side of them. "Let's keep going till we come to an easy way up, just in case. Then
wait."
They moved on down the path, taking it a little bit easy because they'd worn
themselves out and because they wanted the others to catch up.
The ground began to shake again.
Ambassador Winston brayed.
From somewhere behind them up the mountain, came the sound of a huge explosion.

Part Forty-One
Firian gasped and drew the undone halves of her kichai together in an involuntary
reaction of modesty. Destin automatically threw his arms around her as protection and
glanced around in all directions. "What's wrong, Firian?"
"Master Andamnasang! What in the name of Chykarin is he doing here?"
Destin followed the bearing of Firian's astonished stare. In a remote corner
across the expanse of the cauldron floor stood Andamnasang, perfectly still.
Everything else in the cauldron stood perfectly still also, because the halting of
time which had allowed Firian and Destin to express their mutual passion was still
holding all the other occupants of the cauldron in suspended animation. Destin
squinted, trying to see the far away figure more clearly.
Suddenly things started moving. The roar of the furnace resumed. The frantic
milling about by the captive creatures lurched back into motion.
"Hurry!" Yosko yelled from the other side of the valve door.
Destin still couldn't see through the exit passage because of the gray curtain of
magic spanning it. He drew his sword and rallied every particle of his hiu that he
could access. He grasped Firian's wrist with his free hand and thrust his sword into
the dense curtain. The tip of the sword released a flash of silver light as it
touched the magical barrier; then it began pulsing with almost blinding bursts of pure
white light. The mass of the curtain began to waver in concentric circles emanating
from the edge of Destin's weapon. The paladin felt sweat begin to erupt across his
forehead. He increased his concentration and broke across the mental threshold where
extreme effort transmutes into transcendent energy. His body floated through the
curtain, pulling Firian safely with him.
As they moved through the valve door into the antechamber, he turned his head
back for a last glimpse of the cauldron. Monstrous flames rolled like lava flows out
of the furnace portals onto the mazed floor. Amidst the panic-driven frenzy there
only Andamnasang remained in a frozen pose. The corners of Destin's mouth lifted in a
comprehending smile; but they dropped again instantly as Destin saw Andamnasang's
effigy begin to melt and then to fade into a translucent phantom. The tenuously
outlined shape of the Nai Shang Academy's dean shifted during the second in which
Destin blinked.
Now the space the mage's copper likeness had occupied was filled with a dragon.
In fact the dragon filled up quite a bit more area than had the vanished effigy. Its
reptilian frame seemed to overlap space simultaneously taken up by several maze walls
and a dozen doomed creatures. Then fire flashed over everything in the cauldron and
Yosko muscled the door shut while Firian and Destin caught their respective breaths.
"That was incredible!" said Shavida. "I've never really been close to the
cauldron when it's been fired before." She turned her attention to Destin. "Thank
you so much for destroying my misenchanted swords. I truly never intended them to be
used for purposes such as the one for which Pader Wanding stole them."
"You're welcome," muttered Destin. His face reflected a distracted and very
worried expression.
The entire group--Destin, Firian, Shavida, U'me, Lo, Yosko and the troll, holding
the baby--began making their way away from the cauldron and through the complicated
corridors of the academy. Firian stole a couple of fascinated glances at the baby
troll. When the adult caught her at it, she smiled. He smiled back--troll fashion,
with large canines hanging over his lips--and cradled the baby in an exaggerated
manner, like a mime moving. Firian smiled again, taking the troll to be expressing
his love for his offspring and resultant gratitude for their rescue. Within context
his canines looked endearing.
"What are we going to do now?" asked Yosko.
"We're going to thank you for your excellent work, Itannigos, in solving the
murder of Pader Wanding," said Destin.
Yosko's eyebrows shot up in extreme surprise.
Destin continued, "Remember the golem that attacked us, the one you told me
belonged to Triven Andamnasang?"
"Sure."
"Well, it had curious wounds on its hands. Remember, Firian, I pointed them out
to you? Wounds that make sense only if it had handled something with a cutting edge
and had applied a lot of pressure on it so that the edge dug into the palms of its
hands."
Yosko and all the others wrinkled their faces in confusion.
"The golem, not Shavida's sword, was the murder weapon, Yosko. It held one of
the unspelled swords by the tip and shoved it, hilt first, into Wanding's chest. Its
method of killing created the misimpression that an enchanted sword had been used.
So," Destin concluded, "Andamnasang directed the murder of Wanding."
Surprise flooded the faces of the group. "But why would Master Andamnasang want
to kill Wanding?" asked Shavida. "He's more powerful as a mage and Wanding wasn't a
romantic rival or anything."
Firian snickered. "I can't imagine either one of them vying successfully for a
woman's attention." Shavida barked a chuckle in agreement.
"Well, Dean Andamnasang has a certain charm, don't you think?" asked Yosko, who
always tried to think the best of everyone.
"Charm like a snake," Firian replied coldly.
Destin remembered how Andamnasang had forced Firian to sing. Yes, the Dean
definitely had a vindictive side. And a man in his position would have political
agendas, at least within the realm of the academy, and probably beyond. The mage had
knowledge of Wanding's plot to target the Emperor with a spell-bound sword. Was
Andamnasang's motive related to Wanding's assassination fantasy, or was it something
else? Why was his effigy in the cauldron? And why had it seemed to change into a
dragon?
"Andamnasang has some explaining to do," Destin said. "Constables Oudashan and
Marak and I are going to visit him right now. "Firian, Shavida and Yosko, you all can
return to your quarters or go about other business for a while. Since you're all
academicians it would be better not to involve any of you in the actual arrest."
"What about our friends?" Firian asked, nodding toward the trolls.
"Can you safely escort them to the outside?" Destin answered with a question.
"Since they were in the cauldron I assume they're not here by free will and they'd
want to escape."
The adult troll, apparently having become aware that the conversation was about
him, had begun watching Firian and Destin with intense attention. Both of them
noticed and smiled at the troll to reassure him.
"I wish I knew a troll language," Firian lamented. "It would be interesting to
find out what their story is. Maybe there's even something important for us to know."
"Hey, there's a student in the afternoon conjuring class that knows one of the
dialects, I think," said Shavida. "She told me she comes from a village with an
enclave of trolls and she learned some of their language to make commerce easier."
"Great. We can fix him up," said Firian, eyeing the slash wounds crisscrossing
the troll's back, "and help them find their way home." Firian was a naturally
compassionate person, but she also needed something to keep herself busy once Destin
left. She didn't fool herself into thinking there was a chance of them ever meeting
again--magic was part of her world, but miracles were not.
Destin's mind was distracted with similar thoughts as he and the constables
approached Andamnasang's office. Something else in the backof his mind was struggling
to break through also, but he couldn't afford any weakness in his attention right now.
The paladin placed his hand on the hilt of his sword and, with prayers for justice,
petitioned Mantor to assist. The three law enforcement officers knocked on the
unlocked, unhosted door to the dean's office. After a reasonable pause to wait for an
answer that never came, they entered. A deathly silence pervaded the room.
"Nobody's home," said U'me. His kindly yet worldly gray eyes swept the abandoned
quarters, lighting on a huge book laying open upon a reading pedestal. While the
gray-haired officer walked over to investigate, Destin stepped carefully around the
room, picking up several objects in succession to look at them more closely with hopes
that something would provide a clue.
One of the objects was a wood carving of a raven in flight. The artisan had
captured the details of the animal's anatomy in beautiful detail--the complicated
layering of feathers in its wings, the self-confident stance of its body in the air,
the subtle curve of its extended talons.
"It looks like a spell book," U'me said to Destin. The paladin looked up from
the statue and nodded grimly. He felt a wave of frustration wash over him. He was a
warrior, used to fighting with skill at blades and horses, pitting his bravery and
strength against a foe. This parrying with the mind, trying to anticipate and
outmaneuver the warped strategies of a nasty-hearted enemy, was maddening. It was
hard to think like a dirtbag when you weren't one. For a moment Destin's spirit
faltered; he was afraid his purity wasn't a match for pure evil.
He walked over to join U'me at book pedestal. "Any idea what kind of spell?" he
asked.
U'me shook his head "no." "I don't know how to read it. I'm guessing it's a
spell book because it has these characters that look like abstracted shapes. I saw a
spell book many years ago and it had similar icons." As if reading Destin's mind, the
constable added, "I'm sure whatever kind of spell it is, Master Andamnasang is up to
no good with it."
Destin smiled ironically. "If it has wings like a dragon and it breathes fire
like a dragon, it's a dragon," he said, repeating the oft-quoted police work maxim
about criminal behavior. His eyes slid back to the carved raven, widened suddenly
with the shock of realization, and then shot back to the spell book. That something
in the back of his mind had just leaped across into conscious thought.
"Marak and Oudashan, commandeer horses, ride as quickly as your mounts can carry
you to Grand Inspector tel Jehsian and tell him there's going to be an attempt on
Emperor Dian's life at the festival today," Destin said, his voice strained with
urgency. "Tell him the assassin is Triven Andamnasang, who is wanted already in the
murder of Pader Wanding. I'm going to alert Commander tel Lavin. By Mantor's glory,
I hope we're not too late!"
Destin broke into a run as he passed through the door of Andamnasang's office
into the hallway. He yelled back at the stunned constables, "Tell tel Jehsian that
Andamnasang has performed a shape changing spell. He's a dragon, the carved dragon in
the parade."
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Waaaaooowww! Here I am again! Finn, I sure got the jump on you. I hope you're
all right. Looks like I'll be facing Blond Boy this time. That 16-28-2 record
worries me. Seriously. It tells me he has a lot of strength, probably some speed,
and can take damage. Not too smart, probably, but he can get lucky. Me, I'm not the
greatest warrior around, but then, this isn't the biggest arena around, and I guess
everybody gets their turn on the throne. I need one more win, and I don't know how
many political points, to win that trip to Alastari. With Mantor's blessing, maybe
I'll make it.
I hope you all are enjoying the tale of our mission to the Twisted Lands. This
happened last winter, of course, but it's been taking me a long time to write it down.
My memory of what happened is starting to fade, and Alix isn't around to help remind
me. Ah well. We never did find out about that chaos contamination, but it seems to
have gone away on its own.
Until next cycle, may you all fight bravely, and Mantor willing, let no one die.
Bat, Duelmaster of Daiyla Kiv Arena
SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly DAIYLA KIV games. MARY KAY caught the eye of many in
the gladiatorial commission as she skillfully bested NIGHTCAP and was awarded 17
points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, MARY KAY put down
NIGHTCAP, causing him to lose 13 points of recognition in the process. Most watched
of the fights this week, the spotlight was on BLOND BOY as he bore arms against the
challenge of reigning Duelmaster BAT. Although BLOND BOY made a valiant effort, it
did not suffice to topple the reign of victorious BAT. No confirmation, but my
sources claim that the top team has gained their position using magical aids.
Charmed weapons perhaps?
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city DAIYLA KIV. I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when this week's
challenge seeking began. THUNDER CATS is feared. This much I can say. If you
didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed to find any of CORPS last
week. Busy avoiding THUNDER CATS?
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears
arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
The girls are as pretty in DAIYLA KIV as ever I remembered them....and the
fighters as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! Ahh, but I can hear the spires of
a far off city calling to me. I must away! Till next we meet remember: a fool
flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise are angered by the same thing only
once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.
Cult of the Dragon (339), DM-43
All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
Dragonslayers (636) in Solven (DM 22)
16 October 1999
To anyone starting a new team -- No good sales pitch or gimmicks (yet). If you're
adding a team, please put it in Jurine, DM-61. We only have one unchartered team and
eight teams total. So why come to Jurine? Simply put; WE ARE BEGGING YOU!!! --
