"What have you done with Blood Fury?" Zakar demanded. He reached for Riya again,
catching her arm and tightening his fingers until he was sure it was painful. She
didn't cry out, which was a little disappointing. Women were supposed to be soft and
yielding, and her warrior-like control made him want to hit her.
"I have done nothing," Riya said, smiling coldly. "She walked into a trap, like
the stupid tavern slut she is." Zakar shook her a little, and she sighed. "If you
must have the sordid details...she accepted a glass of drugged wine from a man in
Danion's Well. I suppose he had something unusually `kinky' in mind and didn't
realize that she actually enjoys that kind of thing," the Plainswoman said
disdainfully.
     "She's at Danion's Well?"
"Not now," Riya said. "She was carried off--people thought she had drunk herself
into a stupor, I suppose--and I have no idea where she might have been taken."
     "You could have followed--"
"It was nothing to do with me," Riya said coldly. "I have better things to do
with my time than helping sluts preserve their non-existent `virtue'." She twisted
free again. "I told you, I have been Called."
"You said that," Zakar noted, "but you didn't tell me why I should believe you."
"Then don't believe me," Riya said with an indifferent shrug. "But my mission
lies in the West, as I believe yours does--"
"My concern is with the encroachment of Zokharat on matters which are rightly
Dzegarl's concern, here in Simtakka."
Riya laughed. "The picture of you as a knight of any god at all is incredibly
bizarre. And if you are the best Dzegarl can muster, well, He is to be pitied. Have
you not even thought to wonder why the priests of Zokharat think they can do this
`encroaching'?" she asked.
Her tone was mocking, and Zakar again felt the urge to strike her. Again, he
controlled it. Time enough for that when he had learned all she had to tell him.
"Why, then?"
"Because they have received support from the Priest-Kings of Tozimek and
Tzaltizoc. Gold, blood, and spells." Riya's eyes half-closed and a dreamy expression
flitted across her face. "They are prodigal with their power...and they have made
more enemies than Dzegarl."
Zakar frowned. "Why should these `Priest-Kings', whoever they are, aid the
priests of Zokharat?" he demanded.
Riya's golden brows lifted in thinly masked contempt. "I see that you don't even
know the history of your own people. When your Tzaltakans came here, eight hundred
years ago, they were only half, or even less than half, of your race. The others
showed more sense and went into the west and became the nations of Tozimek and
Tzaltizoc."
"There was nothing stupid about coming here!" Zakar snapped, answering her
implied criticism. "This valley is fine land--"
"And you Tzaltakans have been conquered and are a subject race," Riya pointed
out. She seemed to take pleasure in that fact. "In the west, they have become
powerful nations. But that is all history and need not concern us now. What is
important is to cut off this new power at its roots--in the West."

One thing Blood Fury had learned in her life was how to wait. The Woman in Red
went away, and later--there was no way for Blood Fury to tell how much later--men
came. They did things which might have upset a lesser woman, but during her
apprenticeship in the pink flower houses of Lubana and even more during her initiation
into the cult of Kri'ni, she had learned to accept and even enjoy treatment more
extreme. This, she was sure, was merely incidental to whatever the Woman in Red had
in mind for her. Besides, she thought nothing important would happen until the Woman
was present to watch and enjoy the distress Blood Fury was expected to display. When
food and wine were offered, she ate and drank. It might be drugged, but she would
need her strength; starving herself would accomplish nothing. She prayed to Great
Kri'ni to guide and guard her and waited.
Eventually the Woman in Red came back, veiled now, but Blood Fury knew who she
was. With her was a man, and she could hear more in the background.
Without preliminaries, the man examined her, his hands moving impersonally across
her body. "A minor Vessel," he said finally, "but, as you said, unquestionably a
Vessel. She may serve for what we have in mind to do."
"And the price--you will pay us what we are asking?" the Woman said quickly. "No
haggling!"
"No haggling," the man agreed. "My lords have no need to chaffer like merchants
over a sack of beans. Prepare her for shipment at once."
Blood Fury heard this with only a fraction of her attention, for in the depths of
her mind, the voice of Great Kri'ni was speaking to her spirit. *Allow them to take
you into the West, my Daughter* the goddess said. *Though they do not realize it,
they will bring you to serve my purpose, not theirs. Let them be in haste to
introduce the seed of their own destruction into their temples!*
*Thy will be done, Great Kri'ni. But what of Zakar?* Blood Fury asked silently.
*I thought--I had a feeling that we were to come together again.*
     *In the West.*

"You remember White Castle, don't you?" Black Tuesday said. "He just got his
Invitation to the Isle!"
     "Congratulations," Dijanna said. "I remember you--and I'm glad I don't have to
fight you!"
The gladiator smiled modestly. "I'm sure you could beat me," he said. "But tell
me about this adventure you have in mind."
"Well, I don't know a lot yet. Just that Sitha, my manager, wants someone to go
to a place called Tozamatli, somewhere in the far west, and recover something that has
been stolen. The only thing she's told me so far is that it will be extremely
difficult."
"Sounds like just the job for three Lord Protectors!" White Castle said. "That
is, if you don't object to having me along?"
"We'd be glad of your company," Dijanna assured him.

                                      SPY REPORT

Much has changed in SIMTAKKA since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen
adapts to many situations, as do all successful fighters. Some people say I ramble
too much, I don't say anything relevant. I repeat myself. I ramble. Well CORPORATE
ENTITY moved up 0, to 2nd. What's with MIRA SINCLAIR? She actually beat WARRIORS
FIVE's DAMAGERA, and walked away with 19 more points from the fight. Laughs were big
at EASTERN HORDE while they watched MIRA SINCLAIR clobber DAMAGERA. She lost 17
points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. See how the Duelmaster
challenged SAND DANCERS' HALLAM? That sort of initiative is how he got where he is
now. HALLAM was reminded on the sands why WHITE CASTLE is Duelmaster. Advice to
fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting!
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... SIMTAKKA thinks
ARCHANGELS and their 80-73-10 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give up...
The bums at CORPORATE ENTITY couldn't face the challenges from ARCHANGELS! No excuse
for that!
Warriors of SIMTAKKA unite. You have only your games to lose! Is it my
imagination, or are fighters getting younger every day? To die so young, so
gloriously!
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. All work
and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
Olaffighterwork and no play. I don't want to overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen

lost that fight. -- Riya

better advantage after a beating. -- Riyo

Haniel -- You will pay for that! -- Makzalat

Damagera -- Certainly not! That would be dishonorable! -- Riyo

Sinjira Tarsis -- Unnecessary? Well... (graceful shrug) when I see someone who needs
humbling, who am I to hold back? -- Riya

Warriors Five -- Good luck on the move. I know what a pain such things can be. --
Sitha

Ladea -- Oops, that should have been a long SWORD. I thought that stuff Kashmir's
been smoking smelled kinda funny. -- Alembic

Sslinth -- You've improved since our last meeting. Unfortunately for you, I've
improved, also. -- Persuader

Makzalat & Eysis -- How am I supposed to find my favorite if you guys won't let me get

Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.
Cult of the Dragon (339), DM-43

All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
Dragonslayers (636) in Solven (DM 22)
