Barikala:

Barikala was famed for its lighthouse, but actually there was more than one. All
along the coast of the island were towers where beacons could be lit, and five major
lighthouses guiding ships around the island toward the safe entrances to the Urt River
delta. Islanders, and what few gladiators had volunteered, manned these towers with
spyglasses, searching the eastern seas for the first sign of the invading fleet.
There had been three false alarms already, groups of merchant ships traveling together
for safety and making all haste to port.
Shiono, who had the dawn watch at the Storm Point Lighthouse, studied the flecks
of white barely detectable against the brightening sky. They might be gulls, but he
thought it more likely they were sails.... Impossible to count them with any
certainty, but too many to be anything but a fleet. And the only fleet that would be
coming out of the east this year was Inzolas. After one last look, he reached for the
bell-rope that would ring the alarm.

Arvat:

Duke Arrnet stood on wall around his `castle' and stared into the dawn uneasily.
The sea was empty as far as his vision went, but that was no security. For one thing,
there was a light fog over the marshes, and it extended a little way out to sea. He
stamped his feet against the chill of the night just ending and glanced along the
wall. It was the highest point in Arvat and its immediate vicinity, so there were
plenty of lookouts. The gladiator Sisali was the nearest to him. Nice looking wench,
he thought, not a patch on Sugar, of course, but not bad. She didn't look worried
about anything, and Arrnet hoped she had cause for that confidence. He himself was
haunted by the feeling that hostile forces, concealed in some devilish fashion, were
creeping nearer, maybe under the cover of the light fog.
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
With the rising of the sun, the fog melted away from the surface of the Storm
Sea. It revealed twenty ships, alarmingly close to the entrance to Arvat's harbor.
Though each ship had a mast, they weren't trusting to the wind but were coming in
under the propulsion of oars, thirty oars to a vessel manned by warriors in mail
shirts and helms.
Duke Arrnet stared in shock for a long moment. What use his handful of warriors
against six hundred Easterners? Then he drew himself up stiffly. There were many
criticisms that might be leveled against him, but no one had ever said that Arrnet of
Arvat was a coward. "Give the signal to raise the chains across the channel and fix
them in place," he said to Arenamistress Sugar. "Swordsmen to defend the anchor
points as long as they can but not to make martyrs of themselves. Archers here where
they can sweep the waterfront. And everyone remember their lines of retreat and the
rallying points!"

Monuntial:

Standley and Socar had this turn as lookouts, and the two gladiators were perched
at the top of the lighthouse on the point that extended into the Storm Sea beyond
Monuntial. They took turns sweeping the horizon, a mish-mash of water and small
islands, with a spyglass and tried to avoid tripping on the narrow catwalk. As Jimi
of the Long Trippers had pointed out--he had the watch before theirs--if they tripped,
the only choices were to fall into the lantern and get sliced to ribbons by the glass,
or off the edge and be smashed to ground meat by the rocks at the bottom of the tower.
Standley, squinting at the sun and gauging its position with respect to an island
off to the west, said, "Only another hour, and then our shift is over. Who's
relieving us?"
"Don't know," Socar muttered absently, studying the eastern horizon. "Somebody
from Talu Shaya, or else-- Standley!" He grabbed his teammate's arm. "Take the
glass and look over there, just to the left of Turtle Island."
Puzzled, Standley did as requested and froze. "Ships..." he said finally. "Lots
of ships."
"The invasion! You stay here, and I'll take the warning." Before Standley could
reply to that, Socar was half climbing, half falling down the ladder. A race horse,
provided by Lord Dogesal who bred them, waited to carry warning of the invasion, and
Socar tightened the cinch and flung himself into the saddle.
Back on the tower, Standley muttered, "I'd rather have gone myself," the shrugged
and resumed his study of the small flecks that were the sails of the invading fleet.
Or...some fleet, anyway.
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
The ships drew nearer with dreamlike slowness. Standley thought that odd,
considering the strength of the wind, at least, its strength there on the lighthouse
tower. Of course, with all the islands and shoals that turned the western approach to
Monuntial into an obstacle course, maybe it wasn't so unusual as all that.... Slowly,
but without running aground or getting into any of a dozen other mishaps that were
common in those waters. They must have at least one skilled pilot who knew this
approach. Well, it wasn't his business to figure out that; his business was to keep
an eye on the ships and report what he saw.
Starting at one edge of the loosely grouped fleet, he began to examine them ship
by ship, making mental notes of what he saw. There was a group of ships on his right,
meaning closest to shore as they approached, which had white sails and red-and-black
flags. The next group had red sails and blue-and-white banners. Then a motley group
with sails of most any color and no flags that he could see, and another group of red
sails and blue-and-white banners. Did that mean ships from different ports, or
belonging to different fleets? Counting them was impossible; he could only guess at
the numbers: sixty, he thought. That was more than he, for one, had expected.
Watching the slow approach of the invaders, he began to calculate how many
fighting men might be landed from each, and where they would come to shore. Somewhere
here on the point, he decided finally. If they'd meant to come straight into
Monuntial harbor, the would have taken the northern approach to the mouth of the
Duskblood instead of this eastern one. And as for how many men--too many. It seemed
unlikely that there would be as few as ten warriors per ship, but even that would mean
six hundred men!
He wished Socar would get back. With reinforcements.

Near Sarebya, on the coast between Zuwayza and Willaf:

Turlik was a minor officer of the Emir Nirlauk of Sarebya's troops, and to him
had fallen this day's patrol of the coast south of the city. He let his horse plod
along the narrow strip of sand without guidance and brooded darkly on his lot in life.
So long as he remained in Sarebya, there would be no advancement for him. It was far
from the centers of activity where a man might grasp an oportunity, lying on the coast
half way between Zuwayza and the northern tip of the Empire just beyond Willaf. Here
were lacking both the bustle of the capital and the chance of barbarian raids found in
the north. And while Sarebya might fairly be called a city, it was a small one. The
harbor was so inferior that no foreign trade came to it.
To be sure, there might be something in this invasion story, but Emir Nirlauk
said it was nonsense, and the Emir was, after all, the governor. He would know,
wouldn't he? Turlik glanced seaward dutifully as his horse rounded another of the
succession of small points that formed this stretch of the coast. Sandy coves and
wooded points, for miles, nobody to talk to, nobody to-- Surely there were rather a
lot of sails out there? Not even the entire fishing fleet of Sarebya would-- By
Kjarran's steel claws!
He wrenched his horse's head around and set the beast galloping back toward the
city.

Sarebya:

"It's the invasion fleet, I tell you," Turlik said yet again. "More sails than I
could count, with the wind behind them, and headed for the coast just south of here."
"The invaders are not coming here," Cadiz Virkaj snapped. He was the commander
of the Emir of Sarebya's household troops. "If there are any invaders, which is
questionable. And I'll thank you not to go spreading this wild tale of yours and
causing a panic."
     "But, Cadiz, I saw them!"
"Fishing boats," the cadiz said dismissingly. Anything further he might have
said was interrupted by the frantic clamor of the alarm bell in the tower overhead.
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
Cadiz Virkaj assembled his men with commendable speed, posting them at the points
where the harbor defenses could best benefit from their presence. Even the presence
of distracted citizens clogging the streets and shouting to know what the danger was
did not hamper this maneuver, because it was one which had been practiced many times.
Fixed-base catapults which had long since had their aim targeted on the harbor
entrance were uncovered and readied to fire. Messengers were dispatched to all
neighboring towns with word of the first sighting of the enemy fleet.
And then they waited, through a long afternoon when the scattered clouds of the
morning gathered overhead and began fitfully to rain. Occasionally a far-sighted
soldier on one of the heights would glimpse sails behind the curtain of rain, but none
came near enough to fire even the long-range ballistae at.
"They've pulled off to the south," Cadiz Virkaj muttered. He had taken up a
commanding position on the top of the tower which formed the center of the harbor
defense, as was his right and duty. Sarebya, at the mouth of the modest Mirsil River,
was cupped in gentle hills which restricted his view of the coastline to the north and
south, but his position gave him a complete picture of the state of the harbor. "I
knew they didn't mean to land here. They've gone after Zuwayza--"
"Could their navigators be so incompetent?" Turlik asked.
Virkaj shrugged, as though to say that he wasn't answerable for the quality of
Serevadan navigators. He glanced around, then stiffened as black smoke billowed up
behind the hills to the south. "They've bypassed the city!" he gasped. "They're on
the shore to the south!" He turned and plunged down the stairs with reckless haste,
dragging Turlik after him. "Take the Red Lion Company and ride south," he commanded
the younger man. "If they've landed in force, you won't be able to stop them, but
slow them down, kill as many as you can, and hold them to the beach. I must tell the
Emir."

On the coast near Ebansar, halfway between Malcorn and Zukal:

The ships had nearly reached the shore before the farmer, Jaksho, noticed them.
Although there were occasional raiding ships along this coast, danger was much more
likely to come from inland, and his wary attention had been all for the forest beyond
the road.
"Serimna!" he exclaimed. "Hey, Whitebraid!" He pitched a pebble at his
companion, a former gladiator now busily felling a sapling that had invaded the field.
The gladiator looked up and followed Jaksho's pointing finger. "Serimna save
us!" Whitebraid said. "Jak, take the horse and ride like hell for the city--"
     "Which city?"
"Any one, dammit. This is the invasion, and it looks like the main landing! You
have to take a warning--"
     "What invasion?"
"Jak, trust me, there's an invasion, and this is it. Go, man!"

A little farther up the coast:

The farmer, Jaksho, steered his sweating horse up the path to the construction
site on the forested bluff. He hadn't known anything was being built here, but the
armed men in the drab colors of Malcorn Regulars were a welcome sight. It looked like
they were making a tower, but the stone walls were only about fifteen feet high so
far. It stood right at the fork where the Malcorn road parted from the less-traveled
Coast Road that led to Salirjek.
The soldiers, both workmen and guards, looked up as he approached. "Invaders!"
he shouted. "Ships, a lot of ships! About six and a quarter miles south!" He had a
good notion of the distance because he'd stopped here often enough on his way to
market. There was an old Van well here, and the water was still sweet. It looked
like they were enclosing the well inside an extension of the wall.
One of the soldiers (there were no markings of rank on their uniforms) turned to
another and said, "Bitry, mount up and carry this news to Malcorn. Tell him the Fort
Vanwell contingent is moving south to scout the enemy. We'll leave a signalman here."
     "Aye, sir."
"Leeman, get up in a tree and signal Fort Liberty. Let's see if they've spotted
anything."

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Hello, Sports Fans, this is Biff Bunkum with the NEWS!
Lungers remain the most numerous style here in Free Blades today, and they're
doing quite well, with 58% wins over ten cycles and a rousing 23-13 today. Tremor of
Zukal, managed by, er, possibly the Sandman? yes, the Sandman, is the top-ranked
lunger here today.
Slashers come next in numbers, but they have nothing else to boast about. Only
44% wins over ten cycles! And today's 12-14 won't help a bit. Ramesses II of Zukal,
managed by Dark One, is the leading slicer and dicer.
Strikers are next, and what's striking about them is that they're doing poorly.
Only 47% wins over ten cycles--better than the slashers, I admit--and 6-11 today.
Punk. Llew Llaw of Murska, managed by Jorja, is the best of this sorry lot.
Parry-lungers are looking good, with 66% wins over ten cycles and a rousing 9-5
today. That's the best showing on the sands today for any style. Olduvai George of
Daiyla Kiv, managed by Mad Max, is the high-ranked warrior of this style.
Bashers, the sorry lot--not so sorry today. Sure, they've only got 42% wins over
ten cycles, but that's not the worst record of any style here! And today's 7-4 is
quite respectable. Octavius of Chimlevtal, managed by Caesar, is leading this hopeful
pack today.
Walls of steel are looking rusty, with 47% wins over ten cycles and an
embarrassing 3-8 on the sands today. Bad Karma of Vithicar, who may have jinxed the
whole style, is the stylemaster, and his manager is, once again, the Sandman.
Aimed blows can usually be counted on for a good record, but we've got too many
of them here today. Okay, 54% wins in ten cycles isn't bad, but 3-5 today is punk.
Carnivorous Sloth of Rocanis, managed by one of those strong silent types, is the
high-ranked aimer.
Parry-strikers are just plain mediocre at 46% wins over ten cycles and 3-3 today.
Shaved Mammoth of Dullens, managed by Dark One, is the stylemaster, and by his
personal record, quite a master indeed.
Total parries can gladden the hearts of all by showing the worst long-term record
in Free Blades today: only 38% wins in ten cycles. But today's 3-2 may indicate
improvement to come. Golem of Murska, managed by Aragorn, I believe, is the leader of
this lot.
Our lone parry-ripostes is suffering from that bane of the one-warrior style, a
bad day. Although showing the best long-term record at 67% wins in nine fights,
Nipple of Sentern lost today, which gives him/her/it the worst standing of styles on
the sands today. Father is the manager of this ambiguous one.
Only four styles are represented in the Top Eleven Warriors today, and six of
them are lungers! Is this Little Darkholm? Can't we get some more variety at the
top? How many of these warriors will be carried off by the Split? In any case,
missing are: bashers, strikers, walls of steel, aimed blows, parry-ripostes, and total
parries.
The overall popularity leader is ANGEL of Sentern. The most popular warrior this
turn was CARNIVOROUS SLOTH of Rocanis. The least popular fighter this week was SMALL
CAT of Dullens.
The Karnhorn Empire sent the most warriors onto the sands today, thirty-six of
them going 21-15. Very respectable. Jurine and Kurukar are tied for the largest
number of active warriors here, but Kurukar is ahead in record. The top-ranked
Karnhorn active here today is Lethal Injection of Aljafir, managed by Floyd. The
Trading Cities are the next in line, with twenty-three warriors going 12-11-1. Zukal
is both the most active and the most successful, and fittingly enough, the stylemaster
is Tremor of Zukal, managed by the Sandman. The Storm Coast cities also sent out
twenty-three warriors but did less well at 9-14. Probably distracted by the Invasion.
Arvat was the most active, Niatoli the most successful. Emma Peel of Niatoli, managed
by Tryad, I believe, is the top warrior from the Coast. The Charter Cities, with
eighteen active warriors, went 8-10. Dullens sent the most warriors but Lapur has the
best record. The top-ranked Charter Cities warrior is Shaved Mammoth of Dullens,
managed by Dark One. Sentern's seventeen active warriors went 11-6, led by Dream Date
Log, manager Father. The Northern Independents (mostly slow arenas) were represented
only by Vithicar's ten warriors going 3-7. Bad Karma, managed by the Sandman, led
them. Four Adantri fought today, going 3-1. Daiyla Kiv was both most productive and
most successful, with Olduvai George of that city, managed by Dark One, as the leader
of the group. Two Andorians fought, going 1-1 and leaving neither city with an edge
in numbers. Snow Yellow of Aradi, managed by Mad Max, is the top-ranked Andorian
here. Two Delarquans, both from Tricorus, fought and went 1-1. Skip 3, managed by
Father, is the high-ranked Delarquan today. Three standbys fought and lost.
The one death this cycle resulted when Blackrain of Zukal killed Madbull of
Dullens.
The Mothership II was Most Avoided, and Roman Heroes was Most Avoiding. Jack was
Most Challenged.

                               PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE

Apollo Maximillious -- Hello, old sparring partner! It's been a while. I must send a
challenge your way, assuming I can get one through the hail of downchallenges. --
Captain K., manager of Suddenly Santa!

It is, like, not hailing so bad today.

Antisocial -- What a wonderful fight! I must give you something nice in your stocking
this year. Perhaps a backup weapon? -- Pere Noel

Jorja -- Yeah with me here, the number of managers writing personal ads every turn has
doubled. -- Captain K.

Deer Island Gate -- What if I don't want to go to Deer Island? -- Llew Llaw

Ecnalav -- My thanks for that rating. It should be most useful, sir. -- Cat

Rolf -- I believe I need to do a little fine tuning, for which that rating should be
most useful. Thank you. -- Moonjumper

Blacker -- I deckered you. -- Raven Eyes

Julius -- I'll duress you, you damned dwarf! -- Kaffwin

Blackrain -- I think I've heard about you.... Didn't you take a lady named Sky to
dinner and dancing once? -- Lanny
P.S. Just your bad luck on that match. You started well, but I finished better.

Claudius -- I didn't expect you to go down so fast! -- Redfox

Lanny -- I must admit, it did feel good winning my first fight in this arena. It's a
shame it was against someone as polite as yourself. -- Domonisk

Nipple -- I'm not the first to challenge you only to be smacked around, am I? --
Bloodshot, feeling like a sucker (no pun intended)

     Nope.

Fern -- Well met, lady. -- Domonisk

Kcin -- We are eager to fight you. We have not forgotten Hypaysia. -- Friday & Pippen

Rolf -- Let's go at it again. Last time was interesting. -- Golem

Pendragon -- That was close. Next time will be different. -- Pippen

Danish -- Nice downchallenge. -- Golem

Wild Turkey -- You showed me a thing or two. Ask your manager if he has an e-mail
address for me. -- Friday

All -- Talon Volksie has finally entered the 90's on the verge of the millenium. I
have e-mail. You may email me at TalonVolksie@aol.com. -- Talon V.

Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.
Cult of the Dragon (339), DM-43

All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
Dragonslayers (636) in Solven (DM 22)

16 October 1999
To anyone starting a new team -- No good sales pitch or gimmicks (yet). If you're
adding a team, please put it in Jurine, DM-61. We only have one unchartered team and
eight teams total. So why come to Jurine? Simply put; WE ARE BEGGING YOU!!! --
Wardancer, mgr. War Party
