WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
Scowling, Vannes leaned against the cold trunk of the pine tree that hid him from
the moonlight. Not right, not right, he thought. Of course, Lex was always right,
but treating those poor little Ventan that way, it wasn't right. They needed medical
attention, they needed to have those acid burns washed with clean water, they needed
to be treated for shock and pain. Naturally, Lex was right and the most important
thing was to get control of that Chaos Gate, but would it be so bad to behave with a
little humanity along the way? They were Lord Protectors, after all! They were
expected to uphold--well, of course now they were loyal to Lex, not Greywand, but
still, he had really liked being a Lord Protector. There was honor in it. Of course
there was honor in serving the great Lex Luthor, too, but....
He heard a soft thud and a clatter as another Ventan collapsed on the machine.
With a growling mutter and a shake of his head, Vannes left his guard post and walked
back to the Gate.
The green glow from the ornate stone arch seemed bright to his moonlight-adapted
eyes, but it didn't illuminate as much as it should, and its shifting shadows created
the appearance of things moving everywhere. Glimpsing something big to the right, he
glanced that way, and bumped into a person who had been ahead and to his left. The
other person fell, and when his foot encountered an irregularity in the forest floor,
Vannes, already a little off balance, also fell. Hearing an elven curse, he surmised
that he'd fallen on top of Ivendor, that elf who'd come along with the renegade
redhead, Aurora.
Suddenly people were running and shouting all around him. He started to get up,
and something hit him on the back of the head.
Messycat lay on his travois in the black shadow of a big pine, the same tree that
Kali had kept watch in, before Aurora converted her. His mind ranged over a variety
of subjects, things that had once confused him but were now clear. His broken leg
hurt fiercely, but on the whole he was having a good night. "Aha!" he said softly,
remembering something that had long puzzled him. "So THAT'S what people mean by 'the
birds and the bees'!" He gazed up at the stars through the branches. Someone had
once told him that they were great burning lanterns attached to the canopy of the
night. Not likely, he thought. Their hot vapors would set the canopy on fire. If,
indeed, there was a canopy, which seemed rather improbable actually.... His mind
wandered. He remembered a joke he'd once heard, got it, and laughed.
Soft sounds on the meadow path alerted him and he raised himself slightly on his
elbows. "Hey! Are you the Ventan?"
A group of slight forms looked out from the shelter of the ferns, which for them
were nearly head-high. They wore black clothes and their faces and hair were pale.
One of them spoke to him, in an old, dry voice.
"I don't understand your language," he said. It disappointed him that there were
still things he couldn't understand.
The old Ventannish woman moved her hands and muttered something in a singsong
tone, and then said, "Is this better?"
"A language spell!" Messycat said, delighted. "How wonderful! Thank you!"
"You're welcome," said the old woman. "Where are your friends?"
"They've gone ahead--but you should stay there! The boundary of influence for
Lex's device is very close to you. If you cross it, you'll be sucked in. You can
tell when my friends have switched off the machine, because I'll...." A sudden
realization struck him. His head dropped. "I'll stop making sense. Could you do
another spell for me?"
"What sort of spell?" asked the old woman.
"Anything. Your magical powers are amazing. I just want to see more."
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Hey, there, friends and fans, Biff couldn't make it, but he left me his notes, so
let's see what we can do with it. I figure on talking a lot, because it's damned cold
here, and I'm hoping the hot air will warm things up.
The first thing on the list is slashers, which is the way it should be. This is
the "slasher arena" just like Darkholm's the "lunger arena," am I right? Of course
I'm right! Who'd know better than me? Twenty-two slashers fought today, which is
twice as many as the next nearest style. They're doing pretty fair, too, with 55%
wins over ten cycles and 12-10 today. Tentacles of Dal Shang, that guy with twenty
hands and each one holding a sword, is the top slicer-and-dicer, and his manager is
Coeur.
Lungers are next, but there's only eleven of them, which is a relief. They run
through their fights so fast, I don't have time to realize the fight's on before it's
over. Not that I like long fights, but you know what I mean. Only 44% wins over ten
cycles, too, which is punk. But maybe today's 6-5 means they're getting it back
together. Or maybe it was just the luck of the draw. That's right, most of the
fights were random matches, but I'll get into that later. Jeanne of Simtakka, a cute
kid whose mother doesn't know she's doing this kind of stuff, is the top lunger, and
her manager is The Boss.
Total parries are next, nine of 'em, tied with strikers that way. They're doing
pretty good, too, with 59% wins over ten cycles and 6-3 today. Bummer, isn't it? I
go to the fights, I like to see something more than a couple of guys in a staring
match. Oh, well, at least I get paid for it. Early to Wise of Dal Shang, the guy
with all the good advice, is high-ranked total parry today, and his manager is Coeur,
once again.
We may have as many strikers as total parries, but they're doing worse, lots
worse. Only 46% wins over ten cycles, and a totally lousy 2-7 today. Stonebeard of
Simtakka--lots of good warriors come out of Simtakka--is the top-ranked striker, and
his manager is Lord Falca Erindane. How come we don't get any personals for Erindane
any more? Hey, guy, we miss you.
Walls of steel...what can I say about them? As an architectural element, they
lack warmth, and as warriors, they aren't doing to badly. We've got eight, and they
stand at 52% wins over ten cycles and 5-3 today. Not so bad as it might be. Darius
of Miroi T'Chi-Chang, a city renowned for its antique elegance, is the leading warrior
of this style, and his manager is Jester. Most of the graduates of the Old Capital go
to Crysalis, so we must be glad to have Darius among us.
Parry-strikers. You know, I can't think of a thing to say about them. We've got
five (tied with the bashers there), and they're only doing so-so: 48% wins over ten
cycles and 3-2 today. Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but not by
much. The tops in this field is Robert Lee of Dal Shang--Dal Shang is our second-most
productive arena--managed by The Boss.
And five bashers to balance the five p-strikers. These guys should be in Home
Guard, except that there are a lot of lungers there these days. Bashers, as a style,
have the worst ten-cycle record of any style, a measly 31% wins, and today's 1-4 isn't
going to help that a bit. Phetmolge, that jolly old elf, is the high-ranked basher;
he's from Sibikhas and his manager is the She-Puppy.
Parry-lungers--we only have three of them, and they should hang their heads in
shame. Only 41% wins over ten cycles, and the worst current showing of any style: 0-
3! So much for trying to combine the subtlety of a parry with the viciousness of the
lunge, eh? Altair of Jade Mountain, managed by Coeur, stands at the top of this sorry
style today.
We have two each of the masters of subtlety. Two parry-ripostes, and they have
the best record, any way you care to slice it, of the ten styles: 80% wins over ten
cycles and 2-0 today. Aiken Drum, the wonder kid, well, not a kid any longer, from
Dal Shang is the top p-ripper, and his manager is Tiriena.
And the aimed blows, also two in number, have the second best long-term record at
64% but went 1-1 today. Karldon, Mr. Accuracy in person, comes to us from Simtakka to
lead this style, and his manager, as always, is Lord Falca Erindane.
Seven styles are represented in the Top Eleven Warriors today, the same mix as
last time. Bashers (naturally), parry-lungers, and aimed blows are missing from the
upper ranks.
The overall popularity leader is AIKEN DRUM of Dal Shang. The most popular
warrior this turn was FLASH of Daiyla Kiv. It's the day of the fossils. The least
popular fighter this week was KALAN of Daiyla Kiv, which is how we initiate new
graduates.
Seventy Adantri stepped out onto the sands today, going 36-34. The largest
number came from Simtakka, with the second largest from Dal Shang. The best showing
was turned in by Miroi T'Chi-Chang at 1-0, with Simtakka second best at 11-5. The
top-ranked Adantri warrior, just barely was Tentacles of Dal Shang, managed, as stated
above, by Coeur. Six Delarquans fought today, going 2-4, with the most warriors and
the best record coming from Sibikhas. Black Dahlia of that city, managed by Li Dan,
is the top-ranked Delarquan here today. I don't think any standbys fought here today.
Bladesmen was, or were, most avoided and Jailbait most avoiding. Khirza was most
challenged.
There were thirty-eight fights, including a lousy nine challenge matches. The
title match was a random fight, for pete's sake! Can't you do better than that?

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Devereaux -- You sweet thing! -- Dahlia
P.S. If you want to come lend a hand down in wherever it is I am, you could have
my...company. (wink)
P.P.S. Jupiter's just a friend.
Stonebeard -- You are formidable. Well done. -- Nelinaria
Kalan -- Oh, Mantor, I didn't mean to hit you on the jaw. I don't know how that
happened, because I was aiming for your leg! -- Deanjli
Altair -- A battle of the fossils. (sigh) -- Dahlia
Swift -- But not swift enough. -- Miha
Flash -- You sneaky little Mirani! -- Kitala
John Hood -- Well, it was about TIME I won something. Thanks. -- Alina
Inigo Montoya -- An unfortunate match for you. May you fare better in the future. --
Rebina
Burmese -- I think I'll have a cat-skin for my bed... -- Khora
Chesser -- I won't forget that, you sneaky little dwarf. -- Rina
Trevor Placker -- (curses too numerous to list, and also too boring to chronicle, but
I think he doesn't like you) -- Malno
Khirza -- Thanks for everything. -- Blades
Celuan -- Next time, whatever you are. -- Kali
Kali -- That was a good fight. You're welcome to a rematch whenever you want.
Considering the difference in our experience, I'm just sorry I couldn't teach you
anything. -- Celuan
Devereaux -- Ouch, that hurt so much you got me to admit my secret. Please, tell no
one. -- Phetmolge
P.S. And, I am NOT loyal to the Mordanti Alliance. I may be from the Sibikhas area
originally, but I am loyal to the Empire of Lirith Kai.
Blades -- Never try you again? Never try you again? YOU challenged ME! And I'll be
most grateful if YOU never try ME again. -- Khirza
Shanghai Sam -- Nice going. With the style match and the rankings against you, you
fought superbly. -- Nightingale
Mad Doc Williams -- Woo woo! Come join the party! I fought a four-minute fight and I
WON! Thank you so much! Whooooooo! -- Colredes
P.S. Oh, in response to your curiosity about what you're really made of: Looked like
the usual blood and guts to me, honey.
Romal -- I don't know how you could keep fighting with that horrible forehead wound,
and all the blood and...other stuff dripping into your eyes. But then, I suppose your
style doesn't make too many demands on the brain anyhow. Well done. -- Nightfall
Bengal -- Like my desperation strategy? -- Vasheel
Jack the Ripper -- Don't you try ripping me! I'm not your type. -- Messycat
Braxton Bragg -- You must get plenty of practice fighting, what with being a general
and all. Or do you have to sit at a desk all day? -- Jupiter
Al Capone -- Just so you know, I don't mind that you don't pay taxes, but I do mind
that you go around killing people unnecessarily. -- Aiken Drum

All -- Talon Volksie has finally entered the 90's on the verge of the millenium. I
have e-mail. You may email me at TalonVolksie@aol.com. -- Talon V.
Everyone now knows that DM-33 is one of the "Fiercest & Best Free Blades Arena"
around. The Hammer and others have done wonderful things for that arena. With 50 or
so teams, DM-33 is fun, challenging and a joy to play in. However, I am not here to
talk about DM-33. I want to talk to you about DM-43, Veastian.
DM-43 is not a large arena, we have only 8 teams here right now. It is small,
and not the greatest arena around...yet. We need YOU to help make this a great
arena. Since it's so small, this is your chance to get in on the ground floor and
become a cornerstone of this arena. Not many have this chance. DM-33 is great, but
it is crowded. Here in DM-43 you will not be one of the many, you will be one of the
best. For all of you Noblish Island managers, this is your chance to transfer your
team to an arena where you will have an immediate impact on the game. This is an
arena where you can continue to hone your skills and be a contender for the
Duelmastership. Veteran managers...do you want to make Duelmasters the best it can
be? Help newbies and make an arena of your own?
This is a wonderful chance for everyone. For the newer players to make a
serious impact on an arena and veteran players to be a "founder" of an arena.
Managers like Don John, Mutt Lange, The Rake and myself want you to help make DM-43
the best arena out there. We don't want just "anyone" to come here, we want managers
who want to play hard and have fun. If that is you, then come to DM-43, Veastian.
If anyone has any questions at all, please diplo me and I will reply as soon as
possible. Now is your chance, now is the time. DM-43. -- Apollo Maximillious, mgr.
Cult of the Dragon (339), DM-43
All -- By Seefe's name, am I tired of looking at such team names as Inyo Eye and
Eggnog Warriors. Please, in the name of all that is decent on the face of Ghea, give
your teams and fighters APPROPRIATE names!! I know it can be challenging and
demanding to make up TRULY GOOD names like Boneshredders and Aerie Fire, but please,
don't call your guys something that causes me to dirge in disgust!! It really hurts
your (and my) gaming experience when my warriors have to stand against someone named
"Underwear Gnomes". After all, I can come up with ten names like Bust-a-Plumber and
Chococroc in a single minute, but why don't I do it? -- Shadowfire, mgr. of
Dragonslayers (636) in Solven (DM 22)
16 October 1999
To anyone starting a new team -- No good sales pitch or gimmicks (yet). If you're
adding a team, please put it in Jurine, DM-61. We only have one unchartered team and
eight teams total. So why come to Jurine? Simply put; WE ARE BEGGING YOU!!! --
Wardancer, mgr. War Party
