THE MAIL-IN GRAND TOURNAMENT XXVII

ARENAMASTER'S NOTES: 18 April 1999

This is the newsletter for the twenty-seventh Mail-In Grand Tournament. All regular Duelmasters arena newsletters will include a listing of the tournament participants from that arena--all the warriors that fought will have their tournament win-loss record posted for all to see. The class divisions for Grand Tournament XXVII were as follows:

A grand total of 2992 warriors participated in Grand Tournament XXVII. This was a huge amount of strategy input, and every effort was made to ensure the accuracy of the strategies. Unfortunately, we cannot correct or investigate any possible turn input errors, nor can we rerun fights, give credit, or change learns due to possible errors.

Thanks to all of you for participating in this Grand Tournament. Your warrior's tournament record will not count toward his record in regular arena play. The warrior with the best overall record in each class is declared "The Tournament Champion," and may fight for free in regular arena play. In addition, the manager of each Tournament Champion for each regular tournament is awarded the Tournament Prize: the ability to switch two pairs of attributes on a new warrior, when he first joins your team (before receiving his first overview). You may either switch both pairs on the same warrior, or one pair on each of two warriors.

Warriors who were uneliminated at the end of the 10th round of the regular tournaments have earned "Tournament Victor" status, which will enable them to make one challenge per turn with increased priority by writing "TV" next to that challenge. "Tournament Victor" and "Tournament Champion" status are great honors, and their benefits will last until our next Mail-In tournament, or until six months have passed. All warriors who earned Tournament Champion or Tournament Victor status from Mail-in XXVI no longer have this status. All Victors and Champions will also receive a Certificate of Achievement.

Congratulations to the winners, and condolences to the dead. -- The Gladiatorial Commission

TOURNAMENT SPY REPORT

Well. Here I am. Doing a BADD tournament spy report. But I'm not a spy, so I'm going to just call it a tournament report. I figure that since I'm doing this, I can call it what I want. Debby was supposed to be the one writing this, but she's gone off to start her tanning and I wasn't fast enough out the back door. Ah well, such is life. This will be the first time in ages we actually have a tournament report that includes alliance stuff, hopefully it will be correct alliance stuff. If not, of course, be sure to let us know.

Okay, I've got a nice tall glass of something cold and there's a band playing some good music in the next room (it's TISM, if you're interested), so I guess I'm set.

Gateway. There was rather an upset in Gateway this time around. The odds-on favorite, Vengeance, didn't make it! I understand she was caught in some odd chaos effect on the way to the tourney grounds and didn't arrive until several days after everyone had packed up and gone home. Round seventeen of this tournament had Tagan of Golden Hoste matched up against Teetotaler of Miscellaneous II. Tagan took his own sweet time in winning the fight, but win he did. Congratulations to Tagan on a fine victory.

Primus. Rather an exciting finish here, I must say. Rounds eighteen, nineteen, and twenty had Spearman of Nomads matched up against Grim Reaver of The Red Reavers. Spearman went into round eighteen with a record of 17-0-0 while Grim was sitting at 15-2-0. Grim then proceeded to beat Spearman twice in a row, putting them on even footing. In that final round though, Spearman pulled out all the stops and took the title. I know I was on the edge of my seat for those. Well done, both of you!

Eligibles. The Eligibles were relatively quick, finishing off in a mere thirteen rounds. The final fight was between #Party Dog of Party Time and Drizzt Do'Urden of Knights of Old 2. I don't know if it was the cool hash mark in his name, or if it was something else entirely, but the Dog came through with flying colours. Oh wait, if dogs can only see in black and white, I guess the colours don't matter, do they? Anyhow, #Party Dog is top dog of the Eligibles.

ADM. The undefeated Moonshine Bear of Care Less Bears and Miller Knight of Thirsty Thugs went head to head in the eleventh and final round of this tourney. Pretty amusing to watch two drunken warriors out on the sands. It didn't last too long though.... I guess since Miller has a lower alcohol content, the Knight thumped the Bear but good. It is to be hoped that Moony couldn't Care Less, since that certainly looked to me like it hurt!

Freshmen. Again, there were two undefeated warriors to go into round eleven. Knuckles of Black Magic matched against the deceptively named Sucks More of Corsica. Hmmm...I suppose it could be something like, "Sucks More protein drinks at the gym" or something. At any rate, SM slammed the ruler down on Knuckles.

Champions. There were three undefeated dudes on round ten, so the Champions got to go to twelve rounds. Ah, the final fight had another dog, it certainly was the day of the dog! Devil Dog of Mongrel Horde fought Proriarity of Scragitarious for a quick finish, advantage to the Mongrel. I hope you get a nice big soup bone for that victory!

Adepts. The Adepts didn't have any undefeated warriors, but there were a whole mess of 9-1s to carry the tourney out to round thirteen. Blatherdung of Grandmaster Academy was beaten out by Lum of Uresei Yatsura in that final, unlucky round. Well, unlucky for Blatherdung, at any rate. I'll bet he has to go on bread and water rations for a while for that loss....

Initiates. These guys don't fool around, they ended on round ten with one, and only one, undefeated warrior. Pepe Le Funk of The Fun Bunch won his final fight versus Bob Zemuda of The Wanderers. Poor Bob was denied even a TV by that unfortunate loss. I guess that means he'll keep on Wandering while Pepe has Fun, eh?

Apprentices. Round eleven matched Can-Am of Ka-Pow! against Falisha Rrostarr of House Rrostarr in a quick and brutal battle. It looks like there may be something to this whole Lloth thing after all, since it brought Falisha through the tourney both unscathed and undefeated.

Novices. The Novices took their cue from the Initiates and only went ten rounds. Sputterbuzz of Tackle Box was the lucky (or skillful, depending on who you ask) undefeated champion of the class. He (I think, it's hard to tell with armour sometimes) gave a second loss to Simeon of Superior Forces in the final fight.

Rookies. The Rookies also took no more than their scheduled ten rounds. The final fight between Star Child of Blackened Pride and Two Face of Arkham Asylum left Star Child the Star of the show. Heh, I slay me! Anyhow, it was actually a rather close fight, there were any number of times where it looked like old Two Face was going to best the Star. But after eight minutes, the kid came out on top and denied Two Face a TV. Guess it's back to prison, eh Twoie?

BADD Dudes. Just a quick rundown here, since all the final fights were against Commission warriors. Victors were: Bad Dog of Mongrel Horde, Eligibles; Horny of The Other 7 Dwarfs, ADM; Adolph Andressen of Grandmasters, Freshmen; Cime of Sanctuary, Champions; no one won the Adepts, since Wrath lost the final fight against the Embezzling Scribe (for shame!); Witchblade of Emerald Myst, Initiates; Mackinaw of Stream Bottom Blues, Apprentices; Staple Gun of I Trained Them, Novices; and Doc Steele of Legends of Ego, Rookies.

So, how did it go for you misclassified dudes? Betcha had a shock when they sent you off to fight in the correct tourney rather than letting you slip through.... We hired artists to do pictures of all of you so the guards would know who to turn back. Pretty good, eh?

What's next? Ah, charts for the number crunchers.
